I have a proclivity for a certain kind of film focusing on a flawed anti-hero but I realized this kind of film doesn't really have a name. It runs the gamete of drama/crime/horror/thriller and psychological drama which I think is too broad a term. I think Psychodrama is more accurate especially because it's much more singular and befitting a character study on a flawed character.
I thought of the term psychodrama because that's how John K. described the Stimpy's Fan Club episode of Ren & Stimpy.
American Psycho
Joker
Taxi Driver
Combat Shock
King of Comedy
Owning Mahowny (I guess Philip Seymore Hoffman was the go-to guy for these kind of roles)
Leaving Las Vegas
Maniac (original and remake)
Angst
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas
Other examples in TV of course. A good one is the episode The Man Who Was Death from Tales From the Crypt.
I think the defining characteristics of this sub-genre has to be: a flawed main character, possibly disturbed or in a warped reality, we are with this character either the entire time or the majority of the time, and there has to be a level of wondering where this is heading if their path is one of self-destruction or salvation.
