Aren't there Linux "gaming" distros like Bazzite? Those are probably better recommendations for a person who just wants to play games on Linux with little hassle. I know Bazzite has a GUI installer guiding you through when installing it and it uses KDE Plasma so it's more "Windows like".

Let me put it this way.

Linux Mint is a general purpose distro that's used by many, many people and has a large group of maintainers and supporters that help ensure it's stable and that new users can find their way. The maintainers aren't pozzed and do a decent job of ensuring usability and stability is put before following political trends.
Bazzite is a more specialised used by fewer users and has a smaller pool of maintainers ensure it is stable and feature filled.

likely the most visible thing you'll notice is that Bazzite has more gaming stuff preinstalled, but it really isn't that hard to add that stuff to Mint. Also it seems to be "Atomic" where the main OS is a read-only image that gets swapped out when you do a system update. I'm not familiar with using atomic OSs other then Android so i admit I'm a little curious how well that works.

Off the top of my head the only question I'd have is if bazzite lets you fully disable V-sync, as it uses wayland and as discussed earlier wayland blocks the user from disabling v-sync, which can cause problems like double v-sync in some games. Linux Mint's Cinnamon still uses X11 which disables global V-sync when a game is fullscreen.

Turns out the Cosmic memory overuse was because of GNU libc malloc. Here's the patch fixing this:

I read some articles about how a default behavior of glibc malloc causes some applications to consume large amounts of RAM until reaching OOM. There's a tunable parameter called M_MMAP_THRESHOLD (or the MALLOC_MMAP_THRESHOLD_ environment variable) which defines when an allocation will use mmap instead of sbrk.

Small sbrk buffers are stored by malloc in arenas for reuse by the application. mmap buffers are released by the OS instantly on drop. The problem is that the default behavior of malloc is to dynamically increase the threshold if this tunable is not set, which leads to some applications storing lots of randomly-sized gigantic buffers in its arenas, which may never be freed.

This lowered memory usage of cosmic-bg on my system from 96 MB to 25 MB.

I hate Linux. It infuriates me at least once every two weeks. All of the people who develop for linux are retarded mongoloids who can't make proper UX design.
Why the fuck do I need to edit a text file to change my colorscheme? Why can't I have an ncurses menu for that? Why the fuck do I have to use 6 gorillion shell scripts to get a new functionality? All of the tools on loonix barely work with each other (see pywal16 negro magick) and have to be kept barely functioning. I don't give a fuck about muh unix philosophy.

LF, the terminal file manager. No image previews in the base install, have to install some other program to do that, edit the lfrc, blah blah blah. Go to install ueberzug - package no longer maintained. Okay, go to one of the two forks, git clone the thing, make install - UH OH! A FUCKING ERROR!!! Because the developer is a low iq faggot. Okay, go to other fork, it's written in python (homosexual), needs to be installed with pip or whatever the fuck it's called. Okay, pip3 install ueberzug.

Okay, set up virtualenv, install it. But it doesn't work. Why? Oh because ueberzug is in the venv and not in the user directory. OKAY.
Instead clone the source code, install it that way, doesn't fucking work because it's missing a dependency which python can't install for whatever reason, try to install it, can't find it because the package names were made by some autistic manchild. Finally find it, install the dependency. Build the package using.
Now it works.

This is why I rarely change my setup, because every change requires hours of pain. I spent two hours yesterday struggling with pywal16 and the neovim plugin for it.

You're the one who went with st as your terminal. What exactly did you expect? If you want more sloppy options, with cool config and shiny options, you have alacritty and kitty. If you don't care about kinda-UNIX Linux shit, take the GNOME pill and let the spirit of Ebussy into you.

This isn't actually a problem with ST because it works fine, it's not even a pywal16 problem direcrly even. It's fucking xresources which fucks everything up all the time.

It could've been any number of things, including patch sets that, when combined together, fuck your shit up. I've encountered this multiple times when trying to make dwm into something I would enjoy using. Which is why st is about the only Suckless thing that is installed on my computer. Patches are kind of a Bazaar vs. the explicitly supported Cathedral of config options.
 

I had heard of this distro a bit before. But never looked into what I did. Mostly I heard atomic, and rust. And said nah. The rust stuff I still don't care about. But...

The way this distro does the atomic thing. Actually isn't complete shit like silverblue, and all the other faggot fedora shit. I really hope if more distros go the atomic road they follow the approach these people took and stop trying to be nixos but for retards.

Oh I forgot the distro isn't in the title or anything. Serpentos.

it does, but the more outside the average norm you go, the more work you have to put in. windows/mac isn't different, but will fight much harder to let you go besides what "indians/gays think are best practices". you even get the same retardation on linux with gnome and their footfaggotry, they don't even want you to theme their apps.

valid question, but look at it this way: how often do you change your colorscheme? how long would it take to write a GUI for something you do once and then forget forever? and if you can do it via text, why can't anyone else - unless they change their colors every day or something. but if they do, they might as well write a GUI for it, so...
