Which arena/broadcaster has the best video quality and commentators? They're definitely not equal.

So in what ways is the league fucked this year?

I'll die on the hill that trading Luka was the right call the Mavericks just could have gotten more. Watching him now compared to his rooke and bubble years is striking. He really is fat and incredibly slow and can't get to the rim anymore. If his stepbacks stop falling and teams realize they don't need to blitz on the perimeter, he'll be useless.
I think a lot of that is just post-injury slump, he's really been hurt all the way back since last year's playoffs where his knee sleeves would finish every game visibly soaked with blood. He's not really in MVP contender form at the moment but he's been getting his numbers up again as of late. I'd be optimistic about him myself. I feel like even if he did run into issues and decline, the blow Dallas did to themselves as a free agency destination would not be worth it. How are they going to get guys to come if they'll be treated like that?

If you want to trade Luka, I think it has to be done on better terms and you have to actually shop him out there. Anthony Davis isn't a scrub but getting him and a pick for Luka when your stated reason for doing so is injury concerns is laughable.

Video quality I dunno what to ascribe to the broadcast itself and what to chalk up to the inherent issues of [COMPLETELY LEGAL WEBSITES] but in terms of commentators I actually like the Hornets quite a bit just because they seem to really be fans and get really into the games. They're certainly not a team I'm going to seek out but if I feel like watching a team playing against them one night I can count on the commentators to add to it.

Damian Lillard's season is over thanks to a blood clot.

Milwaukee Bucks star Damian Lillard has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis, also known as a blood clot, in his right calf that will sideline him indefinitely, the team announced Tuesday.

Lillard, 34, is on a blood-thinning medication, which has stabilized the clot, according to the team. He went through a series of meetings with specialists over the past several days to diagnose the blood clot, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania. He has been on blood thinners for a period of time now.

"Damian's health is our No. 1 priority," Bucks general manager Jon Horst said in a statement. "We will support him as he moves through this weekly process of strict criteria to ensure that it is safe for him to return to play. Doctors have indicated that his situation is very unlikely to occur again. We are thankful that this was identified and medicated quickly, which helps with the recovery."

Unfortunate for the Bucks, they were unironic championship contenders just from the standpoint that there certainly isn't a championship favorite or powerhouse in the league right now.

Dallas Mavericks need new arena by 2031-2032 season, CEO says

Article | Archived

The Brief

  • Mavs CEO Rick Welts says the team needs a new arena by the 2031-2032 season.
  • Welts says the team is pursuing "every single possible option" to keep the Mavs in Dallas.
  • The CEO also said the Luka Doncic trade showed him the emotional connection between the team and the fans.
DALLAS - New Dallas Mavericks CEO Rick Welts says the team will need a new arena soon.

Welts joined the Mavericks broadcast during the second quarter of the game against the Knicks on Tuesday night. He discussed a potential move for the Mavs and the overwhelmingly negative response to the Luka Dončić trade.

New stadium coming for the Mavericks?

There have been many rumors surrounding the future of the Mavericks in recent weeks. Some have theorized the Mavericks will move to Las Vegas, the home of Mavs governor Patrick Dumont, while others have theorized that the team will move to the old Texas Stadium site, which is owned by Dumont's Las Vegas Sands Corporation.

The Mavericks have played in downtown Dallas for the entirety of their existence as a franchise, playing in Reunion Arena from 1980-2001 and the American Airlines Center since then.

What they're saying:

Welts said that the team has engaged with the city of Dallas about the future of the team.

"Our commitment is to find a home in Dallas. That's where we want to be. That's where the city wants us to be and we're going to pursue every single possible option to make that happen," Welts said.

When asked about the American Airlines Center, Welts said the arena is a great place to watch a basketball game, but is lacking amenities that "fans expect in 2025."

He says that steps will be taken to improve the fan experience at the AAC while they are still there.

"We're very much hoping to be able to invest significantly in the remaining time we are there. We need to be in a new arena for the 2031-2032 season. We're on the clock," Welts said.

Luka Dončić Trade

The Dallas Mavericks have struggled since trading Luka Dončić to the Lakers for Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a first-round pick.

What they're saying:

Welts previously said the organization had "underestimated" the fans' response to the Luka Dončić trade.

On Tuesday night, the Mavs CEO shared a message to fans.

"What this really proved to me was the emotional connection between our fans and this team," Welts said. "The wonderful thing about our business is these things have a scorecard, right? Time, wins and losses will tell whether the deal was a good deal or a bad deal."

Welts then made a promise to Mavericks fans.

"Whatever trust we have lost or whatever concerns they have, we're going to earn it back because we're going to do this the right way, and we're going to win championships," he said.

Welts on current Mavericks

Despite key injuries and struggles, the Mavericks are still competing for a spot in the NBA Playoffs.

The Mavs are currently the 11th seed in the West, one spot out of the play-in game.

What they're saying:

"I love everything about the way this team is playing," Welts said. "I think [head coach Jason Kidd] has done an amazing job of keeping this team connected."

Welts says the fight shown by the current shorthanded team shows the culture of the team.

Anyone been following the LeBron-Stephen A. Smith stuff? I'd only really been passively aware of it until recently where SAS seems to have taken things into a weirdly personal direction. The summary from what I can tell from skimming up to this point is that SAS said LeBron was a bad dad for pushing Bronny (because we all know the biggest victims of nepotism are the nepo babies) and LeBron confronted him about that in person, SAS didn't like that and LeBron overtly mentioned his low opinion on the NBA media.

He says LeBron missed Kobe's memorial, which doesn't appear to be true. He says LeBron missed Dwyane Wade's HOF induction, which is true but he missed that because Bronny was literally dying at the time. I get that SAS isn't the brightest and is essentially a professional troll but this seems rather wacky even for him, given he's still headlining ESPN at the end of the day.

Mark Cuban Says He ‘Fully Expected’ to Run Mavs After Selling Team

Adam Silver said Cuban’s situation with the Dumont family was “a function of an arrangement” and not contractual.

Mark Cuban continues to weigh in on the Luka Dončić trade more than a month after the Mavericks shipped their franchise star to the Lakers and reveal more about his sale of the team in doing so.

In a Facebook post on March 21, former Mavericks event manager Gavin Mulloy wrote that “Cuban should be run out of Dallas,” in an apparent reference to allowing the trade to happen.

On Sunday, Cuban chimed in.

“I did every damn thing I could for 23 years,” Cuban wrote. “Kept prices lower than not only any NBA team, but lower than college teams too. I made money 2 out of 23 years I was the majority owner. Lost hundreds of millions of dollars.” The interaction was first reported by The Dallas Morning News.

Mulloy replied that Cuban got a bad deal and should have retained control of basketball operations.

“Actually I fully expected to run basketball,” Cuban replied. “The NBA wouldn’t let me put it in the contract. They took it out,” Cuban wrote about his sale to the Adelson family. “I thought they would stick to their word because they didn’t know the first thing about running a team. Someone obviously changed their mind.”

On Thursday, NBA commissioner Adam Silver was asked about Cuban’s comments at a press conference after a Board of Governors meeting. The question came in light of the recent sale of the Celtics for $6.1 billion, which involves current governor and CEO Wyc Grousbeck staying in those roles through the end of the 2027–2028 season.

Silver said he doesn’t consider the two situations similar and that it was too early to weigh in on the Celtics details. He also added that Cuban’s involvement with the Mavericks after the sale was never a written agreement.

“I think the situation was very different in Dallas,” Silver said. “I think there was a clear change in control of the franchise to Patrick Dumont and his family. Any decision as to what Mark’s role would be in basketball operations was a function of an arrangement to be made between Mark Cuban and Patrick. The ultimate governance was absolutely clear as presented to our board that the last word on any basketball activities or any significant decision for the franchise would be made by Patrick, and I think Mark’s acknowledged that.

“And whether or not his expectation was that he would have played more of a role in basketball operations, I don’t think Mark has ever suggested that there was a contractual issue at play here,” Silver added. “That was just his understanding of what the arrangement would be between him and Patrick Dumont.”

Cuban sold the Mavericks in December 2023 to the Adelson family for $3.5 billion, but still owns roughly 27% of the team. He has been outspoken about the Dončić trade, saying the team should have made a “better deal.”

The Mavericks have faced an avalanche of injuries since trading Dončić in February, including star guard Kyrie Irving to an ACL tear and Anthony Davis to an adductor strain, the latter of which was the key return from the Lakers. The team is currently 36–38 for the season, which has them in 10th place in the Western Conference standings and in the final spot for the Play-In tournament.

The last 12 seconds of yesterday's Bulls Lakers game were wild:
That comeback was insane, and a good example for why it can be a bad idea to stop watching before a game ends.

The shocked Lakers fan in the crowd is probably going to become a meme:
I absolutely love the over-the-top shit you get from local commentary teams. Maybe ten percent of the audience gets the Sanford and Son reference, and that ridiculousness is perfect.

Anyone catch the Pistons T-Wolves fight?
Seven ejections lol, the Suns and Rockets apparently had a scuffle too but nothing like the Pistons Wolves one.

Speaking of the Wolves, their game against the Nuggets tonight was crazy, especially that ending. Westbrook what the fuck lmao

Funny thing is there were more jokes about Pistons getting into more fights than actually winning games, and now I found out that they’re possibly in the running for the playoffs this year with (Perhaps?) the play-in tournament.

It took a while to break up but it was a typical basketball fight a bunch of nip to nip chest puffing, pushing shoving, a bunch of "AY MAN!'S" & "AY NIGGA!!'S'" But nothing actually entertaining and all it did was kneecap the pistons because they lost their coach, their high floor back up center and one of their PG's which wouldnt be so bad had Cade played.

They have at the very least clinched a spot in the play in tournament, they also trippled their win total from last year. By the end of the year they'll probably end up with at least the 6 seed. J.B. Bickerstaff and Trajan Langdon have managed a Brad holmes-Dan Campbell esque turn around of the Pistons this year. And they're actually watchable because Cade Cunningham actually has an NBA roster around him this year instead of Malachi Flynn, Isaiah Livers, and Killian Hayes. Also Malik Beasley is leading the league in 3PM from the bench and is a shoein for 6th MOTY. Its been a great year considering we had the worst record in the league last year and didnt get the 1st pick in the draft.

Might as well introduce myself to the thread.
Huge magic fan here. Was KCP the worst signing we've ever done? 3 years, 66 million. Hasn't scored above 24 points this year, barely makes good shots, just under 2 assists a game. what the fuck did we sign him for?

And with the win last night over the Raptors the Detroit Pistons have clinched a spot in the NBA playoffs proper, not just a spot in the play-in. Completing one of the most miraculous 2 year turn arounds in NBA history. I honestly cannot stress enough how bad and unwatchable the pistons were last year. This really is a miracle.

Seems he's having a down year, he's usually ~40% from 3 and you guys could really use the spacing. Funny enough the Nuggets actually miss him quite a lot for defense reasons, you gotta surround Jokic with good point of attack defenders to hide him on defense as much as you can.

Didn't your coach last year flat out say he wasn't in the right headspace to coach and didn't want to coach until they offered him so much money he couldn't really say no? Why did management want him so bad lol

yea I know. our guards aren't great but the one thing we have is plain youth. all we need is a great PG to complement Paolo and Franz and we're a top 4 seed with our bench when their consistent. also start goga more.

Tom Gores has a hardon for coaches who have won COTY. Both Monty and Dwayne Casey before him won the award, but not a championship, which is why they were both fired after winning COTY.
