For no good reason I experimented with running modern Linux on a system with 512MB of RAM. Notable issues is that many distro installers will simply not boot, including Slackware which I found surprising. Debian was the best in this regard. TinyCore is insane, but it's extremely out of date. There is no solution to the browser issue. Falkon is a good mix of modern WebKit with a otherwise defloated format. It'll browser small simple websites totally fine but the second you open one modern javascript monstrosity and you're done. NetSurf has extremely basic and unoptimized JS support, w3m-img can get you bloatless JSless browsing.
I had tried Alpine, but I found in reality it hardly used any less memory than Debian at prompt, assuming you have comparable background processes. The memory difference between dash and ash, openrc vs systemd, musl vs glibc is like 1MB. Further to that all my experience shows that musl is slower than glibc. Alpine lacks many packages for desktop usage, because it's not for that.

Debian is my default OS for quick VMs, testing rigs and old PCs. Gonna try out 12 soon.
Big fan of using the XFCE with Chicago 95 it turns it into a very comfy OS to use.

le9 kernel patch with a hefty zram and a regular swap might solve some of the issues with the luck of RAM. Still, good luck doing any web-related tasks on anything other than some obscure browsers like Dillo or Netsurf. Maybe one could get away with an older Pale Moon version with JS disabled and no more than two tabs.

XFCE has always been pretty decent. I prefer LXDE myself but I'm probably alone there. It was over 10 years ago when I tried my first Knoppix live DVD and I've been hooked ever since on the minimalist desktop.
I've been using it on my extra laptop for a while just to get the feel. It really doesn't feel any different than Debian 11. My biggest complaint is unrelated to Debian, but the GTK GUI for Handbrake in the repos is fucking awful. It makes a window that goes off the screen and (like all previous versions) cannot be resized, removed the "show crop lines" option on previews and really fucked up the cropping section in general. I got so irritated with it after a while that I just purged that version and rebuilt the older one from source.

I became aware of it earlier this week. Debian based. The point of interest is that the Russian govt. seems to be going all in on it. And with the way of Western sanctions shooting us in the foot ever more, I can see it becoming quite widely adopted in Eastern Europe and Asia regions. Seems to be getting a big boost from the belief (cough fact cough) that Western Intelligence has its hooks in Windows. They've even gone as far as having an alternative to TPM though I've never heard anything credible to show that's compromised.
Anyway, I got curious because whilst Linux dominates the server space in the West lets be honest - year of Linux on the Desktop has been long put back. A large and modern state mandating it for much of their business, military and administration is a major boost. With that level of userbase and backing, it would be funny if things flipped and it started backflowing into the West. Mainly through its userspace tools and applications. And I would guess though do not know, that with Western sanctions being what they are, Russia might have stopped giving much of a shit about copyright and patent infringement on Western software.
I might have a play with it for curiosity's sake. Just curious if anyone else knows much about it.

What's the point of it? You presumably don't want to buy the Russkies' support plan, and you presumably don't care about their Russian-flavored version of SELinux or compatibility with funny Russian/Chinese hardware. Why not just use Debian itself?

Any reason to think Astra isn't loaded up with Russian spyware? It does not appear to be open source.

I do use Debian. But I think it's interesting for Linux to have a major power go all in on the OS. I think that's going to have an effect on its popularity with more regular folk and lead to improvements in desktop experience in Linux. Though maybe less so in the West.

I don't think the point here is "this distro looks like it would be interesting to use" but more of "the ruskies are pushing official support for this on their entire IT industry, government and normies this could be big for Linux everywhere." It would mean a lot more people running Linux, giving more incentives for people to put stuff on it.

Hasn't China tried this with a CCP variation of an Ubuntu based distro? Or is it the other way around with the distro made by Canonical targeted for the Chinese?

It's called Red Star OS and is based on Fedora. One of it's most interesting features is it watermarks files by appending a 32 byte hex string that contains the system information to all media files loaded on the OS so that they can be traced back to the original creator.

on the topic of tech in china i read on wikipedia that adobe still makes a version of flash but with added chinese spyware in china can anyone verify if thats true if so i can only wonder what they make
