The Outer Worlds 2 (discuss the first one here as well)

I don't get this almost historical revisionism people are doing of the game. The claim it was written by redditors for redditors rings true because even at it's best, the writing is awful. Early game scenes like "closest living relative" and a guy giving corporate slogans even as he dies could have been good if heavy handed scenes in a better game, but that's the peak of the writing. The rest is shit like a woman talking about how she's a-sexual or the space ship giving preferred pronouns. Not to mention all the women having the same politically-correct-unattractive appearance.
I'm not trying to revise anything, I just didn't have a problem with the cartoonishness, and I actually don't remember the asexual lady or the ship pronouns. I don't doubt they were there, mind you, it's just the only individual piece of writing I actually remember from the game is this:
If OW was any other game by any other studio, I don't think people would be nearly as kind to it. It reminds me a lot of Disco Eliseum where 98% of the possitive feedback it gets is simply because the game agrees with them politically, and nothing the game actually does.
It's not a matter of the studio for me, I just took the game at face value after the NV2 facade fell away. If anything I think the game being made by Obsidian would invite greater criticism seeing as Obsidian made NV and Pillars of Eternity.

Chat, did anyone feel like they wanted to replay the outer worlds, if you did play it? I have felt zero desire to replay it. I feel like that is very very bad for an RPG.
I never finished the game. I started over and ended up being bored when I reached Byzantium.

I replay it rather regularly, actually. It is short and has lots of build variety, in that sense it is a lot like Fallout 1. You can run thru it in a weekend, maybe a week if you decide to 100% it with DLC, and then you're off to play something else or replay it with a different build. This is the kind of game it is.

Outer Worlds felt like an early access game.

The environments, character models, voice acting, all that shit was there but everything else was so bare bones and empty.

It had like only 10 weapons, five enemy types ect. It got repetitive and boring very very quickly.

It was incompetence, Tim had to constantly make cuts and concessions since his team was retarded and didn't know what they were doing. Open world was cut, writing was redditor-ized, so on and so forth until we get the final game. Hopefully Tim learned his lesson and put his foot down on what he wants to see from Outer Worlds 2, that includes hiring more competent devs or at least whipping them into shape. It's taking them long enough, so I hope this time it's for a good reason.

I don't normally like PatritionTV, but his OW video was good iirc. There was a bunch of good multi-hour long deep dives on it. Better than the game tbh.

I say that because he mentions one of the areas (Roseway? The one where you do the diet toothpaste quest.) was the first area made as a test bed for various, and it shows some unique elements that don't appear in the rest of the game. Like options for quest outcomes instead of corpo, worker, or correct compromise. Key among them is the writing, while satirical, is more serious and less reddit. Making it seem that the reddit tier writing was a late addition to the game.

I doubt it. While he has some interesting commentary. My understanding is he's woke AF and thus would likely still hire based on diversity. He also sold out to epic and microsoft first go around, so he'd immediately cave the second any ESG money was waved at him. I don't think there's much, if any ESG money left, but still...

Huh. I might have to give it another shot then. Steam says I have 5 hours in it, but I reached Groundbreaker I think? I wonder if it's worth putting on easy and focusing the main quest.

When I first played OW, I didn't mind it at the time because I was still under the impression the developers still knew what they were doing and how to put together a cohesive storyline. But the more I got through the story, the more it felt like such a slog and wanted it to be over with.

Not to mention it's probably one of the ugliest games I've ever played. Monarch gave me a headache every time I tried to play through that because everything was so washed out and gross looking. Which is the aesthetic they were going for...I guess, but I'd assume they wouldn't want the players to feel physically ill while playing.

Then there was how ugly some of the characters looked. The main one that springs to mind is the mayor or whatever he was in Monarch who was trying to gain favor with the galactic government. Wtf was up with that pajeets facial hair? On there's the obvious dyke hairstyle for the redhead companion and the black girl companion was just...hideous.

I won't even get into the actual gameplay because this post is long enough. Overall, I'm curious how the sequel will turn out but if it's anything like Avowed is, I have zero hopes for it.

I disagree, his video is garbage and one of the few I don't like. Salt Factory made one that is more in-depth and actually addresses the core issues the game has.

Correct, at one point the vertical slice was changed to Emerald Vale, and writing was completely different. I recall the reason being was that the original atmosphere was too "depressing", so they added "humor" to almost every conversation and bit of dialogue of the game. Obsidian did the same thing with Old World Blues DLC but at least there it thematically made sense. The worst offender is the space pirate quest, you ever wonder why towards the end the grounded, ruthless, cold and calculating boss goes full conspiratard about aliens? The redditor QA team didn't like playing as the "bad guys" so the devs made her quirky and relatable, making the impact of what was otherwise one of the best questlines in the game(and one that actually connects to the main plot line) be that of a wet pillow. We can't have bad guys winning unless they're stereotypical mustache twirling villains so you are given a reason to work with the reasonable glowie scientists instead. Let's be vague about what they're doing while we're at it so we don't make anyone feel uncomfortable, just trust the science, okay? We also can't have actual effective bandits you can side with, they have to be QUIRKY and HILARIOUS so that the players can laugh and forget they're working for the bad guys! Look at this, Lilya is now going to buy a golden toilet to shit in, nowthat the she hijacked a monstrous government experimental program to sell on the black market and make billions of bits, so funny! Almost makes you forget that you could be responsible for some quack using these notes and equipment to experiment on god knows how many people in the future thanks to you, it's not like you already have one rogue scientist doing god knows what that you're supposed to side with in the main quest!
In the words of Doctor 0 from Old World Blues, since I already mentioned it "Vivisect me, please". Thankfully, the writing for the DLCs seemed much better, especially in Peril on Gorgon, altho the "silliness" remains(The assassins that are send after you at one point are corporate football players that got fired, so now they all became bounty hunters that run at you with tossball sticks. Isn't that HILARIOUS?)

Tim made several videos specifically calling out his employees as incompetent retards, as a warning to other leads to tard wrangle theirs better. I dunno if he is "woke", but he is an oldschool liberal, ie "I want to make a good, nuanced product first and shove my politics in second". It's clear the final product isn't anywhere close to what he wanted, so I hope this resentment is enough to drive him to fix the mistakes of the first game.

Emerald Vale and Groundbreaker are glorified tutorial levels. Once you leave Groundbreaker is when the game really picks off. If you have DLCs, once you get to a certain point in the main quest they trigger as well. You can't sequence break and head to one of the high level DLC areas right off the bat like in Fallout games, I'm afraid, but they're easily the best content the game has. Worth at least one playthrough, Peril on Gorgon specifically plays a lot like Old World Blues with the humour turned off so you can see how fucked up the entire corporate setting and the experimentation they do is at face value. The "humour" is at minimum in this DLC, I have a feeling this is a lot like what Tim originally envisioned the game as.

This is one of the more common complaints: Places where you spend the most amount of time(Monarch and Emerald Vale) are ugly as sin and boring to look at. This, I think, is the biggest filter for most players, especially since Emerald Vale is a mandatory tutorial level and can easily take you 2-3 hours. I would not blame you if you think the game isn't worth your time and quit right there.
As for ugly NPCs, I can actually look past that. The game takes place in an industrial setting, long hair and beauty products aren't allowed for the working class. In fact, hygiene products like shampoo are straight up banned outside Byzantium and can get you thrown in prison just for owning or using them. I can actually accept many NPCs being ugly, neon hair included since most of them that look like this are either security or outlaws. I guess you can cope that this is the fashion in Halcyon for the spacer or bouncer. Doesn't bother me since not like anything else looks better in the entire solar system. At least the DLCs add in some color outside the hair spray the NPCs use.

This is the opposite to everything I heard prior, with the claim that the first area of the game is front loaded with all the best content, and thus the game falls off considerably once you reach groundbreaker.

I can't. Especially given how ideological the rest of the game is. When there's quests around setting up an a-sexual lesbian date, they burned the benefit of the doubt.

What they mean is that Monarch is a drag that lasts at least twice as long as it needs to, and they're right. Emerald Vale isn't much better, but at least it gives you a small open world to try out your build and get a few side quests done, as well as a companion. It's a microcosm of the entire rest of the game.

Parvati's quest is the worst in the game not just because it revolves around a lesbian date, but because it is just a multi-stage fetch quest that can take you half the game to complete. It is garbage, ignore it.

was something I had previously only witnessed a "reputable" developer resort to with Sonic Adventure.

You should check out cyberpunk. The first act of the game is literally a completely seperate game that has more or less absolutely fucking nothing to do with the remaining 2 acts.

Literally the badly drawn horse meme.

Unironically straight up false advertising, they ensured reviewers would only play the good part worth praising before the game turns into abyssal dogshit.

I'm pretty sure not even the most hardcore cyberpunk fan will deny this.

What did Sonic Adventure do?

Trick people into buying a Sonic the Hedgehog game which was only about 17% Sonic the Hedgehog, before blindsiding players by forcing them to work through a protracted fishing simulator as a morbidly obese, mentally retarded cat voiced by Duke Nukem, who lumbered as though experiencing severe hemorrhoidal inflammation, and may or may not be in a homosexual relationship with a frog.

You should check out cyberpunk.

Nah; I'm good. What window we had into its development hell made it obvious what Cyberpunk was going to be; and that the storm of cope would be so immense that I was better off avoiding the game altogether until years afterward, when the Polacks might have managed to pull a No Man's Sky in attempting to restore their reputation (to my pedestrian knowledge, they never succeeded in doing so).

If I'm someday confined to bed or serving a lengthy prison sentence in a Scandinavian country, I might play Cyberpunk just to say that I did. But I imagine there are more fun things to do while infirm or incarcerated.

the first game was so fucking bad i could not push my self to play it for more than 4 hours,
i tried twice and could only get a few hours past the first planet

i remember finding a settlement and the first person i talked to flat out told me they were anarchists. like zero nuance or storytelling,
like i feel the political compass has totally destroyed anyone's ability to write anything interesting about political structure
