Can I have a full list of package versions and compile flags? When I'm telling people what I run, I say I run Gentoo. Used to say Debian, Arch. I don't mention the kernel or the userland. This semantics game is so gay.

the Linux Desktop still functions much like a server
Almost as if Unix wasn't built to be a desktop workstation OS from the beginning and the workstation desktop GUI part only got slapped on later...Linux is not a casual desktop experience like Windows and MacOS are, and in many regards that's a good thing

You react as if that's a revelation or a bad thing. Most people running desktop Linux do so because they want a more developer-centric experience. It is a highly customizable platform to be built out to your own needs. There are some distros more newbie friendly, like Mint, but at its core Linux is still aimed at enthusiasts and technical professionals. It is precisely because it isn't coupled to a desktop gui that it serves that market.Almost as if Unix wasn't built to be a desktop workstation OS from the beginning and the workstation desktop GUI part only got slapped on later...![]()
Lies, Richard Matthew Stallman is a much more inventive songwriter than this.Well, I wrote this song for the Linux youth
Not everyone is enthralled with games.>zero game support
why do people use linux exactly?
usually they shouldn't touch each other, the problem is windows likes to go full retard over it's system drive. you can add linux to the windows boot loader to show up, but prepare to add it again after an update.I dual boot Arch and Windows on two PCs (separate drives) and both are borked. If I want to use Arch it’s all fine, if I want to use Windows Grub sez no and I have to do it from the BIOS. They used to work. Both have win on SSD and Arch on nvme.
highly doubt that, because that's an area I don't see valve focus on. if there will be a new steamos, I expect it more to be like turning your PC into a more open console with big picture (and the community adding smaller stuff to it), not necessary full blown desktop which they'd then have to support. for triple monitors the underlying distro (I think they're using arch these days) would be able to provide that. so you wouldn't really have to wait, you could use it right now.Ultimately, if SteamOS is ever released, and works decently on desktop, I might change and make that my permanent home. Just want to find out if it will work well with triple monitor setup.
Check out my previous post, Bazzite is the OS you are looking for.I'm on EndeavourOS atm. I started with Linux Mint, and still have it running on an old 2017 laptop, use it mostly when I travel to places for short periods of time and I wanna game on older stuff.
My main PC (EndeavourOS) is where I game, almost everything is single player offline games. I went from Linux Mint -> Ubuntu -> Fedora -> Manjaro -> Arch -> Endeavour . It is great that most controllers and peripherals work with Linux, I got Honeycomb rudder and switches for flight sim and they work out of the box on Linux.
I have an older PC that I left Windows 10 installed as I use it for my racing sim setup. The gear I have, Fanatec, does work on Linux, but not out of the box, but if I ever need to update firmware, can only do it through windows.
Ultimately, if SteamOS is ever released, and works decently on desktop, I might change and make that my permanent home. Just want to find out if it will work well with triple monitor setup.
Call me curious - as a self proclaimed "paranoid type", what would you consider a secure system? Not everyone is enthralled with games.
Us paranoid types just can't get behind all the M$ corporate spyware/malware packed into Windows 10, 11, and soon enough....Win 12! Not that Linux ain't at least trying to do the same, but it's soooo far behind Billie Gates minions it will take years, if not decades, to catch up! After all, Billie was THE purveyor of Palladium, NGSCB, Longhorn, etc., back in the day, hence M$ has a huge head start.
Probably anything with Linux, completely ignoring the existence of IME and all the implications of having an entire instance of Minix you have no access to or control over running at all times way beyond your OS. I sincerely doubt he's one of those true schizos that sources ancient pre-IME ThinkPads to LibreBoot for 100% clean hardware. Dude strikes me as a /g/ schizo and those are the epitome of Dunning-Kruger retardation.Call me curious - as a self proclaimed "paranoid type", what would you consider a secure system?
The only secure system is unplugged, disassembled, shredded, encased in concrete and shot into the sun.Call me curious - as a self proclaimed "paranoid type", what would you consider a secure system?
>sheSo I was casually reading some Linux drama on Libre News, and I came across this article that piqued my interest. Supposedly someone named "Asahi Lina" released all of her Asahi Linux code as CC0 after a fight with a developer. But the story doesn't end there: I did a bit of digging and found that the day this meltdown happened was on April 16th, the day after the 4chan hack.
It just so happens that Lina had a similar handle to one of the jannies from the leaks, so while she wasn't a janny, there was probably some collateral damage. Shit gets even weirder when you go to the Asahi thread where there's evidence that Lina and the former lead are the same person. I'm not sure what to take away from this other than that the naming & shaming actually got to him and caused another spergout.
