The Linux Thread - The Autist's OS of Choice

Quite frankly I think headless servers have a place in Linux discussions because most people who use desktop Linux probably interact with servers as well. I don't think using Linux exclusively as a desktop is a logical choice for normalfags, because the Linux Desktop still functions much like a server. It is one of its selling points, and also one of the reasons it's for enthusiasts.

Linux is not a casual desktop experience like Windows and MacOS are, and in many regards that's a good thing. It would not be as flexible if it was aimed at standard consumers, and wouldn't serve its actual function.

When I'm telling people what I run, I say I run Gentoo. Used to say Debian, Arch. I don't mention the kernel or the userland. This semantics game is so gay.

I'm always a little curious about Arch

but Linux Mint just works so I have zero incentive to replace it.

Can I have a full list of package versions and compile flags?

Almost as if Unix wasn't built to be a desktop workstation OS from the beginning and the workstation desktop GUI part only got slapped on later...

came to post that.

Linux specifically, was made with the intention of being a desktop/workstation operating system. It just ended up taking off heavily in the server space. It had a lot of people in different areas adopt, and contribute to it. So it ended up becoming more useful in areas that it was used. Servers, supercomputers, then it turned out some of the things used in supercomputers were also useful for running on phones, for embedded systems, and desktop systems with multiple cores.

Compare running a linux desktop, and running what people would say are closer to true unix like systems on the desktop (openbsd, freebsd, whatever other bsd), and yeah. Unix sucks for the desktop. It doesn't have a lot of the nice things you get from linux on a desktop system. Linux actually works well. Then things like wayland are moving linux away from the xorg server way of doing a gui, even though people that really like xorg don't like that idea. It makes sense to move away from it for desktop users. The amount of people running a desktop, that are using any of the server stuff in xorg has got to be pretty close to zero.

Oh yeah, and mac is a unix like operating system too. It by all accounts, works fine enough for any normy to use it. Really the only thing that isn't that is commonly used is windows, and from what I remember they specifically did things differently for the purposes of breaking compatibly with other systems.

You react as if that's a revelation or a bad thing. Most people running desktop Linux do so because they want a more developer-centric experience. It is a highly customizable platform to be built out to your own needs. There are some distros more newbie friendly, like Mint, but at its core Linux is still aimed at enthusiasts and technical professionals. It is precisely because it isn't coupled to a desktop gui that it serves that market.

well its official friends, i have moved over to linux officially. instead of being forced to use win11 in october i figured id just move over while i had the time to dedicate to it.
installing vanilla arch wasnt too bad (considering i havent tried to use anything linux in 15 years), but man, setting up my nvidia GPU was a nightmare.
think im gonna customize some KDE stuff for a bit and get a few more things figured out (like my wacom)

why do people use linux exactly?
Not everyone is enthralled with games.

Us paranoid types just can't get behind all the M$ corporate spyware/malware packed into Windows 10, 11, and soon enough....Win 12! Not that Linux ain't at least trying to do the same, but it's soooo far behind Billie Gates minions it will take years, if not decades, to catch up! After all, Billie was THE purveyor of Palladium, NGSCB, Longhorn, etc., back in the day, hence M$ has a huge head start.

I dual boot Arch and Windows on two PCs (separate drives) and both are borked. If I want to use Arch it’s all fine, if I want to use Windows Grub sez no and I have to do it from the BIOS. They used to work. Both have win on SSD and Arch on nvme.
usually they shouldn't touch each other, the problem is windows likes to go full retard over it's system drive. you can add linux to the windows boot loader to show up, but prepare to add it again after an update.
so just do it the other way around, start from the linux drive and boot windows if necessary. UEFI might make it a bit more complicated, but as usual the wiki provides:

I'm on EndeavourOS atm. I started with Linux Mint, and still have it running on an old 2017 laptop, use it mostly when I travel to places for short periods of time and I wanna game on older stuff.

My main PC (EndeavourOS) is where I game, almost everything is single player offline games. I went from Linux Mint -> Ubuntu -> Fedora -> Manjaro -> Arch -> Endeavour . It is great that most controllers and peripherals work with Linux, I got Honeycomb rudder and switches for flight sim and they work out of the box on Linux.

I have an older PC that I left Windows 10 installed as I use it for my racing sim setup. The gear I have, Fanatec, does work on Linux, but not out of the box, but if I ever need to update firmware, can only do it through windows.

Ultimately, if SteamOS is ever released, and works decently on desktop, I might change and make that my permanent home. Just want to find out if it will work well with triple monitor setup.

This is actually pretty great to see. Linux+AMD graphics card is the way to go. Long gone are the days of weak drivers, now NVidia are the ones having crappy drivers, even on Windoze.

highly doubt that, because that's an area I don't see valve focus on. if there will be a new steamos, I expect it more to be like turning your PC into a more open console with big picture (and the community adding smaller stuff to it), not necessary full blown desktop which they'd then have to support. for triple monitors the underlying distro (I think they're using arch these days) would be able to provide that. so you wouldn't really have to wait, you could use it right now.

considering this I can see why valve didn't really push a desktop steamos, because at least some there will know people will have completely different expectations that will never be met (like it being a big leap for linux or something), turning it into a shitshow.

Check out my previous post, Bazzite is the OS you are looking for.

Call me curious - as a self proclaimed "paranoid type", what would you consider a secure system?

Probably anything with Linux, completely ignoring the existence of IME and all the implications of having an entire instance of Minix you have no access to or control over running at all times way beyond your OS. I sincerely doubt he's one of those true schizos that sources ancient pre-IME ThinkPads to LibreBoot for 100% clean hardware. Dude strikes me as a /g/ schizo and those are the epitome of Dunning-Kruger retardation.
