The Linux Thread - The Autist's OS of Choice

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
I got bored and resoldered some of the blown caps on my old PC. Strangely, it works.

What's the absolute lightest weight distro that's current and has 32 bit support?

If you didn't know, kernel.org has joined the universe of federated social media with social.kernel.org. Torvalds is on it as well. Yesterday he complained that the constant ads finally got him to unsubscribe from the New York Times. Because this particular instance is, by a stroke of luck, not yet defederated from all the fun places, he got this in reply from a Poast user (A):

Hilariously, Linus himself responded. (A)

plumbing.png

Well, I say hilariously, but the fedora tipping and that "plumbing" bit raises some red flags. Still, it's nice to know at least one person who didn't let their Oregonian brain rot affect the code they produce.

I got it running but browsing the internet with 512MB of RAM isn't particularly fun.

Unless I can find a really old version of Opera maybe. But that's gonna be a fuckin' adventure trying to get that working.
If gimped browsers are an option, how about NetSurf or its modern in-progress incarnation - NeoSurf? You'd need to build the latter from source, however.

What the hell Linus? You used to be based.

"woke communist propaganda" - bear in mind the NYT was the rag that thought the 1619 Project was serious journalism. Doesn't seem an unfair comment to me.

> I think that "well regulated militia" means that guns should be carefully licensed

Conveniently leaving out the important part of the sentence: "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed". Argue against the Second Amendment all you want, but you can't argue that it says the opposite of what it does.

Ever since he took a leave of absence after backlash from yelling at a kernel maintainer who should know better, he's never been the same. IIRC it's because he has a daughter or family member or something that's super woke and thus pressured him into being cucked that way.

That's what the struggle sessions do to a man.

It was his daughter.

When is this extremely basic misunderstanding going to die?

The meaning of the phrase "well-regulated" in the 2nd amendment

The following are taken from the Oxford English Dictionary, and bracket in time the writing of the 2nd amendment:
1709: "If a liberal Education has formed in us well-regulated Appetites and worthy Inclinations."
1714: "The practice of all well-regulated courts of justice in the world."
1812: "The equation of time ... is the adjustment of the difference of time as shown by a well-regulated clock and a true sun dial."
1848: "A remissness for which I am sure every well-regulated person will blame the Mayor."
1862: "It appeared to her well-regulated mind, like a clandestine proceeding."
1894: "The newspaper, a never wanting adjunct to every well-regulated American embryo city."
The phrase "well-regulated" was in common use long before 1789, and remained so for a century thereafter. It referred to the property of something being in proper working order. Something that was well-regulated was calibrated correctly, functioning as expected. Establishing government oversight of the people's arms was not only not the intent in using the phrase in the 2nd amendment, it was precisely to render the government powerless to do so that the founders wrote it.

The man who maintains kernel.org and the fedi instance is a Canadian and is a full blown trannie enabler (I had a scroll through his timeline quickly).

It's like when the head of Alibaba spoke out about the Chinese government, vanished for like a year, and reappeared in unceremoniously Thailand or some shit.

Debian 12.0 (bookworm) was relased today.

Replying from a bare metal install, all seems good. My advice is stick to the main ISO now that it's actually useful, then run something like sudo tasksel to get a desktop up and running for your Just Works needs.
