Exactly, the cutoff is completely arbitrary. And not every Linux distro has GNU, so if you're just going by what the majority of Linux distros have then there should be like 20 different slashes containing a bunch of not well known packages that almost every system has.

Going on a high horse about GNU/Linux is basically just flashing your epeen thinking it's something special but to everyone else it really isn't and you're a weirdo for doing so

I have already said a few times why I don't use Windows. Ever since 7 its just gotten worse and worse, and the experience from 10 and 11 is so bad (and I also didn't use anything that really kept me on Windows other then a few odd utilities) that I decided to jump ship.
My needs have gone more from "Power User" to "Grandma" as time goes on, and I honestly like the KDE apps for stuff more then anything I found on Windows, so would find it much harder to go back these days.

No, I've really stopped caring as much as time goes on as Modern Windows really is that bad and 10 (which I can't stand) was just the start. Its why I jumped for "greener pastures" you could say. As I had never really used a Unix system before it took quite a while to get used to, and in some ways I still am.
Setting something like this up (Windows Classic on Windows 7 look) took like 5 minutes maybe? on KDE, but on Windows it would take several hours with fucking around with various programs like Windhawk that would all break on every update, not to mention all the "debloating" rubbish you have to run. Its just not worth it, especially when I had no real need to stick with it.

I have my complaints with Linux because unlike what most people in this thread and on Reddit say, its not perfect, it has its drawbacks just like Windows does, but I have managed to get used to them or work around the worst parts of it.

Yeah I actually agree with this. I made a similar point a few weeks back. I do think android shows Linux can works fine for what most people want to use it for. But I don't think people just saying android is Linux are exactly right. it uses a version of the Linux kernel, but it's not like it's some Linux distro.

But all this was clearly intentional. Crowdstrike is a bad actor. They did that intentionally to provide plausible deniability to get operatives in server farms all over the world.

There was no 'linux restoration tools' crash. It was a system that hadn't been finished and wasn't relevant to the point of failure.

So I was casually reading some Linux drama on Libre News, and I came across this article that piqued my interest. Supposedly someone named "Asahi Lina" released all of her Asahi Linux code as CC0 after a fight with a developer. But the story doesn't end there: I did a bit of digging and found that the day this meltdown happened was on April 16th, the day after the 4chan hack.

It just so happens that Lina had a similar handle to one of the jannies from the leaks, so while she wasn't a janny, there was probably some collateral damage. Shit gets even weirder when you go to the Asahi thread where there's evidence that Lina and the former lead are the same person. I'm not sure what to take away from this other than that the naming & shaming actually got to him and caused another spergout.
 

To get back to what this thread used to be about. Instead of windows vs Linux.

Our friend drew devault popping his head up. Honestly this reminds me of the hyprland situation. I can't help but feel like this guy will absolutely do anything to hurt the people he disagrees with.

I love every time drew gets referred to as a "child porn enthusiasy" lol. Just amazing.

Perhaps the proper terminology would be "Linux kernel based desktop OS distribution". Linux Mint, Android and OpenWRT have only one trait in common: they use the Linux kernel. But they're three completely different operating systems that you couldn't call the same. The shorthand of using "Linux" when referring to the Linux desktop is confusing at best and disingenuous at worst.

Ideally, the "Linux Desktop" shorthand, with a capital D would suffice. Enough to clarify that we're not talking about the kernel itself that probably even powers Chinese knock-off toys, and the distributions that form a desktop environment akin to that of Windows and macOS that's always the actual point of contention in online arguments, not the kernel itself.

That's the logic that makes it so you can call anyone on North or South America an American.

When normal people talk about Linux, they generally mean desktop Linux and they generally understand Linux to be desktop Linux. Android is android and router software is router software. The most common use for the label gets the label, especially when everything else has a more distinctive name.

But yeah it's probably better to use Linux Mint when talking about Linux so that people who don't know much about Linux end up on the right track. Otherwise they'll end up with with Manjaro or something way over their head.

Unless of course there's a discussion about OS market share, then suddenly everything that runs on the Linux kernel is "Linux". Or that suddenly headless TUI only Linux servers are also "Linux". Though I guess people who go down that route of argumentation, or people who engage in those arguments can't be considered normal so you still have a valid point.

That's why I prefer saying "desktop Linux" or "Linux desktop". The word "desktop" implies what specific Linux based operating systems we're talking about. And I agree that GNU/Linux isn't very accurate, since technically OpenWRT is also GNU/Linux, it's based on GNU packages, but it's not a desktop OS so it's just a distinction between the kernel and any operating system based on it. Like a linear "is/is not" Holy Trinity that goes only one way: Linux > GNU/Linux > Desktop Linux.
 
I need help with dual booting Windows 11 and Arch.
My main PC is still Windows 11 and I need to keep it Windows, since there are a bunch of programs that I need on it. Additionally, I have cooling from Corsair (commander pro + H170i) and as I understood, I can change settings only on Windows.

My issue with dual booting is that i am not really sure what to do with the EFI partition. As far as I understood, I should not make 2 EFI partitions, since it can lead to problems in the future. my Windows EFI partition is around 0.5GB, so it should be large enough to also support Grub for Arch. But I don't really understand the best way to do this and, also, don't understand what problems can occur in the future. I did not find any decent guides. Can anyone help?

Don't bother, either go with a sane distro that just works, like Mint, or get a second SSD, allocate all of it for Arch, and use the UEFI boot menu to change between them. Technically you could put two EFI partitions on one drive and do the same UEFI swap but, y'know, Arch sucks for your traditional multibooting approach.

Install grub to the efi partition. It'll put a grubx64 and shimx64 (for secure boot) file alongside window's bootx64 file. Your computer's firmware will see both options (or all three of secure boot is disabled). Then you add your windows install to the grub bootloader so that you can choose between Linux and Windows on boot without having to launch your computer's boot menu
 
Is having the arch on my second ssd generally a better approach? As I understand not all nvme slots are made equal (I have x670e hero from Asus), so I am not sure how much of a role ot would play. But I do a second nvme drive.

I dual boot Arch and Windows on two PCs (separate drives) and both are borked. If I want to use Arch it’s all fine, if I want to use Windows Grub sez no and I have to do it from the BIOS. They used to work. Both have win on SSD and Arch on nvme.

I do not know why but I’m a noob and I use Windows once in a blue moon so haven’t really tried to fix it.

I mention this purely because if it happens to you, tell me why pls.
 
Quite frankly I think headless servers have a place in Linux discussions because most people who use desktop Linux probably interact with servers as well. I don't think using Linux exclusively as a desktop is a logical choice for normalfags, because the Linux Desktop still functions much like a server. It is one of its selling points, and also one of the reasons it's for enthusiasts.

Linux is not a casual desktop experience like Windows and MacOS are, and in many regards that's a good thing. It would not be as flexible if it was aimed at standard consumers, and wouldn't serve its actual function.
 
When I'm telling people what I run, I say I run Gentoo. Used to say Debian, Arch. I don't mention the kernel or the userland. This semantics game is so gay.
