I've read conflicting notes on how reliable the combination is, some say it's aces while others say it can be a bit crashy.
Probably due to hardware/drivers.

I have XFCE running on antiX — a Debian-based distro for older and lower-end machines — on a thin client, and it's super stable. No issues when switching resolutions and refresh rates.

Looking for some first hand experience or thoughts: I have a few installations of Ubuntu 24.04, and I've been mulling over grafting XFCE on them. I've read conflicting notes on how reliable the combination is, some say it's aces while others say it can be a bit crashy.

Anyone here put the peanut butter in their chocolate and it work out?
There is literally no reason not to use XFCE with Ubuntu 24.04 if you have already installed Ubuntu.

It's a bit heavyweight, but obviously less so than the standard Gnome session.

The version of XFCE on 24.04 is not crippled by Wayland and will work normally and well as the Linux desktop does.

And obviously, if you were to encounter problems, all you would have to do is launch a Gnome session rather than a XFCE one.

In my anecdotal, unverifiable opinion: skip Xubuntu, skip installing Xfce on your standard Ubuntu setup, and go with Linux Mint Xfce instead. Xubuntu used to be genuinely excellent kit back when the tagline was still "Linux for Human Beings." Sadly, everything outside of standard Ubuntu and Kubuntu have more or less atrophied to the point of being abject rubbish. Even then... Ubuntu 16.04 was the last hurrah for a truly excellent Ubuntu experience before Canonical changed gears and started dumping all their eggs in the Server/Enterprise/Cloud/IoT basket.

Xubuntu nowadays feels like something that exists purely because it has to, not because anyone gets any joy out of maintaining it. Even if you're not using Xubuntu, the Ubuntu Xfce experience always felt kinda sorta janky whereas Linux Mint doesn't. Try it in QEMU if you're up for it.

First off the logos been cleaned up but also KVM support now works. when booting up under KVM mode the logo turns blue to indicate KVM(KVM takes longer to start up due to reasons outside my control)
Drastically increased speed of both KVM and TCG. The bootup time is INSANELY fast and that 1 second delay on the boot screen so only so you can enter the setup.

Within less than 0.3 seconds it tries BOTH uefi boot and then moves to seabios legacy boot. Which can be changed to use the built in AMI legacy boot system.

This is pretty much the final version to this project. If you have any ideas for features tell me.

Notice the 4L and 8L EVs being defined? Those indicate the amount of layers in a motherboard, EV likely means evaluation vehicle. I see zero references for Hermosa Beach being the codename for a platform. That's why I don't believe in it being the codename for a platform.
im not doubting that Hermosa Beach is not a platform. its very likely not a platform and your completely right. I do believe that it is a Early Haswell Testing board just like you said

I didn't word my previous response to you correctly about that. I also yeah I did get way to overambitious saying "This is a early intel platform we have the arc of the covenant".

I have no problem with AI in my linux if it's used to help the development of a project and the developer knows what the code actually fucking means, but the reality is that once AI caution is softened you're going to get a bunch of fucking trannies, Indians and Pakis doing their best to copy and paste Claude code that they have no idea what it does.

There's also the big threat of the 'power janny' conundrum where a highly respected developer with expertise in package A feels like they could fix package B just as easily, even though they're not as experienced with package B than they think they are.

Given the improvements over the past year I'd say we're edging fairly close to Claude being able to optimise while coding, which is going to do incredible work for barely maintained packages holding on by a thread. Right now it still seems to pick the easiest path to coding instead of the most efficient, which, even if it 'just works' just isn't good enough.

OpenWrt is in serious need of a decent fork.
  • Fully moved everything (issues, PRs, etc) to third party jeethub, with no viable alternatives. Microslop erroneous flagged your account? Too bad, now get lost.
  • Merging AI authored PRs. A security and performance first distro/OS.
  • Some that still go through jeethub to submit issues and PRs will still find themselves ignored often enough.
  • Have no problems with bending the knee for woke demands, such as moving its snapshot branch from "master" to "main".
  • Every new major version comes with new nasty regressions.
And with this one, we don't have a million other distros we can switch to, it's either SlopWrt or Slop OEM firmware.

Yeah retard, I am totally going to follow your demands with the way you treat your contributors.

Linux motto these days: if it's big enough, apply enshittification, saar.

Setting up a router with Free/OpenBSD or a really light Linux a la Alpine isn't hard at all if you're keen to read a couple man pages. OpenWRT has LUCI as a web interface IIRC, never really used it much. If you have an old OptiPlex or other minipc you can get a really beefy router and or entry point for >100$.

I am aware, but the root of the issue lies in wireless chips and repurposing old devices. There isn't much choice or quality when it comes to home grade radios for APs, majority of hardware manufacturers don't even have open source drivers, which means you are stuck with OEM crap.
The best cost-efficient deal is to get some cheap home routers or APs, flash them with OpenWrt and run them as dumb APs.
As for old home routers, turning the stuff people are about to throw away into managed switches and services for your LAN is pretty sweet.

But I am pretty tired of the jeetification of OpenWrt and have been considering buildroot, pulling from upstream the bits I need from OpenWrt while keeping the bloat and slop away. This is a huge amount of work because I have a bunch of different devices to work with, with OpenWrt I just build images once per major release, skipping newer releases for the more resource limited devices. I don't have time for this level of sperging though.
The alternative, which I have been doing for a couple of years, is to leech from them, contribute nothing back and keep an eye for the next set of regressions that will break shit up.

I have done the deed, a entire wine installation and a fully installed version of microsoft word that opens in one click with no setup or activation or prompts.

I thought it would be funny to like distribute this under a fake name with no context on like linux fourms.. Only to realize that you can't distribute 188mbs because you need a whole packaged version of wine for it to be run as one portable file.

There's always mega.nz

Ive used that to share my ebook collection its pretty good.

I think it would be hilarious to have a set of windows apps distributed as app images.
For how fast this thing starts I think it negates the fact its 188mbs.. and that it requires no setup or anything.
and to be honest the only reason its not faster is because this is running on my SATA ssd and not my NVME

Ok trying this on my NVME(Which isn't the root device just a external NVME device. which sucks because i doubt im getting the full performance)
and yeah it is fast

Now to be honest to set up the appimage, set up a WHOLE wine system and set up all those processes like ... hold up
1790903253637.png
all of these processes.
And then after that start word. All within. like 0.1 seconds ... honestly even less, ill be honest thats pretty impressive.

Anyways if you want to try it out you can do so here

does anybody else make their own icon and gtk themes?

It was much more common in the halcyon days of GTK2. The problem is that GTK3-onward basically has so much shit changing at a whim because of the incompetent retards who hijacked control of the GNOME Project 15+ years ago. Can you make your own icons and themes? Absolutely. Can you guarantee that they'll work in perpetuity? Absolutely the fuck not.

So finally bit the bullet and configured my fstab file to add the disks that kept refusing to automount in KDE-disks. Turns out you niggers were absolutely right about it not actually being that hard, it's just a little intimidating looking. Essentially as long as you don't fuck with the main mounted drive you can make as many fuckups as you want and all it'll do is refuse to mount the other drives.

Then immediately after fixing this I found I could have just installed gnome-disks and clicked two buttons to achieve the same fucking thing.

Now with my disks mounted in a stable state that don't change their names after every mount, I can now point all my emulators to my big ROMs folder on my SSD and free up like half of my boot drive.

In other news, the amount of game decomps with native Linux builds is astounding. I've spent the afternoon playing Jak and Daxter, Smash Melee and Banjo Kazooie ALL NATIVELY. With absolutely everything maxed out it's not even putting a dent in my CPU usage. Anything without a linux build (like say, SM64+, or THAW) can literally be played by linking the .exe file in Steam and it boots like a dream.

He is correct tho. Open-source is now a patented property of Micro$oft and that's the way it is.
They simply prefer the reach and contribution of dozens of retarded zoomers over (You).
Hey, don't mock my Microsoft™ Linux™ JeetOS™ Edition, bro. On top of retarded open source project leaders not following something as simple as this https://unixdigest.com/articles/important-open-source-projects-should-not-use-github.html we also have retards in IT circles telling people they should run VS Code on Linux.

From the same SlopWrt crowd

Can't we go back to the 90s/early 2000s, when open source turbo autistics were actually knowledgeable and skilled? Unironically, I would take a wife killer to write my FS over the retards we have now (btrfs, Oracle's garbage, had a critical data loss bug in kernel 7.2 RC).
