Stepmania is amazing if you like DDR, but as general interest in DDR declines, the harder it gets to find pads to play on. If your pad starts to drop or double-up on steps, if you're not an electrician, be prepared to drop hundreds of dollars for a new one.

Guitar Hero/Rock Band has the same problem.

I wish rhythm games weren't treated by their developers as a passing fancy; there's clearly still a market for them.

It’s starting to get bigger from what I’ve seen. AX and otakon this year had lines for every taiko arcade cabinet and each was a fucking 30 minute wait to play two songs.

Taiko no Tatsujin was/ is really big in Japan, even among non-gamers. It's similar to DDR, or maybe Rock Band in the west, being the thing that comes to mind to any normal person if you bring up arcade games or rhythm games.

I'm very happy to read that, taiko is definitely something I'm hoping to see expand more in the west. Just the very nature of how doing well in a song actually adds a sort of separate drumline to the song is really unique as far as i know when it comes to rhythm games. There definitely needs to be a taiko "charting" community in the west.

Probably the closest anything Taiko esque came to popularity in the west was Donkey Konga. Even then, it probably wasn't that great of a representation of it.

I don't mean to necro the thread but Project DIVA: Mega Mix came out yesterday for the westerners and I've been really enjoying it as far as my rhythm game cravings go. Sure all the songs are from the Vocaloid community but I've been a fan since 2008. A lot of the song charts are from Future Tone but I think it was a great opportunity for Switch players or people that are interested in the music to get in. :)

Once upon a time back when it was pretty new I got a copy of the cdrom that DDR 4th Mix Plus ran off of.
I stuck it in my modded ps1 and it booted to a bios check looking for additional hardware.

Necro with the obligatory Friday Night Funkin post. I enjoy the game but it's nowhere near as good as games like RoBeats or Stepmania and Clone Hero. Newgrounds nostalgia and the artstyle is what won me over.
