My takeaway from the original movie's message is that while Candyman had good reason to be angry and he's painted as sympathetic throughout most of the movie, by the end it's ultimately revealed that he's let his resentment make him a literal monster and is more interested in self perpetuating this resentment than actually finding peace.
Very relevant message to today's world as that's essentially what's going on with the BLM type mindset, resentment is making them into a monster that does more harm than good.
The original has a very nuanced messaged about race and class that you can find and talk about, or ignore, since it is so well integrated that it blends seamlessly with the production. It also addresses, as you noted, the issues with resentment and self-perpetuating violence. It also is a great dissection of the power of belief and the structure it can give to people and communities.
On top of that, the directing and cinematography are top shelf, the acting and writing are stellar, and it may have the best composed horror soundtrack ever.
The original isn't just a good horror movie, it is a good film, period.
