The Official Tomb Raider Grieving Thread - Including the sad, pathetic 2010s trilogy.

Do we really need a new reboot?

  • Yeah, I think it's about that time

  • No, the franchise is dead.

  • NO, A FOLLOWUP WHERE LARA PREACHES BOUT SLAY QUEEN DEFEATING EVIL ORANGE MAN

  • who cares, square enix killed another franchise

Where is the new game? Feels like over a year ago they leaked out an open world thing with lara's motorcycle. Been dead quiet since then.
Something like the old ducktails game where you just hang out around the mansion and then pick a location to go raid for artifacts without much of an overarching plot....

Would be really fun and amazing.

The TR store is oddly active and very fashion-based. I'm such a fucking simp for that turqoise/brown palette of OG Lara.

This model looks underage and/or like all those aussie actors they barred from porn cause they looked underage.

And now even real companies are selling Switch handles? Nuts how that console is only made playable by third parties.

There's a hinted possibility that the developers of the remasters might get to make new classic-inspired adventures of Lara Croft after the IV-VI Remasters come out.

I don't understand why some of you are horrified at this information. The remaster devs, Aspyr, are pretty faithful to the ethos of the classics and giving them a chance to make new Tomb Raider content in the classic style would be a good idea.

I'm so excited to see a polished Chronicles and Angel of Darkness. Those games didn't get enough time in the oven, back then.

A much better option than modern day Crystal Dynamics and the French faggots at Eidos Montreal.

Critical Drinker weighs in.
I wonder what the number one griftoid has to say. Will he claim it's as great and 'non-woke' as GOWR, which Sweet Baby consulted on?

Nah, looks like he didn't get paid to pretend it's good.

Because, sadly, devs don't have the last word. I will stay cautiously pessimistic, and if it's on par with TRR 1-3 (which saw some censorship), then I will be pleasantly surprised. The fact that they had to slap that warning in front of the remake is a bad omen.

Interesting quote I found about Tomb Raider and Eidos from George Broussard, circa October 19, 1998:

I think Eidos is screwing up by changing Lara. You can't try to please everyone and in the end they will have such a watered down politically correct action hero, nobody will care. You shouldn't change the one thing that made Lara popular. Her body.

With how female characters are in video games NOW, he predicted the future.

I don't think it was just her body. Tits got 13 year old boys in the door. Great creative puzzles and platforming with a whizz bang character design and personality kept them hooked for over twenty years.

I'm looking at Lara Croft from Tomb Raider 1-3.

I don't see a noticeable different in her character design between the original trilogy. I did hear that the original team was not involved in III's development onward.

This is more Tomb Raider than the latest anime.

The modern TR media hasn't been "TR"; it has been survivor saga based. We haven't seen actual media trying to depict the OG TR vibes since.. some comics?

Either way: The TR 4-6 remaster is a few days away. Sadly I blew all my gas on TR1 and the guns-only limited-saves run, so I lost interest in TR2. I still really want to 100% both games, so hopefully I'll get to it.

I actually played a bit of the 2013 game a few years back on my first gaming PC. I think it was just called Tomb Raider. It was ok but nothing special. It pops into my mind a lot especially all these games released over the last few years with females in them that have clearly been made to be intentionally unattractive, and some people consider this to be a realistic depiction of women in games. IMO the Lara Croft from the 2013 game was more an example of that. She wasn't nearly as ugly as the current representation of females in games. While not 100% realistic because it's a game the character design wasn't that bad. She wasn't overly sexualized.

The Laura Croft character design from the 2013 game should be an example used when they want to create more realistic and less sexualized female characters.

I have the second game I just haven't installed it and played it. I bought them during a Steam sale for a cheap price.

TODAY'S THE DAY, BABY!

I spent so long playing the TR1 remaster guns-only limited saves that I was gassed out for TR2 when I could finally (at least) freely save. I need to get back into it. The games really hit that vibe of being rewarding cause they're old iconic games, but also modern graphics and quality of life changes that don't make it fucking miserable. The movement system is iconic and perfect; quite literally acrobatics at its most simple. "That gap is 2 map editor blocks long; do this kind of jump. You will succeed 100%". The worst case of movement fuckery in TR1 was "Oooh, this jump is one and A HALF blocks long!", requiring a jump that doesn't start at the edge. Holy difficulty!

Whatever can be said for modern TR, they're decent. They're modern slop the way modern Ass Creed is a sloppy version of past, good AC. TR still gets movies, still gets media, still gets games. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is still being used for graphics benchmarks. There are worse franchises out there to be ruthlessly loyal to. AC haters still play and talk about AC. I think I've started to realize that we won't be getting any new long-lasting IPs from this point onward. A new TES won't drop. We got what we got, and I'm fine hitting the grave only trying out new entries, shit or not, of the same franchises I already know.

That aside: Aspyr followed up the TR1-3 remaster with a ton of fixes and new features. Changing things that looked out of place etc. Seeing as EA won't even fix the re-released Sims 1/2 to the point it can actually fucking launch? And work? Should underline that Aspyr is doing people a favor with TR. I will be playing the rest of the game 100% at some point and even the platinum seems feasible without being a pushover or absolutely brutal. I personally am feasting.

Also, it's hilarious how every single Lara thread on /v/ still hits 3 digit replies and people reminiscence about the past games. I haven't even seen proper Lara horse posting in those threads, it's as if the IP is niche enough that it only appeals to those who played it but not enough that outrage tourists pop their heads in to shit it up. Lara is life.

Just got to Egypt. The controls take getting used to but also fuck that one jump in the beginning of St Francis's folly. Also I'm not good with the flips and shit (unlike Legend) but it does get tough because Lara doesn't really have great lock on (yes I know its 1996).

Considering the AoD reveal, dare I ask what made the controls so bad? Its the first thing almost anyone mentions when the title is brought up. What did you have to hold down O and tilt the right stick to run or something?
Controls take some getting used to in the originals, but once you understand the principle, it's not all that bad. Thing is, the entire game is made of blocks, and when you recognize that you know which jumps you can make and which not, and they're all the types of jumps you learn in the tutorial.
AoD was in that kind of in-between period where they didn't quite know how to evolve the controls. They're just odd, neither classic nor modern feeling. Hard to describe. And yeah, not running by default made the game feel a lot more sluggish, which was not helped by the fact that they tried to add RPG-lite mechanics to make the game more realistic, which limited your athletic abilities quite a bit, especially in the beginning.

Yeah I noticed in a review that Lara has a stamina bar in AoD thats a source of contention.

Yeah. It was a jarring change for sure. An interesting experiment, but definitely didn't deliver what TR fans wanted back then. There's a reason they went back to the old style immediately.

Another thing they're saying is that she has some kind of hidden skill thing like by doing stealth or moving boxes?

My first impressions of the Tomb Raider 4-6 Remasters are an overall positive but with some complaints.

Last Revelation (4) is the shining star here, there was the most effort put into making it look great. However, they could have refined the rope swinging mechanic. It just takes a lot of patience and I recommend Stella's guide to rope swing properly. There's a few new animations, like dropping off a ledge or sliding down a slope. The color changes to some puzzles and interaction icons are most welcome. However, some areas of 4 are way too dark in updated graphics, but I guess that's why we have glow sticks.

Chronicles (5) was a mediocre game even before it was remastered. Even with the graphical overhaul, you can tell the original devs were serious when they said years later that they didn't even want to make it. Lots of uninspired areas and weird design choices that come from being rushed and an unenthusiastic original development team. There is... Some fun and intrigue to be gleamed from 5, but it just doesn't scratch my itch. At least Saber patched the glitch that happens in the last section of the game.

Angel Of Darkness (6) is satisfactory. Switch to modern controls for it though and swap the layout to what you'd prefer. The game doesn't tell you this (or I wasn't listening), but if you want to grab a ledge when you jump, you have to press SECONDARY action and not the primary. The graphical upgrade isn't as as impressive as I thought it would be, but the added clarity is good. Some of the character models are unchanged, but most of them are. Lara talks more to herself and gives you hints more than the original game. New additions like dual pistols, stealth mode, and restored cut content are welcome. AoD is actually playable and enjoyable now. There is still a little jank, but it is a decent experience.
