Irsay was specifically talking about making all calls/penalties in the final two minutes reviewable. It's not about the league being soft on calls throughout the game to engineer the sport in a style they think will be most popular, it's about preventing those frequent nit-picky calls late in the game that either make fans think the refs are gambling on the game or the overall league is trying to rig who wins the championship.
I really don't think it will matter. All touchdowns and turnovers get reviewed and mistakes are still made. I'm just not very optimistic about the referees.
Roughing the passer calls have gotten a little ridiculous, but its an over correction from when you were allowed to just destroy a quarterback if he threw it half a second before you got to him.

As for the protecting star QBs from getting hurt because nobody wants to watch a backup QB play, I agree. Star QBs are hard to find and even average QBs aren't plentiful. Why would anyone want to watch a journeyman back up play against a 5th round rookie for some of these games? And that isn't to say that I don't want a good defense, but I at least want a defense to be challenged
I forget when the 2 step rule was implemented but I felt like that was where the line should've been. Now it's basically looking at the QB the wrong way. You can't hit too hard, you put too much body weight on him, you can't slam him, you have to watch and not roll into his legs, etc. Its ridiculous and makes it too difficult to sack the QB for dumb reasons. I hated when Brady would get every penalty thrown in his favor for a defender looking at him the wrong way but at least it was just him. Now it's every QB getting these bad calls.

I agree nobody wants to watch a backup play but people get hurt. It's part of the game though and sometimes that's how players can get their chance.

I love clown ball so yes this is exactly what I want. I want it too look like blood bowl where the ball is flying up every 5 seconds while something that looks like a nurgle slams zach Wilson into the ground.

I saw one of these at a big-box store and was sorely tempted in the moment. They are apparently widely-available, so if you wish to indulge, who am I to say no?

People act like there has never been a case of a backup QB getting his shot and becoming a great player in their own right.

Remember Don Majkowski ? If he doesn't get hurt, then Brett Favre never gets a shot.

How about Drew Bledsoe ? No one remembers that he was a really good NFL QB. They just remember that he got hurt and that started the legend of Tom Brady.

Joe Montana and Steve Young ?

The whole game being turned into pussy ball because precious "starting QBs" need to be protected is pretty fucking infuriating.

Great organizations understand that developing players, from career backups to undrafted rookies on Practice Squads is a never-ending journey. That's why they can sustain success even when stars go down.

Ask the Giants in 1990, when Phil Simms went down in Week 15 while enjoying his best season. They switched over to Jeff Hostetler and ended up winning the Super Bowl. That's great preparation, great contingency planning and great coaching.

Of course none of this matters because the league has a hard on to "promote" star players who are mostly QBs and so I don't expect this trend to stop.

I want someone to explain to me how a Defensive End going at full speed and successfully slamming into a QB is supposed to contort his body mid-air so as to not "fall with his full weight on the QB".

I swear, the idiots making these rules have never played a down of organized Football.

This is the correct opinion. Quarterbacks should still get punished but there has to be a limit to it. Currently, they aren't getting punished for poor play

Sounds like you are a prime candidate for Macction

For every one of those amazing QBs who get their shot, there are a dozen Trevor Siemans and Ian Books. Sorry Saints fans, but I just randomly remembered the one game Ian Book started against Miami and he was hyped up the entire time only to look terrible

All things considered, I am starting to see that Purdy does perhaps have some limitations that he'll have to make up for as his career progresses.
Almost every quarterback has limitations. They can't all be Drew Brees.

To be fair to Book, we were missing like most of our coaching staff and half the freaking team the one time he got to start. We had guys getting fitted for jerseys in the locker room. That game should have been cancelled with how many sick and injured players and coaches we had.

Even that is kinda ridiculous with NTs like Vita Vea. Fat boy can't slow down that quickly.

If your hands aren't up it shouldn't be RTP.
True, but if I feel like a line had to be drawn balancing the NFL's interests and the defense's ability to play the game. The 2 step rule would be that perfect balance. But QB's now play flag football while everyone else plays regular football.

Thank LT for ending Theismann's career. Now every QB is just a blouse away from brunch.

Wasn't really singling him out so much as pointing out the idea that a back up QB stepping up and becoming amazing isn't that common. Its much much more common to see a back up come in and struggle. Just happened to remember that game

The abhorrent usage of the word "narrative" by both athletes and the talking heads on TV is especially infuriating.

While I feel for Theismann, that's not the reason the modernrules favor QB's.

It's all about money. QB jersey sales and popularity is way more then any other person. People love high scoring games, not defensive ones. Thats why the Rams/Chiefs 100 point game a few years back is considered one of the best, and the Rams/Patriots 15 point Superbowl in the same season boring as fuck.

I prefer defense too. I love seeing big stops. But most prefer high-scoring games. Its also better for bookies and casual fans.

I hate it, but it is what it is. Although the league DEFINITLEY needs to stop some of the bullshit flags. Some QB's can get breathed on and some poor linebacker will get a RTP call.

I learned something interesting today. The Eagles OL coach brought in a Rugby Union coach to help with the push.

Pretty happy that Bill Belichick got a contract extension. It was something of a foregone conclusion as otherwise he would have gone into next season as a lame duck HC and that rarely happens, but still.

People at like Tom Brady just magically became Tom Brady and that Belichick had nothing to do with it.

Belichick deserves a chance to beat Shula’s record and also a chance to build the Patriots into a contender.

Fuck Jordan Love

I knew it'd be bad but this shit is unwatchable.
One score game, apparently with a fully healthy Aaron Jones and they still try to sling it at every opportunity. Maybe someone should have a quiet word with LaFleur about the fact that his O-line is about as makeshift as it gets, and hey, let's not make our young QB run for his life every other play.

I feel LaFleur, much like the Packers fanbase, has just gotten too used to having an Elite QB, and can't/won't adjust not that they don't have someone at that level at QB.

That they might lose to the fucking Vikings is just hilarious. Least it's not the Bears, but the schadenfreude from watching Packers fans slowly accept that their team is Bad is still great.

If Kirk's injury is serious then the Packers get the last laugh. We've got great receivers and JJ returns in a couple of weeks, but without a good QB it really is fucking over. I feel bad for the Packers though, it's a sinking ship and everyone looks bad.
