Anyone here remember Sims Medieval? That one very short-lived spinoff that had a really interesting idea behind it, but barely sold and was soon forgotten? In case you've never played it, it's a 2011 Sims 3 spinoff set in a medieval fantasy setting that keeps the core dollhouse gameplay of the series while adding RPG elements and special roles and professions for some characters in town like blacksmiths, healers and wizards. On top of that, it was probably the most adult Sims game out of all, with alcohol being called by its name and not replaced by euphemisms, women being able to breastfeed, characters having sword duels, and the ability to execute any random person as a king if you wanted to. Not to mention, it had a beautiful artstyle and some of the best character models and designs in Sims. I've been thinking of it recently for no particular reason, and I keep wondering why didn't it do so well. While the idea of combining life sim and role playing game was really fun , the main problem of the game was, in my opinion, that there was hardly any influence and progress on the surroundings, and no matter what characters did, the town stayed the same. And I think I have some ideas of what could be a really fun game.
So, first of all, you start as a lord with nothing but a tiny castle and some land around it, which all gradually develops depending on things you do in game. While playng as the lord, you write laws and decrees, make trade agreements with offmap lands and keep the subjects happy and loyal. Gradually, more people appear in the town and more roles, each with special goals and gameplay, which you are free to change between during the game. While you play, special quests for each role that influence the town would appear. Stuff like: "You're the healer, and people in town keep getting a strange rash, find out why" or "You're the merchant and your carriages keep getting plundered by bandits. How would you deal with that?" But, as a player, you can freely skip any quest and just play as some peasant family you got attached to, while things keep happening and changing around you. And that way, there is something to do for any kind of player. Wanna play Crusader Kings Lite? Be a scheming nobleman sweettalking people into joining you and assasinating the lord for your own gain, while arranging for a beneficial marriage. Wanna play a life sim? Be a baker, run your shop, become friends with other townsfolk, buy and store grain while spending time with your family. Wanna just chill? Be a herbalist living next to the woods, pick berries and make wooden carvings for your home. If all these things are implemented right, that could be an extremely fun game.

Anyway, sorry for the autistic TLDR, but I just had to write all these thoughts down somewhere, and this if the biggest Sims thread on the forum and that's somewhat relevant to the topic. And if any game devs are reading this, feel free to steal this idea, that would only make me glad.

sadly the game doesnt work on anything above windows 7. would like to play the copy ive got but cant. also, i feel like this game wouldve done better with some of sims 4's mechanics.

if you really really want a medieval sims game, you're genuinely better off wasting 500 hours downloading 20 gigabytes of sims 2 medieval mods and setting them up, it's so autistic and in-depth that it still amazes me even to this day

i can't recall any major compatibility issues with games on win8/10 that i didn't already have with 64 bit windows 7 (that weren't fixable to some extent), so unless you're using a cd copy, have that update installed that breaks games with safedisc, and don't have a no cd crack, i call bullshit

well multiple people have been having issues getting it to work on win8/10 since at least 2013 with windows 8.1. the only work around so far is installing it through origin. but if you had already bought and registered the game through steam or like i did with a physical release back in 2011, it was unlikely to work. especially since i cant register the game to my origin account and i dont know why

Don't know if it's the same for Medieval but the way I was taught to get Ts2 to run on win 8.1 is to tinker with a file called graphicrules.sgr. I don't remember off the top of my head but the added code allowed my game to use the graphics chip and forced the game to auto execute some of the game's commands at startup (for stability, performance and max settings).

i haven't attempted to play medieval since the black plague so i'm not sure why it wouldn't work on win10, i haven't used it seriously in years but as godawful as 10 is i honestly didn't have a ton of issues with software compatibility. i'd try yarring a copy from someplace and cracking it at least

Off-topic, but I've got to speak about Paralives for a second: I'm so tired of TS4 lackluster content and having to download mods to make the game somewhat interesting...if I can find them in between the overabundance of porn mods, that I decided to look into Paralives. I noticed their Patreon has nearly 40,000 a month. I hope for the best - because a decent simulation game is always a good thing, but I have a feeling this is going to blow up in a bad way, hilariously so. It's a small team that seems a little scatterbrained though (I think) dedicated. Also, their Discord is a fucking mess with people bombarding them with the most off-the-wall, inane requests for the game. I'm looking forward to the possible nuclear fallout that the community might reap in the upcoming years.

Until then, I'm back on The Sims 2 AKA the best one. The Sims 4 modding community drama is so weird and petty. Not that TS2 wasn't as well, it is just whereas the TS4 leans more towards woke nonsense with a surprising amount of pedoshit sprinkled in for good measure, TS2 was more absurd drama, from what I remember. Not counting the Carrigon rape mod that pissed many people off, the most infamous and funniest drama was easily the OMGWTFBBQ mod drama. I remember there were news outlet covering the story and everything. The community, though no less crazy back then, was also a lot more fun, and really weird shit sprung from the mod creators, and even the discourse was fun.

That mod is helpful in medieval neighbourhoods, for when you need to kill off a historically accurate % of infants but don't want to corrupt a game not designed for anyone younger than a teen dying. Best hide it out of the way and quickly dispose of the BBQ'd infant for full immersion.

Saw someone a while back mentioning that some of the black players want to have a more diverse set of experiences. Yeah, I don't know what they really think is going to happen.

To get away from how perverse or insane the community is, you're then basically asking for them to provide a bunch of likely highly unpalatable gameplay to a wider audience purely so you are able to self insert. Make no mistake, after immersing myself in the most autistic aspects of this community there are three groups.

The first uses it as a dollhouse/crazy life sim. The other half uses it as a self insert machine to try and indirectly relieve their own lack of satisfaction with their own lives. Then there is a third; purely sadistic though still motivated by their own lack of satisfaction with their own lives. I recall one particular user, whose info I think I have archived previously, gave their main sim bone aids or something and pointed out that she had made the sims like one of persistent excruciating pain. Then she went on to make it so he was gay and loved to get buttfucked which also so happens to break his fuckin bones or something. Oh yeah he can shid babies too.

Also, there's already a game to represent the black experience.

It was a mod that did exactly as it sounds from a simmer who made a lot of stuff back in the day. It allowed Sims to rape other Sims. This was back in 2010/2011 I think, though they modded longer than.

Carrigon could be pretty amusing, though. They couldn't understand why their mod was considered degenerate because they created it with the intent of "telling stories" and not fapping material - or so they justified anyone called them out for how weird that mod was.

Also, they got SUPER pissed when the last Sims 2 expansion pack came out and black magic witches either could be or either were naturally green (it's been a while since I played that expansion pack). They claimed it was offensive to Wiccans to insinuate magic users were ugly, green things like from the Wizard of Oz. Needless to say, a lot of people lol'd at them for being stupidly offended over that while having a graphic (for the day) rape mod.

I may be mistaken but I don't think they ended up migrating to the Sims 3. I like to pretend they got so triggered by the witch thing that they left the fandom but in reality, it was probably a combination of disinterest in the new entry, lack of knowledge of modding it, and the fact that another user, OnikiKay came along and one-upped Carrigon's mods. Oniki's Sims 3 mod not only included rape, but incest, bloody hymen breaking, and bestiality! Oh, the wonders of the Sims community! Oniki is still around and racking up an undisclosed amount on Patreon for her Sims 3 stuff.

In short. Carrigon walked so Oniki could run.

I just looked around to see if she (honestly I've got conflicting information if Carrigon is a she or he) was still around. Apparently, her final site finally went offline last year. Making the more colorful simmers people scramble to find traces of her mods.
