Culture "The Most Mysterious Song on the Internet" has been found! The song is called Subways Of Your Mind by FEX.

So here's the story in short:
About two weeks ago I came across an old newspaper article in the Nordwest Zeitung archive, while researching Hörfest bands. The article was about a band called FEX from Kiel, who won a talent contest in Bremen in Sep 1984 and their music was described as Rock with Wave and Pop influences. It also mentioned their members and one of them I recognised from a Hörfest 83 band called Phret. I managed to get in touch with him and asked him if he still had some old material from those bands. He then sent me some of the songs he made with FEX and Phret... and lo and behold, one of them was titled Subways Of Your Mind. It's a slightly different version from the one we know: https://vocaroo.com/19NFyeqYi7Zj
After I emailed him back that the song is actually quite a famous "lost song", he asked me not to go public with it until he spoke with his old band members. In the mean time though the song did get registered at GEMA and people found out about it. But I'm happy to say that the band members agreed for me to go public with it. So here it is.
I'm sure there will be a lot of questions and I hope the band can answer these themselves in the future. I'm just glad and relieved the search is over :)

I love the fags demanding a reason to care about a 17 year old internet culture meme.

This is Kiwifarms, thats all we care about lol
To be fair, we are in A&N. Look at other articles here: it's either politics or something terrible happening. Some regulars are just surprised when something fun and joyful is posted here.

I haven't listened yet because I'm at the gym but I give it like a 6% chance this isn't either 1) the original run through RX11 and fed to an AI or 2) a recreation being passed off as the original or 3) a combination of the two.

Aspies have been going full zapruder tape on less popular songs for decades trying to identify what synth/amp/mic made what sound, I can easily see someone downloading the right VSTs and making an "alternate take" for reddit clout.

Not trying to be a bonerstomper but this feels like another KFC Murder Chicks.

From a cursory glance of the OP, it is legitimate and they are in contact with the original band members. According to the comment section, the Reddit Op is an autist and it was likely to be him to find this, so there's that I suppose.

Live* version, recorded at the Roxy Paderborn on 25 May 1985

Not the live version, this was recorded in a practice room prior to the studio recording. Apparently FEX has a live recording from the Roxi Paderborn on May 25th, 1985. It can't be too long until that resurfaces.

I’m skeptical, but the band is supposedly going to drop evidence that this is actually their song by the end of the week.

The subreddit is terrible. Zero archiving. Zero experts in audio analysis and the industry aside from a few self-professed ‘musicians’. The analysis thread is laughably amateur.

This is a textbook example of why you don’t run your subculture on Reddit.

The recordings don’t sound like they’re from a cassette tape. The dynamic range is strangely high (no hiss) but there’s weird pumping that makes it sound overly compressed. They also have clipping.

Actually, it kind of reminds me of "(I Just) Died in Your Arms" by Cutting Crew.
I don't know why but it sort of reminds me of There Is a Light That Never Goes Out (fuck the Smiths and their gay ass song titles).
Oh wow cool.

Anyway
Don't make me tap the sign
