Do i have to do the verify/Integrity check ISO steps when first installing Linux Mint or is this skipable? I am brand new to linux

KUH RINGE enjoy your Deskbloat Enshittenment, a 'good DE' is an oxymoron.
Sorry, I'll use alacritty instead with my custom shit 'rice' where it's an anime girl as the distro icon along with everything being overly pastel pink, white and pastel blue.

Thanks. I just finished setting it up on my thinkpad. Now im down the rabbit hole.
how's it going so far? Anything immediately popping up as a concern? Sound, gpu, everyhing works?
In the sound settings you might want to turn on overamplification if it's too quiet, and if your screen resolution isn't 1080p you might want to turn on fractional scaling controls in the settings tab of the display settings

You better, CHUD. And make sure to have all windows at 20% opacity so you can make out most of the pornographic tastefully risque 3000 year old vampire and none of the text in your terminal, except for your LGBTQIAP+ fetch, of course.

Its been remarkably straight forward so far. The software manager is very helpful but it wouldnt let me install Steam or VLC so I just downloaded them from the web. The UI is great they seem to have taken notes from Apple. My display is 1280x 800, do you think its still worth enabling fractional scaling?

Nah it should be fine, just for example a 13” laptop with a 1440p screen is too small at 100% and too big at 200%

I ended up just installing steam from steam directly, makes it easier.

How do you guys deal with AI crawlers on your home server? I got anubis, but some other bots are bypassing it. I had to block windows and macos user agents, but the other day I saw some using android user agent instead. Soon I'll have to block everyone except linux desktop users from accessing my server to make it usable.
The AI crawlers kill my server, making all cores run at 100% which results in the server timing out requests.
Since you're already classifying user agents, in order of effectiveness:
1. geoIP block country codes China (CN) and Hong Kong (HK)
2. geoIP block Alibaba, Tencent, Huawei, and Baidu ASNs. Fuck the chinks.
3. aggressively rate limit 2 r/s with 20 burst. Doesn't break cgit or git-http clones for normal users.

That cut 90% of crawlers who ignore robots.txt and spoof user agents. What it doesn't stop:
- crawlers spoofing user agents proxied from US infra
- residential botnets

Anubis is shit as others said. There's an article about why that I was linked to: https://lock.cmpxchg8b.com/anubis.html

I'd love to know how you've managed to solve the issue. Beyond aggressive IP banning, CAPTCHA and rate limiting, I'm not sure what else can be reasonably done without costing you extra resources.

From a legal standpoint you could put in a message "banning" AI scraping. But that's essentially what robots.txt says and it doesn't actually stop anything.

If there was a cheap and easy way to detect the AI companies you could also poison their content with slurs and random bullshit, but I doubt that'd do much so they'd likely not notice and blacklist your site (slurs and swears in the bio is how I got an old account deleted on a system where they refused to delete your accounts.)

Tuxedo OS seems to have paid support behind it since it’s a distro for a hardware manufacturer, no idea if that helps or not though
It doesn't matter. You get loads of odd issues with derivative distros, or they do some something retarded with the packages. This often causes issues with installing software from 3rd parties.

It is best to keep with the base distro. Exceptions to this are Mint (ubuntu is garbage), single focus distros like Kali OS and various official spins of the main distro.

🤔
How about switching from Anubis to Tartarus (I don't know if Tartarus needs a different solver, but you'd want to be sure they have the right one), then spicing up your content with lots of invisible links to Kiwifarms so they end up scraping niggers eating cornstarch and the SRS horrors thread?

I’m installing a console only Alpine partition this weekend, just as a project and to see how much I can get out of a CLI in 2026. I plan to use Ranger as a file manager and learn some basics like encryption from scratch once it’s set up. Beyond that I’m thinking it could be a distraction free word processor.

Are there any tools or tricks that might make things easier to begin with? Anything fun? After a live test run it’s frustrating not being able to do basic things without thinking about it, but I’m gonna stick with it.

Just wanted to journal post a little on this. I ended up running Arch, and didn’t get much practical use out of it. A few weeks ago however i picked up an old MSI wind. Like really old. I planned to tidy it up, install Bodhi and sell it on. It couldn’t handle any GUI. 1gb RAM and ancient processor. I figured I’d lost money and it was a dud. And then I remembered I had an arch boot disk. I started it up, and it picked up wifi and yhe notebook ran like it was brand new.

So I went through installation, and discovered it no longer connected to wifi once installed. I fixed that by chroot via live and installing all the tools that way. A lot of referring to manuals and googling.

Having a a stand-alone console, with GUI not being an option was what it took to really get me to commit to this project. The main thing I’m getting is utility and daily use. I’m using it as a word processor which was the main thing I wanted, and reading books on there. I’ve found tools like nmtui and btop that I didn’t even know existed. I still refer a lot to notes to carry out certain tasks, I’ll hit blocks when I want to do basic things, like ‘how do I decrypt this volume without a point and click interface’. But it’s been worth it, and I’m not gonna sell it after all.

I installed tmux and a few other things suggested here, and I want to look at dos box next and some games that it’ll be able to handle playing

Tartarus has not yet been open-sourced.

See recent discussion:

Heroic Launcher and other stuff handles the remaining 9 percent with a 1 percent outlier of very few titles unless you will choke and die if you can't play marvel rivals/fortnite/league.
You know, when I started fiddling with Fedora earlier this year, it led me down a bit of a rabbit hole on security. I didn't know shit about anything and after learning what Ring 0 privilege is, and maybe I spent a bit too much time in rabbit holes, Fortnite and anything else that uses that kind of anticheat is strictly forbidden on my network, no matter how much bitching moaning and crying.

Do you guys still have to double check compatibility with peripherals on Linux
I still avoid anything rgb like the plague even knowing openrgb probably works
As well as mice and keyboards that can't be configured on Linux
Idk not really I have not thought about it in ages. Openrgp has always "Just worked" for me so I just use that.
Mouse/keyboard software not on linux does suck ass but I just have a second pc with windows so I just do it on that, save it to device, and go back to linux with my life.

I guess that begs the question, anyone here know of good software to get that done? For example: Doing keymapping for a MMO mouse on linux.

I suppose it depends on if it's standardized or not

I had a SteelSeries RGB set that had persistent memory so I programmed them in Windows and used them on Linux fine

Generally i'll avoid rgb these days, backlighting on laptops is still nice but they have a function key for toggling the leds.
