The Philadelphia Zoo Has a Drag Queen Problem - "There are Trump people that come to the zoo," explains one zoo employee.

On Tuesdays, the Philadelphia Zoo presents “Story Time Tuesdays: Animal Tales.” A special guest reads a book about animals to kids. And a zookeeper brings along one of the zoo’s animals to show to the tots. It’s a lovely affair. On June 3rd, to kick off Pride Month, the Philadelphia Zoo was set to partner with local non-profit Philadelphia Family Pride, and the group engaged drag queen Christina Bangz to read to the children. Well, that was the plan anyway.

According to Philadelphia Family Pride spokesperson Michael Galvan, the Philadelphia Zoo’s director of school and community partnerships, Bethany Housman, reached out to the organization on Friday to set up an urgent phone call before the holiday weekend. And on that call, says Galvan, Housman pulled the plug on any drag queen involvement with the event.
“She was apologetic and said she wished she were calling with better news,” says Galvan, the person who had set the event up with Housman in the first place. “But she said that ‘senior leadership’ had requested that we continue the event without a drag queen story hour. She said specifically that her leadership was ‘concerned they could not guarantee the safety and security’ of our drag artist.”

It didn’t take Galvan long to decide that if there would be no drag queen, there would be no Philadelphia Family Pride involvement with the zoo.

“I appreciate concerns about safety,” says Galvan. “But if they can’t keep one drag queen safe, then I don’t feel comfortable having queer families in that space. Additionally, in this ‘modern era’, drag artists are being vilified and attacked. We need to stand in solidarity.”

Housman and a Philadelphia Zoo spokesperson did not return messages seeking comment. But one Philadelphia Zoo employee, who is queer, had this to say about the cancelation, which they were unaware of until I told them about it: “There are Trump people that come to the zoo. Our public safety department can’t respond immediately, because there’s only a few patrolling staff. It could take three-plus minutes to respond.” (I agreed not to name the employee, since they are not authorized to speak to the press.)

Sure, I get that. But also, this feels a little bit like the town outside of Philly that just canceled its longstanding Fourth of July parade because terrorists might attack it. And if the Philadelphia Zoo is committed to being an ally of the LGBTQ community, maybe hire a bodyguard for the one hour that the drag queen would have been on the premises, assuming that safety concerns are really at the center of this decision. I’m not certain that they are.

Drag used to be men doing grown men shit. Like smoking rock and throwing bricks at NY police. The biggest gaff in my lifetime has been them accepting children in what has historically been a mature event. If they had shut it down hard at the onset of drag queen story hours, they'd be more respected by the general populace even among people that didn't like or agree with their lifestyles.

You can never let chomos steal your banner or use your identity. They fuck it up for everyone.

Seems to me that senior leadership caught wind of this and told the cunt hell no, and "safety concerns" are just the reason given to the press to spin this into being about violent threats from evil, evil Trump supporters.

Would it not be possible for a local notable gay or lesbian wearing normal clothes whose adopted surname is not “Bangz” to read to the children? And to read something that isn’t about trooning out? I realize the answer is no.
But you see that would not advance the mental assault. It is all about pushing things farther and making people swallow the insanity.

Keeping the drag artist "safe" hilarious.

The fact that they are saying this shows that they are aware that the general public have firmly started to reject this enforced alphabet mafia bullshit.
Moreover, outside of a handful of huge zoos, most are just depressing to go to. Unmaintained grounds, animals with no enrichment, it's like going to an animal psych ward.

The Philadelphia Zoo used to be like that years ago - maybe back in the 70s.
If we absolutely must have perverts at the zoo it should at least be furries to stay on theme.
They'd try to fuck the animals, though. If you tried to feed them to the tigers, the poor animals might catch an undiscovered illness.

Last time I went to a zoo, it was the Toronto zoo like 20 years ago. It was SUPPOSED to be one of the better ones, but every animal I saw looked like it wanted to kill itself, and probably would have if it had the means. Maybe that's why troons want to do their drag queer story hour there? Surrounded by things that want to neck themselves, the tranny must figure it's in like-minded company.

The Philadelphia Zoo used to have this thing called the Tree House where you were given a plastic ring with a peg on it upon entering. You stuck this peg into a machine and it would read you animal facts. I remember thinking it was some kind of magic. That's the closest I can recall to anything story hour like. I haven't been there in over 20 years.
> the Philadelphia Zoo promoted pegging to kids

Unacceptable.

I don’t understand why ANYone has to be LGBTQIA++ or non white to be platformed

Why can’t we have like attractive smart people who are good at things being platformed?

Cosmo profiled Renee Rapp this month. Conventionally pretty white woman who’d have had a bigger career in the 50s-aughts than she does now. She’s got a much better face than Sydney Sweeney for example.

The pull quotes from the article are all like “straight people don’t even exist to me!” Even like, to profile a good looking blonde actress in a women’s mag - which will mostly be read by middle of the road straights- it has to be ‘queer’ or queerbaiting

Could we have nice moms reading to kids and like attractive normalish people in media again? Why are they trying to tell us all these people who look like they got hit with an ugly stick & have a weird fetish they foist on others are so admirable?

Could we get like mom types doing story time? Those nice girl types who were the prettiest best babysitter in town when they were in HS? Why on earth would it be a gay man with a fetish? How is that the first, best choice? Why does EVERYTHING have to be about gays right now? So fucking strange

And I mean: I worked at a theatre at one point. If gay men are in their theatre space being theatre-y fine. Most of them don’t *want* to read to kids while wearing a dress, it’s not their thing that’s why they didn’t marry a chick and father children like even most gays did for millennia. But who are these people who just keep trying to access kids this way? And why is every gatekeeper platforming them not normies?
