The Mandela Effect... - ...or I remember it differently so the universe is wrong.

I can use that line on my know-all sister: "Oh you remember it differently so the universe must be wrong."

The original series of Berenstain Bears books had a simple typo made by a typesetter, who saw stein instead of stain and set it up as that. The proofers didn't catch it, the printers didn't catch it, and the books were sent out that way.

no not really but it makes as much sense as some loony alternate universe theory.

One interesting instance of this effect that I've read about is one about the ending to The Wizard of Oz: some people claim that there's a version of the ending where Dorothy is shown wearing the ruby slippers when she is lying in bed at the end of the movie.

Honestly I think that'd be a cool ending, the whole I guess it did happen! or did it?! I love ambiguous endings and Hollywood is way to cowardly to do it too often...that's why I loved the ending to inception..did the thing keep spinning forever or was it just about to drop after the cut.

Typesetting can be a pretty daunting task in those pre-digital days.

Here's a minor one that's been floating around about Charmander having a back spike in RBY versions. The Bulbapedia wiki acknowledges that it pretty much disappears once the anime became a thing. You can even see it in his backsprite in those games.
Basically people were trying to get others to freak out if they didn't remember Charmander having it, when it's more like something the designers dropped after the initial promo art so why would anyone remember it?

Boy am I glad I don't live in that universe, I already put up with enough bullshit in college, having some stoner tell me how "dude, the Wizard of Oz is a total mindfuck bro, at the end she's wearing the slippers! Did she dream it or was it real?!" would have pushed me over the edge.

A channel call Top5s uploaded a documentary on The Mandela Effect. Nothing really special about the video itself, but in it he asks the viewers for any experiences that may be related to the subject and this little gem caught my eye:

That's not Mandela, that's just being fucking stupid.

I'm pretty sure the nice fellow Samuel Collingwood Smith, a conservative politician-turned-activist known online by the pseudonyms Matthew Hopkins and Vordrak, managed to close down several wicked trolling sites. However some people tell me this didn't happen, but I'm sure I read in the papers so it simply must be true!
