I am new to Linux and when I was looking for a distro, bazzite felt like some "reddit wholesome" shit with it's "for gamers" marketing. Looks like my intuition was correct.

Wallpapers are bloat, I mean that with utmost sincerity.
Nothing peeves me more than seeing all the posts on r/unixporn with transparent terminal windows overtop a high contrast wallpaper.

I looked them up because I was curious. I can't imagine anybody would seriously use these.

im always particularly peeved by wallpapers with bright spots in them
i dont use an oled monitor but if i did i dont want the fucking cachyos logo burned into my screen
thats why im always perplexed fedora ships with a gnome extension that adds a fedora watermark to your wallpaper and the only way to turn it off is to first install gnome extension tweaks or whatever the fuck theyre calling it these days and disable it through there
bazzite also has a default wallpaper which has a large bright spot on it and it always makes me wonder since gamers are so into oleds these days
thats why i always run very muted colors on my wallpaper. even on my ips my old wallpaper left a few slightly bright spots on the screen that took a while to go away

Every time I ask someone what the benefits of Proxmox are, compared to simply running virt-manager on a plain Debian or NixOS install, their heads start steaming and rotating around. I guess I shouldn’t have made them question the geas placed on them.
In my experience, virt-manager has had dogshit performance, and trying to make it run better seems to involve hours of troubleshooting I've never bothered doing. If you can point me to a one-click solution, I may give it another try, but in its current state, it is pretty much unusable.

Proxmox does everything I need, and there are some nice extensions available to make it even more user-friendly, like ProxMenux which is a console app.

I haven’t run into any issues like that. My only (unreasonable) complaint is it doesn’t support cutting-edge graphics features.

I don’t know how I would begin to troubleshoot what’s up with your machine.

It's super slow and laggy, that's all I can say. It is worse than the already slow noVNC console, and much worse than native RDP from a Windows machine (I'm connecting to a Windows Server VM).

Oh, actually, I think I know exactly what you’re running into. I will hopefully have the solution for you later today after I run some errands and review my notes.

Which distro are you running in the guest?

https://agelesslinux.org/ - there's already a Debian derivative targeting the "no age authoritarianism" concerns that have been discussed around these parts. No idea if it's decent at all, but lovely to see community pushback so quickly.

Edit: It's literally a script to edit your OS such that its author is either maximally non-compliant or maliciously compliant, depending on what you want. Kinda cheesy on one hand, but appropriately inflected on the other. He's literally asking the Californian authorities to come at him so that there can be legal clarity on meaning (and the impossibilities of how California's law's written).

The machine I was connecting from was the host, i.e., Proxmox, latest version based on Debian 13 (Trixie). The guest was Windows Server 2022.

Trying to connect from a different machine running Windows 11 gives me two errors: On the console (cmd.exe), it says:
(virt-viewer.exe:25048): GLib-GIO-WARNING **: 15:45:54.743: Unexpectedly, UWP app `KDEe.V.Kate_25.1201.11022.0_x64__7vt06qxq7ptv8' (AUMId `KDEe.V.Kate_7vt06qxq7ptv8!KDEe.V.Kate') supports 32 extensions but has no verbs

And it gives me this dialog box:
1773586134036.png

Syntax was: virt-viewer.exe [IP address], and I also tried with the .vv file I can download from the VM's Proxmox admin page instead of the IP address.

I need to be able to connect to my VMs from the host machine as well as it makes a few things easier. I have KDE installed there.

BTW, this
KDEe.V.Kate_25.1201.11022.0_x64__7vt06qxq7ptv8' (AUMId `KDEe.V.Kate_7vt06qxq7ptv8!KDEe.V.Kate')
is really weird. I do have Kate installed on this particular Windows 11 machine, and it seems to interfere with virt-viewer/remote-viewer...? Good heavens!

I've been told Ubuntu is a solid choice but does it have compatibility issues with Nvidia GPUs? I know my default choice of grabbing a branch modeled off steam os really require a AMD card.

Painfully new and planning to have a solid chunk of time to troubleshoot just looking for a good starting point to build from.

Its primarily for a gaming hobby computer.
Get Ubuntu.

The Ubuntu ones are more along the lines of deliberately ignoring everything that human beings have learnt about how graphical user interfaces should be in the last four decades, and are absolutely inexcusable and all of those cunts should hang.
POV: retard.

Yes, I’ll die on this hill.

In the current form, it needs to have over 5 million users. Although I think something like apt might hit that mark. Other package managers will likely be well under it.
What the fuck is little Timmy going to download from apt that isn’t age appropriate? sudo apt install pornsimulator2015 ?

They'd probably find a way to lock you out of their distro somehow, seeing how gung-ho they are at blocking people on their socials for any slight criticism they get.
Pointless endeavor. I never intend on using their meme distro! I use Artix fyi.
Now let's discuss the hypothetical-mythical KiwiOS...

My only regular complaint about virt-manager/libvirt/kvm/qemu is graphics performance on Windows Guests. Each of the customers I work with gets their own VM for their VPN or VDI software and it can be a little slow in display. I can RDP from my desktop into the VM to improve performance, but at least one disables their VPN when RDP is active, probably for anti-Jeet measures. And because I run multiples at the same time GPU passthrough isn't a good option.
Worse. Offensive fortunes.
Worse still
Code:
$ sudo apt install cowsay-off

Most everyone over here uses TeamViewer for Windows-to-Windows connections between tech support and customer machine.

A web browser. That's how everyone on a computer accesses porn and social media.

Thinking about it I wonder how this stuff will reach the application level. Will there be some kind of attempted ID verification when using a web browser at some point? Likely in the places where they aren't passing laws to require it at the OS level if so. Although I imagine at a certain point if they do end up requiring to do age verification at the application/program level in one place google is just going to use that everywhere.

At the very least they are going to integrate with whatever api operating systems or app stores/package managers end up being forced to use.

With times like these, it's never felt more important that we get something to break the duopoly between google, and mozilla in the browser market (really a monopoly). Even more important is the duopoly on phone operating systems. All the shit that's happening with android at the same time this age verification stuff is going on wouldn't really matter if there was a true third competitor, rather than just having alternatives that are forks of android. When the entire market is cornered by 2 companies and both of them are evil it meant it was just a matter of time before alphabet decided they could force the kind of control over their shitty OS that apple does (it looks even worse than what apple currently does).

This is gonna sound like a black pill on my end but I honestly don't think there will ever be a way to fully protect your data nowadays.I will take the EU for example. They wish to implement by the end of 2026 the so called European Digital Identity Wallet. I do not care that they say its "privacy-preserving", I do not care that it will be "open-source licensed" so on and so forth, it's still the big fed trying to take your data, go and suck a dick. And still, nobody (that's important) cares or they encourage it.

Now with California's Digital Age Assurance Act (because of course something as dogshit as this would come from Cali), I really don't see a future where you can truly protect your data, and by all means, I do wish to be wrong, I'd be more than happy, this is just my doomer perspective on things.

My hope now is that this retarded act is proven to be feasibly impossible on Linux, but who knows at this point.
