Idk not really I have not thought about it in ages. Openrgp has always "Just worked" for me so I just use that.
Mouse/keyboard software not on linux does suck ass but I just have a second pc with windows so I just do it on that, save it to device, and go back to linux with my life.

I guess that begs the question, anyone here know of good software to get that done? For example: Doing keymapping for a MMO mouse on linux.
I was looking into MMO mice but I don't think any of them have Linux configuration
I'm starting to see mice that use a browser app to configure and because of linux's security policy you have to do some fuckass udev rules to get them to work but it does work supposedly

That black box bug happens with other context menus in steam. Apparently for some, disabling text/icon scaling fixes this but for me it only made it slightly worse.

Oh, and the installer opens 3 different windows, with each themed completely different from the last. Makes people coming from Windows feel right at home.

Maybe it's a little less buggy with a DE, but that shouldn't be necessary. It feels like whoever programmed this UI said "good enough" and gave up. I wish this crappy software would get the hate it deserves.

Ah man, I only found out just now that one of the best beginner Linux distributions, ChromeOS, is no more. Google are going to fag it up by replacing it with Android, and you can't haven't been able to run a chroot'd environment from a civilized distribution like Devuan via crostini anymore. At least they're spelling the full name for 'Al' in their gay ass Android fork correctly.
On the other hand, those old Chromebooks will still work just fine as regular Linux PCs, using the eMMC for the base OS and an SD card for user files etc.

Everyone knows the meta is to just download Steam and add everything as a non-Steam game to it. Just werks for Blizzardslop at least.
I remember having an awful time with steam on Linux, that UI is terrible, god I hated it.
As it happens GOG letting you actually own your games and their installers working really well under Wine meant I never actually had any issue with just installing their shit the normal way.
Lutris also integrates emulators as a nice plus.

Basically, why the fuck would anyone want to use their app is my point?

Do you guys still have to double check compatibility with peripherals on Linux
I still avoid anything rgb like the plague even knowing openrgb probably works
As well as mice and keyboards that can't be configured on Linux
Bluetooth mice and keyboards can be a pain. My mouse will disconnect after I update the kernel.

The Steam UI is exactly the same as the one on Windows and macOS.

It handles Proton with like 5 clicks, you just add the game / installer you want, force the use of a compatibility tool > proton hotfix, and voila, that's that. Haven't had a need to experiment with other stuff but when I tried to use whatever configuration of Lutris Nobara ships with it was super janky, so I've just been sticking to Steam since then.

It was totally worth destroying the Gentoo community so they could create their own OS they’d abandon a decade and a half later. 🤬

With the trajectory "iPad OS" (really just a mode for iOS), I wasn't in the least surprised that Android is going to go for a hybrid desktop-mobile OS.

Really, just a Google Windows Universal Platform, except that might actually (unfortunately) have legs unlike the ill-fated Windows Phone 10 experiment.

UWP was a good idea, the only reason why it died was that Microsoft made four mobile OSs in a row that were incompatible with each other and by the fourth one developers just gave up and stopped supporting it.

The MacBook Neo literally runs off an iPhone chip so the concept was doable, but Microsoft dropped the ball deciding how much legacy support the os should have.

If you have games on CD/DVD the installation script often don't work.

Outside of that, many of the scripts would fail if you didn't have a wine prefix setup.

No. I think you are being silly. I think it is reasonably decent. Not a fan of the game overlay.
Genuinely, what do you like about it? I found it scaled weirdly and it has its own theme instead of the system theme as well as just striking me as a bloated pos I don't want to have to use just to play video games.
Lutris and bottles can have a very minimal look, follow your theming and don't require me to log into shit.

Minimum effort to extract revenue from you. Case in point, Steam no longer has its own UI and is instead a pile of shit thrown at Embedded Chromium. Good enough to display sales pages and let you charge your wallet. Windows drifting around, black rectangle artifacts, mouse randomly not working, steamwebhelper raping your system, Overlay and Steam Input being semi-mandatory is not a big deal. GTK fucking you and Qt Krashing = bad. Valve doing the same = good.

My jeetshit window manager that hasnt had any updates in a decade has bugs that dont show up anywhere else and so therefore thats VALVES FAULT!

It isn't, and you can very easily disable it.

linux still doesn't support most software
It doesn't support any software. The job of the kernel is to support hardware. The developer of the software must produce a version that supports the OS they want to support. The OS does not support your software, ever.

I never got the nonsense over Weyland, what's so bad about just dragging your windows around like a normal person, and how can it take years to make a window divider system?

A good portion of all my games are on Steam. I've had a Steam account since Half Life 2 was released on it. Steam was really fucking shit in 2004.
So my Steam account is probably older than many of the people in this thread.

Since then they've improved the application loads.
  • The interface is pretty straightforward IMO and reasonably well organised.
  • Games are easy to buy on the shopfront; I can check out quickly on Steam, and they will install without any hassle.
  • Returns are easy to do. I've returned several games after I bought them, and after about 20 minutes to 1 hour, I had my money refunded.
  • Updates are easy. Games that I have installed update in the background.
  • I have a Steam Link (bought it on sale) and can stream games from my PC to my living room, and it works perfectly even at UHD resolutions.
  • Steam Link can also be used to stream your desktop to your TV. Which means I can use my PC to stream a movie/YouTube to my TV.
  • The "Big Picture" mode makes it basically work like a console, while it can also use a mouse and keyboard plugged into the Steam Link.
  • Switching between different versions of Proton is really easy.
  • Installing different versions of Proton is really easy; you just drop the tarball in the directory and restart Steam.
  • Scaling has been fixed for a while, and before that you could force 1.5 scaling on UHD screens (I did).
As for it being bloated. I just checked the RAM usage on my system. It is using about 400MB of memory.
This website is currently using 350 MB in this tab, according to Brave.

The majority of the Linux desktop is quite frankly a mess visually. You have several toolkits and different versions of the same toolkit that all look quite different, and theming is generally inconsistent anyway across apps. Spacing between elements is all over the place and inconsistent. So something not following the theme, is a "whatever" as far as I am concerned.

Also, the reason it doesn't follow your theme is twofold. The first is branding, and the second is that, like Slack/Discord and a bunch of other Electron apps, the only way to make a cross-platform UI that works well and isn't a maintenance nightmare is to basically wrap a web app.

Lutris works fine if you are using GOG. I had problems using it when trying to play games outside of GOG.
If you want Lutris to log into any of the stores, you do need to "login to shit" still.

As for it being minimal. Lutris has the normal 60 different menu items for the game properties and different profiles. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but the UI, IMO (and this is true of many open-source applications), is clearly in need of a UX/UI specialist.

Don't know about bottles; not used them. The website looks like it's been built by someone that ripped off the Apple website, which automatically makes me suspicious of it.

Only software that does this, mind you. Not even old ass programs or software made by literal Jeets behaves like that. If Sukdeep can do the needful and fix, why drop your standards below shit tier for specific companies?

It isn't, and you can very easily disable it.
Unless you play a set of games that start lagging to shit because you moved your mouse too much and filled up your input buffer. Solution? Enable Steam Overlay.
