The Polyglot Community / Conlangers / General Language Learning Autism - Attention seekers that barely speak the languages they claim, pretentious language creators, grifters shilling language learning scams and more!

I remember watching a video of a guy that went on a live show claiming he could speak 20 languages or something, and they exposed him for being a fraud by inviting like 10 native speakers from around the world. I can't for the life of me find it, but I'm almost certain it was in spanish.

Yeah, I am trying to find a video about Laoshu that I found from some Japanese guy exposing him for his bad Japanese grammar, but I also can't for the life of me find it. I do wonder if it got deleted since there is that thing where you shouldn't speak ill of the dead. If only I knew how big of a rabbithole this was, then I would have saved it.

I think you're referring to Ziad Fazah (wiki).

In 1997, Fazah's polyglot abilities were tested in the Chilean TV program Viva el lunes. The program was in Spanish and ambassadors and other guests from all over the world asked him questions in Egyptian Arabic, Finnish, Russian, Chinese, Persian, Hindi and Greek. He failed in fully understanding and properly answering all of them but the first in his native Arabic.

[...] Besides failing to understand the question or any of the spoken Persian, Fazah also failed the reading test in Persian he was given, as he pronounced the letters as one would in Arabic, which is inaccurate since the Persian alphabet is unique with additional letters not found in Arabic. Previously Fazah had claimed he could read in all the languages he claimed to speak. Persian was the only language he was tested in reading, and considering his poor performance, it is unlikely he would have passed either the Greek, Chinese, Hindi Devanagari script, or Cyrillic alphabet reading comprehension.

In a 2015 interview, Fazah defended himself regarding this event, which he called a "trap". He claimed that the show's organizers did not inform him he would be tested and even that it would be conducted in languages other than Spanish, so he did not have time to prepare himself to properly answer the questions.

I managed to have time to archive that video earlier than expected. I need to continue to work on the section on Sam/Exposing Polyglot Scammers section more. I have also decided maybe I will also give an explanation of the CEFRL assessment since you do see a lot of people in the language learning community throw that around and like listing their scores a lot and it might be a good thing to explain in the OP for people who don't know.

edit: I noticed a lot of youtube videos in my recommends that feature "Learn Japanese by sleeping" which I might also include

Interesting the Chilean video.
Sometimes the channels made that type of videos to show something specific but subtle. And i'm living enough in this country to know how they manipulated the data for so long.
@Fialovy i can probably translate one of those videos if i have the time.

Ok, let me see writing a script:
  • Diana Bolocco (yes, i know who's she): A little presentation to Ziam & "Now we're gonna ask some foreigner residents in Chile and Sami gonna ask a question to Ziam".
  • Sami Salem: I don't know Egyptian but i'm sure he's asking something related to living in Chile.
  • Diana Bolocco: "Before, explain to us what he asked to you"
  • Ziam: "He asked how much i'm living in Chile" and i don't know what the fuck is rambling in this part.
  • Sami: Again, i don't know Egyptian.
  • Ziam: Probably using Egyptian, but i don't know.
  • A nice racist joke for part of the program: "Where you parked the camel?" (Lol).
  • Sami: "The country is nice and friendly"
  • Auli: Asking something in Finland, which i don't know yet.
  • Ziam: "She told me about the language Finland" and again, more non-sense ramblings. Nice.
  • Alvaro Salas (hah, i remember the name of that fuck too): "Now ask something in Finland" (to Zaim). "Now i want to see you" (lol).
  • Ziam: Asking about something in Finland related to the capital.
  • Auli: "We're lost enough, 'cus i ask about 5 millions of Finland speakers like us and Sweden which is indigenous language and i want to know what's better for Finland" (Hah, yep; this is the part when the polyglot is failling)
  • Alvaro: "And what he's asking?"
  • Auli: "He answered about learning Finland for 3 months and in the capital nobody helping us to comprend the language. He doesn't understand the topic i asked, but i understand what he's trying to say"
  • Alvaro: He's presenting the Pakistani guy.
  • Abdulah: Starts with a joke. Funny. "He (Ziam) learned 58 languages. I'm gonna give him a text. It's a hymn of my country."
  • I'm sure is Persian text, but i can be wrong.
  • Ziam: Reciting the Persian text.
  • Abdulah: "He knows the arabian alphabet, not the Persian one. He talked like 5% of the actual hymn" (lol). Talks in Persian.
  • Ziam: "He's talking about how Persian is different with their own alphabets" and shit like that.
  • Abdulah: "I don't asked that. I asked if he knows about the superficial level of Persian (Farsi) or learned the roots of the language. Example about how Persian poets he knows.
  • Salas: "How much you're living in this country?"
  • Abdulah: "33 years"
  • Salas: "If i speak to you quickly you gonna understand?"
  • Abdulah: "Heh".
  • Salas: "If he studies 2 months or 3 months..."
  • Abdulah: "Not natural" (Lol).
  • Dianna Bolocco is presenting a ex-Soviet (Russian) Olympic coach and coach (now ex, obvious reasons of time) of the soccer team Universidad Católica. "Ask something simple in Russian, not dialects this time"
  • Stanislav: "I'm gonna ask something short" Asks in Russian:
  • Ziam: Repeats a Russian word, like "what"; i'm sure.
  • Diana: "What's the question to him" (to Stanislav)
  • Stanislav: "Just a moment"
  • Salas: Another joke, now with poop. Lol. This fucking presentator.
  • Iván Zamorano talks something about the caco word. Well, to explain to non-Spanish speakers, one of those Russian words sounds like Caca, which is poop in Spanish.
  • Ziam: "One more time" (reffering to repeat the question).
  • Satinslav repeats in a suprisingly single manner this time.
  • Ziam: "One thing, those idioms like Croat, he doesn't warning me of those languages here. If he warned me with anticipation those idioms, i could be prepared because since 20 years i don't practiced those" (wtf)
  • Coco Legrand, speaking in English with a joke in mind; but i assure you, he's Chilean.
  • Ziam answering.
  • Salas following the same joke with the name of the program, nothing special in this part.
  • Now he's talking about Chinese. Ziam is answering about having more knowledge than Persian.
  • Xu is featured. He's asking something in Cantonese.
  • Ziam is... answering in Cantonese i think.
  • Xu is following.
  • Ziam: "Where did he learn Cantonese" and shit like that. He's reffering to himself in the explanation.
  • Xu denied the explanation. "I asked about what human work from the Earth is seen in the moon" (of course, the Great Chinese Wall). "What's the length of the Great Chinese Wall"
  • Salas is presenting a Greek important person, Jrici.
  • She's asking something in Greek. "It's easy" (lol)
  • Ziam is rambling in Greek it seems. Said something about patience randomly. And finally: "One more time, please"
  • Jrici repeats the same question.
  • Salas explaining the Greek language is the most difficult as a joke.
  • Jrici explaining between the laughs about the same question Coco Legrand asked, and that's about: "How many days are you going to be in this country?". "Even was a repeated question"
  • Diana presenting a Indian guy, but Ziam simply rejects the conversation (ultra lol). Poor man.
  • Anyway, Nick is gonna answering a simple question in Hindu. Well, actually he said in Hindu the name of the program. Lol.
Ok, that's all. I done my work. This is ready to get in the OP.
Anything about translating Spanish to English, send me a PM.

Thank you so much, when you are done, I will put that transcript in a spoiler tag under that video and make sure to give you credit.

I also added an explanation for the CEFR assessment since you see that commonly referred to in those communities.

Right now I am doing some research on pseudoscience when it comes to language learning and will probably add some stuff on that topic.

Is there an English version of these guys? I'd love to see a Chinese guy's video about "ORDERING in English! They were SO impressed!" so I can understand what it's like without doing any work.
Yeah on 小红书 (Chinese social media app) there are many annoying influencers who give language advice about English but most of the time it is very unidomatic and differences in regional English is exaggerated to make content for a video

Awesome, added the transcript and I am currently expanding the scam and grifting section by adding some information on some of the pseudoscience as well as touching on the Esperanto community since they tend to perpetuate the myth that Esperanto can help you learn a language faster, which either the studies in question did not have really good controls that make it hard to replicate and also the one study that everyone brings up, the Springboard to Languages Study turns out is very flawed and the follow up with the kids that was done relatively recently reveals that it did nothing to help them learn a natural language like French faster, but of course, they don't talk about that.

I might also mention some of the drama in the conlanging community since it is a very common debate about who owns the rights to a language and people can be pretty autistic and protective over it especially if people use it and not use it perfectly and try to control the language from evolving in a way the direction don't want to.

I might have to change the title of the thread to broaden the scope of the thread because I think I should probably mention the conlanging community too and a lot of people have pointed out that broadening the scope of the thread could help with keeping this thread interesting.

What do you guys think? Should I expand this thread to include conlanging, language learning scams, and general autism on language learning reddits?

I have been seeing a lot on the language learning Reddit whether or not whether it is good or bad to learn Russian considering the current situation with the war and whatnot, like, seriously, there is a lot of people who don't think you should learn Russian because Putin = bad therefore the language he speaks = bad. I guess you shouldn't learn German either with that logic.

I say expand the scope of the thread as conlangs has the potential to have more autists.

The idea that you shouldn't learn Russian because of the war is exactly why you should learn Russian. Russia has always been a global power and the demand for people who know the language will always be there unlike something like Polish or Japanese. Of course, this just talking about working for the government or for people who want to learn a language to increase their job prospects. You should learn a language because you want to. Bet you these same people have no problem encouraging people to learn Arabic (Saudi Arabia) or Mandarin (China) despite those languages being spoken by bad people/countries

Very interesting in-progress OP. It’s always funny to be reminded (or even learn about) how crazy certain communities can get. I do think we have to watch out for scope creep: I really enjoyed the Esperanto section (conlang community is it’s own fascinating rabbit hole), but that might be a little too off-topic? Curious how bad the pseudoscience and grifting is in the other conlangs (loglan and the IP drama, Lojban as a more open-source successor, etc). The idea of conlangs being “well-designed” by proponents and somewhat utopian definitely means we’ll get some transhumanism (along with other trans) autism.

I always found languages/linguistics fascinating, but I know almost nothing substantial about the field. The conlang material might best be saved/spun-off into it’s own thread at a future date? Just thinking out loud.

Edit: @Shirō Ishii is kind of on the same page as me wanting to learn more about conlangs, but suggested the opposite of me and to expand those sections (lol). In any case, I think there’s a demand for conlang autism here (the entire rabbit hole can be funny, bizarre, and full-on informative/educational).

Okay, I added a section on conlangs which I will try to add more this week. I need to do some more research and try to dig for some content. I have heard of some of the drama, but I know there is more out there. There is probably a lot of bad language concepts as well.

Title has typo, should be language leaning learning

As an actual linguist, this is a good OP. One of the TAs in our department is actually doing her thesis on internet language communities, and I think she delves into just how scummy these people are.
Just please don't touch toki pona or based langtubers like Luke Raniri or jan Misali. Both are probably autistic but they get a pass.

You have a goldmine to use by expanding the thread into the scams that populate these communities.

There was a debacle in the Japanese learning community when one of the -already known to be shitty- most famous YouTubers who always focused on the dumbest shit launched a program where they claimed you would go from beginner to native in months at most. Check out the Matt vs Japan uproot scandal if you wanna know more.

Hell, I'd love to have a thread to dump SaitamaDrew shit :story:

Someone mentioned in the thread a ways back about the whole Matt vs Japan scandal. Could you tell me more about it? I will do my own research as well.

Matts vs Japan started a new course focused on a "secret technique to study Japanese", claiming it to be unknown for nearly everyone and that people won't be get good at Japanese until they use this technique only him and Ken Cannon knew.

It had all the marks of a scam, with the limited spots, short time to join the program, absurd promises... And all of this done by email.

Ken Cannon, his partner in crime, has been involved in multiple scandals regarding language scams going as far back as 2014 or so.

Bunch of Reddit threads talking about it

1) Threads start to appear regarding an email that Matt and Ken sent to people subscribed to something of theirs

2) Second thread is made after a bunch of initial ones are closed, is marked as the thread to go to talk about this subject

https://www.reddit.com/r/LearnJapan..._alert_a_warning_regarding_matt_vs_japan_and/

The OP of it is removed, but someone over at language learning took screencaps and is also discussed here

3) Tranny jannies obviously nuked posts earlier and so there was a massive uproar until (2) happened, so there was more drama here

4) A mod is removed from the subreddit due to conflict of interest and acting like a retard, given he had ties to Matt
