I have a proclivity for a certain kind of film focusing on a flawed anti-hero but I realized this kind of film doesn't really have a name. It runs the gamete of drama/crime/horror/thriller and psychological drama which I think is too broad a term. I think Psychodrama is more accurate especially because it's much more singular and befitting a character study on a flawed character.

I thought of the term psychodrama because that's how John K. described the Stimpy's Fan Club episode of Ren & Stimpy.

American Psycho
Joker
Taxi Driver
Combat Shock
King of Comedy
Owning Mahowny (I guess Philip Seymore Hoffman was the go-to guy for these kind of roles)
Leaving Las Vegas
Maniac (original and remake)
Angst
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas

Other examples in TV of course. A good one is the episode The Man Who Was Death from Tales From the Crypt.

I think the defining characteristics of this sub-genre has to be: a flawed main character, possibly disturbed or in a warped reality, we are with this character either the entire time or the majority of the time, and there has to be a level of wondering where this is heading if their path is one of self-destruction or salvation.

I'd say the film I Saw The Devil absolutely, 100% qualifies. It gets bonus points too for absolutely nailing it with their choice in actors and directing. A Tale of Two Sisters is a literal classic too, old as it is.

Some other maybe "lesser-known" titles off the top of my head:
The Red Shoes (the 2005 horror film)
Wishing Stairs
Strange Circus
Love Exposure
Suicide Club
, and its "prequel/sequel-mix film", Noriko's Dinner Table
Marebito

The Man Behind The Scissors
Ichi The Killer
MPD Psycho, not a film, but a 6-part TV series.
Tetsuo: The Iron Man is probably a more..."unique" example. For many reasons.

Tbh Asia was pumping out "psychodrama" films at an insane rate way back when. Not so much anymore.

I've seen some of those I disagree with Suicide Club but I guess Ichi The Killer counts even though we're not with Ichi or Kakihari the majority of the time.
