The Linux Thread - The Autist's OS of Choice

If you're in India and can't get parts or are comically poor I can see it. That or running a pi but even then that can hit 8gb.
Maybe he was trolling, but earlier there was a guy in this subforum claiming to be so poor he was still on XP and using a bucket as a toilet.
Or like cobbling together computers for homeless families trying to be rehoused, which I do.
If you're HOMELESS I think you have other things to worry about than getting a computer.

It's like those "phone charity" organisations that only give them to battered wives. I'm thinking of calling up one of those and telling them "hi, my wife really wants a new phone and I saw your website. which models do you have available?"

This was way too hardcore for me, I only got into Linux around 2000, when you could have free SuSE CDs in magazines.

Check out what Debian looked like, in 1999. Again, you had to be an enthusiast to go out of your way and try out any of these mysterious Linux distros, but holy fucking shit, we've come such a long way.

Like some video comments said, there's a reason why Linus, back then, said that he tried to use Debian, but gave up.

This, 100%. Arch and Gentoo zoomers have it way too easy these days.

The Debian CD the guy had came with a Myth 2 demo CD! I got mine from a MacAddict mag. I wasted years playing that game. There's still a small community of players that play nightly.

Here's a pic of the lobby right now:

That's pretty cool. I see that it's not listed on Steam or GOG, althought here's a wishlist for it. Hopefully they'll release it.

While on the topic of old-ass distros, this is what Ubuntu 4.10 (circa 2004) looked like.

Boot time only matters in Windows where you have to reboot a couple times a day. It's not like Linux where you only need to reboot once every 6 months.
It's actually amazing how much this is still a problem with Windows. I can have my Linux laptop up for a month or more running all sorts of shit with no problems at all (I typically reboot only when there's been a kernel update these days and just suspend the rest of the time). And yet my Windows work laptop starts getting noticeable issues (graphical glitches, lag, Internet cutting out randomly) if it hasn't been rebooted in a week.

These days I'd recommend either Ubuntu or Linux Mint to a complete noob, they're still the most idiot-proof distros out there for anyone wanting to dip their toes into Linux.

EDIT: I'd go as far as to recommend Fedora, it's pretty robust and it "just works".

Especially when snaps aren't improving any more than the Unity desktop, Ubuntu Vanilla can get fucked; literally install any other Ubuntu based distribution if you insist, but never the official flavors.

On the subject of distros for newbies, honestly I think the best distro for beginners right now is Zorin, however the noob friendly version of it is 40 dollars (At least the license is permanent, I guess).

Am idiot. Can verify. At least re Mint. Fuck Ubuntu though I have no rational reason for it other than it is just uggo.

Linus is a soft-handed faggot. I put Debian potato on an early 486 in 2000 by installing off the floppy disk installer and then manually copying over packages on floppies. WindowMaker made for a great desktop.

Terrain deformation, physics and fire effects that beat most things released decades later.

The problem with KISS and other such simple distributions is that they're cool as long as you have a very simple setup with a few software tools but exponentially grow in complexity as soon as you pull in complicated packages that have tons of different run-time and build dependencies. That's not really a problem with their build managers themselves, mind you, it's more of a general modern software kind of problem.
more of a general modern software kind of problem.
in TYOOL 2016+6 I could not embed a file in a post so see attachment.
E: I can't even post attachment. truly a savage time

Anyway what's the best phone/linux combo if I actually want to be able to make and receive calls?

Android.

(Not even kidding. I'm keeping an eye on the Linux phone space too, but until "yeah it only sometimes drops calls but Linux" stops being a selling point I can't possibly use it as a daily driver. They're still at least a couple of years out from reaching the same level of reliability that you'd find in a $15 Nokia brick phone from the local drug store, so I'm not holding my breath just yet.)
