The REAL Reason McDonalds Ice Cream Machines Are Always Broken

TL;DW : The reason McDonalds ice-cream machines are broken all the time is because the software, hardware and interface is intentionally too complex for the average McDonald employee or manager to fix so they have to call the company (Taylor) that makes the machine to send their own repairmen as part of their service contract to get it in working order. McDonalds head office doesn’t really care because they’re not paying for the repair, their franchisee are, and the franchisee contractually obligated to use the machines McDonald headquarters tell them to use and Taylor maintains a network of approved distributors that charge franchisees thousands of dollars a year for pricey maintenance contracts.

I have this memory which I'm not 100% sure is true or not...it could've just been a bad dream...but I remember going to nearly every McDonald's in town (including the ones in the mall and in Wal-Mart) with my mom after a dental visit a long time ago (this must have been like 1997), and all of them claimed the milkshake machine was broken. I know my mom never brought up the incident again when the question of McDonald's or their milkshakes came up, so I'm not sure if it's a "never speak of this again, pretend it never happened" incident or it's just a figment of my imagination.

Anyone have one of those local mcdonalds thats not only part playplace but part gas station

Why does an ice cream machine need software? When I worked at Del Taco, the shake machine just had a switch to flip and it was good after an hour. And taking the machine apart only took 5 minutes. The only way you weren't getting a shake was when the machine was apart or if the mix hadn't frozen yet.
It's the 2020s baby! Interface screens! Interface screens on EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE!

The only one that’s true and not desperate clickbait; it’s not broken, it’s down for cleaning. Ask anyone working there and they’ll tell you the same.
That's funny. I get accused of being a conspiracy theorist when I tell someone this. It's a big part of why I stopped talking to people and instead just scream at them and hit them.

I remember the last time this came up, and people called McDonalds racist for not fixing the ice cream machines in non-white areas. Here's the mystery solved:

Was going to come here to comment this. I've never had a problem with getting an ice cream at one of their locations in an Asian or White area. However, go to a primarily Black or Middle Eastern McDs? Shit out of luck

If I had a guess, it started out to compete with Wendy's and Dairy Queen and to get people to come to their store with having it on the menu. Except it became such a hassle the machine is "always broken." Now, it's just a meme, and no one goes to McDonalds for their ice cream.

we should've started asking ourselves over a decade ago why fucking john deere tractors and clothes dryers require a constant internet connection

I know of one that I used to visit in Houston but not anything locally. There was one that was part Playplace and part Blockbuster though
