The Linux Thread - The Autist's OS of Choice

So if you're going to use a secure distro, do shit like encrypting it with a strong password and putting the bootloader on a USB so that you can't even decrypt it without that.
Don't use the persistent storage option and don't run it in a virtual machine, at least if you're using it for something serious. Doing both is fine if you're just evading blocks or whatever. Some places block VPNs, some block tor, for some reason, few seem to block both.

Supposedly, Tor with a bridge node will get passed blocks like that because the bridges are hard to get a list of by design (last I checked, anyway)

Well I think I figured out why my CPU was acting up last week. I rebooted and got a "NO FAN" error. Used lm-sensors to find the fan isn't turning on at all. Ordered a fan on ebay but will probably crack the laptop open to double check all the connections are secure. I spent too much on this laptop to be having these issues...

"Linux users are the vegans of computing" :story:

He's not wrong tbf
Veganism is a quality of life downgrade in every way. Something like "Keto" would have been more accurate, especially since they're just as loud about their diet.
I really hope SteamOS and Valve doesn't fumble the ball and fuck this up, because it's going to be a possible game changer for Linux users. We really need a 'brainless easy to use' Distro for people who don't care about computers. Nothing wrong with 'not getting it', though.
The thing is we've already been there since like 2015 with the idiot-proof Ubuntu distros and I'd even say they're easier to install and use now than Windows, to. With Proton, Playonlinux, Lutris, etc. even gaymen's at a pretty comparable level. All that's really left is to superficially make it look more like windows so it's less unfamiliar to the expats afraid of change but even there we already have Mint. The real problem is that nigger cattle and terminal phoneposters are still falling for two decade old FUD reputations because they only try new things based on peer pressure and conformity???

Noob question, but anyone know how to delete old boot menu options that are still showing up even after I install a new distro (e.g. I'll still see an option for Ubuntu after installing pop-os)?

So I went back to linux and I dont know how the fuck they managed to do it but the shit its even more buggy and unstable than it was 10 years ago.

A decade ago I would install Mint on some random dell laptop or a custom desktop and everything just fucking worked, everything, even the proprietary fingerprint sensor.

Now barely anything does, installed PopOS which I was told was the new "better than ubuntu" and shit cant even see the GPU, had to do everything thru the terminal like in arch, but its debian. Also why no distros support hibernation out of the box anymore? I had to spend an entire fucking day trying to make it work and it still barely does. Getting random black screens after sleep too.

You could try the package "grub-customizer". If you want to do it the manual way just google search "removing grub entries" or some such

They're usually somewhere in /etc/default and most distros have some command or other to prune crap out of it automagically.

@cybertoaster have you tried Windows 10? That's a pretty good non-Linux distribution that I can recommend if you want a great out-of-box experience.

Classic. Nothing is better than Ubuntu.

What do you mean "anymore"? I've never had any luck getting hibernation to work. (I also never use it, ever, so I'm not too upset about it, but even so.)

Getting random black screens after sleep too.
Works on my machine.

This is my biggest linux bitch right now. Even on a igpu laptop from 2016 with everything supported out of the box in Manjaro, suspend/hibernate just fails for no reason with no visible cause in dmesg and the failures are completely random. Sometimes it sleeps fine, other times i'll just reopen it to a 'suspend failed' dialog and 20% battery remaining.

Apologize.
The combo of the btrfs video and someone thanking someone for their contributions made me think for a second Hans Reiser was on the streets again.

While looking for something completely different, I happened to find this Reddit post that explains some of the problems with hibernation.
