The NBA Thread

Looks like China was triggered by what Enes Kanter said about Tibet.

The Boston Celtics are facing blowback in China after center Enes Kanter posted a video voicing his support for Tibetan independence.
The reaction was swift. The Chinese video-streaming giant Tencent cut the live broadcast of Wednesday’s NBA game between the Celtics and New York Knicks. On Thursday, Chinese social media was filled with angry fans calling for a boycott.

The NBA has increasingly found itself embroiled in political controversies in China, as Beijing demands that foreign enterprises hew to China’s political positions to retain access to the vast market. In 2019, Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey voiced support for Hong Kong pro-democracy protesters, drawing fallout in China that continues even today for Morey’s new team, the Philadelphia 76ers. The NBA and the Celtics did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

In a video posted on his Twitter account Wednesday, Kanter spoke for more than two minutes in support of Tibetan independence, a stance that is illegal in China.

I like that China is exactly like Twitter where if one random player says something bad, China will throw a fit and ban the entire team or even teams completely unrelated off of their airwaves.

That Chinese money must really be worth it to keep shitting on your own American audiences.
The next question is how long that Chinese money will still worth something with the current Evergrande turmoil for the NBA?

I can’t believe I didn’t know about this, but almost a few weeks ago, Pau Gasol announced his retirement from the NBA.

The last couple of weeks, he was on Twitter thanking not just the NBA but also the teams he was on – Spurs, Bulls, Lakers (obviously), Blazers, etc.

However, I actually remember that my fond memories of Gasol was when he was on the Memphis Grizzlies dating back to the early 2000’s:

Either way, he said he’ll be trying to get in the front office or executive positions of a team in the NBA in the near future. Before his brother Marc (almost) stole all the fame, Pau was really one of the most accomplished power forwards of his time. Sure he was no Tim Duncan or Dirk Nowtizki, but for his time, he paved the way for Spanish players to get on the basketball court. That alone deserves some credit.

Like Nicki Minaj before him, Kyrie Irving is gaining more support for choosing not to get the vaccine. Interestingly enough, the Brooklyn Nets are currently 1-2.

He was always solid when he played for the Bulls, even though he was past his prime at that point.

Speaking of the Bulls, they are absolutely fun to watch so far. Multiple offensive threats and their defense has been well beyond what was advertised. Alex Caruso is already getting MVP chants in Chicago (half-jokingly, Brian Scalabrine used to get those too and he was considered "the human victory cigar" who only played at the end of a blowout, but AC has been arguably the hardest worker on the court in the games I've seen, and Chicago fans LOVE that mentality). I'm really interested to see how November goes for them, because that's basically the hardest part of their schedule for the whole season. The only thing I worry about is that their lineup trends on the smaller side, so bigger teams will likely be able to grind them down physically.

Ok, so is Lebron actually injured, or is he just faking an ankle injury because he thinks he is above playing October basketball?

Also, holy shit can the Lakers not play defense. They've given up 115+ in ALL five games so far.

I don't even really follow the Lakers being on the East coast, but this is interesting to me for some reason.

Also, LOLKanter. I love it when someone gives no fucks and just openly calls out Nike AND Lebron.

to be fair is he wrong? a majority of teams make the playoffs, and most are such dogshit that even taking some games off mean you still get in. teams with majority loss records routinely make it in. all sports would be better off if they only accepted the top 8 teams (top 4 from each conference) maybe a play-in game for the 4th seed but besides that, it would literally stop this shit from happening. Or at least happening as often.

OTOH he's the 4th oldest player in the league and the next two are less than a year older than him, he's been in the retirement zone for awhile, all signs point to this being his 2nd to last season. "career ending injury" will be the question on everyones mind whenever he flops from here on out. few make it past 15 seasons, he's in his 19th season, very few make it to 21 seasons or over 1400 games played, even with the best health tens of millions can buy.

I'm all for maintenance days, but you would think he would get his team in a good position first and then take periodic days off. More than Kawhi method (although he actually has a long-term injury right now.)

Lebron is sitting out the first games of the season when his team is struggling to find an identity.

Especially when the Lakers are coming off a season in which they actually had to play in the "play-in game" against the Warriors. You would think Lebron would at least make sure that the sixth seed was secure first so that doesn't happen again.

The defense thing isn't a concern because no one really plays defense all that much during the regular season anymore. It's large part why I don't even bother watching until after the All-Star Break or even at all until the playoffs.

They really fucked up by adding Westbrook to the equation. There's only one fucking ball on the court at a time so of course LeBron going to be the primary ball handler if he's good to go, regardless of whether Westbrook works better under that role or not. That's why they're looking a little more effective without LeBron.

Plus this Lakers is team is old as fuck anyway so once the injuries pile up, it's going to do more harm than good.

I want to know where the NBA got this "2 months for the J&J vaccine", because I'm sure they must have consulted somebody on it. I don't think the NBA pulled it out of thin air.

LeBron James has responded to Enes Kanter’s political activism taking aim at him not speaking out against the Chinese Communist Party’s government

Somehow from the video, it seems that he is only thinking about himself. While it could be argued that LeBron and Kanter are professional athletes and not politicians that should not hold too much influence because of their personal opinions, this actually makes LeBron sound more like a businessman protecting his profits, while not even bothering to have a face to face to him.

That and plus, recently, LeBron intentionally poked a Detroit Pistons player’s eye out:

He then was ejected, as it’s his only second ejection in his almost 20 year career.
