The Official Simpsons Griefing Thread

I read that the writers got the inspiration for Comic Book Guy from early Usenet Simpsons discussions by nerdy people like him. Supposedly even the phrase "worst episode ever" came from there.

Wouldn't surprise me, a lot of cartoons of that era did similar stuff. Didn't the Animaniacs have a weirdo obsessive fanboy character based off a real life weirdo that stalked a voice actress?

I'd characterize the new animation (and art direction by extension) as sterile, while the old one, while a bit cruder, is more fluid and has a sense of life.

Never forget.

one of the animators (his name's dane romley and i just found out they're still working for the show as of season 31) who worked on the garbage hd intro made a now 10 year old journal post on deviantart talking about the scenes they did - fox explicitly asked him to turn in the shittiest head turning animation possible because they wanted people to focus on the funny wacky evil baby joke they added to the new intro.

even shmorky hated it..

I forgot to bring this up earlier, but another thing I dislike about the new HD intro is the animation's wonky timing (not sure if that's the proper term for it.) In addition to there being too many blink-and-you'll-miss-it gags crammed in and the animation generally being lifeless and stiff, it seems that it gets too fast-paced at times. It gives me visual whiplash.

Rhythm. One of my favourite youtube videos is Every frame a pause's video "Jackie Chan - how to do action comedy" in it they clip some of the commentary track from Project A and it perfectly encapsulates why i don't like his Hollywood work.
the audience don't know the rhythm's there, until it's not there, and then they realise there's something wrong with the scene
I think you're getting the same type of feeling. Back in the golden era many of the jokes had a flow to them and the animation expanded to capture it, whereas jokes are now just references and the animation reflects that.

I found this guy who's kinda annoying and doesn't do a very deep dive on the animation, but does show how it's changed over the years. At 11.30 where a s30 clip is compared to s1 clip a pretty good at showing the "evolution" of simpsons animation.
Timestamped to when he starts talking about animation.

Fuck, there's a name I haven't heard from in months. Not a particularly good artist but could be worse, I guess. As for the video's content, he's not wrong- There seems to be some effort going on, yet it all looks half assed at the same time. Like you can tell they wanted to be more ambitious than say, a Seth MacFarlane show visually, but everything seems to hold them back from doing better. From the constraints of whatever time/budget they're working with, to the abysmal execution of the writing. And the color palette isn't helping its case in the long run.

And the timing of the movements themselves makes me wonder if there's even any timing directors on the show itself these days. Like it's not hard to adjust inbetween frames to make movements pop more. They certainly did it in the older seasons.
