LOL I still remember transition from legit spoony content fans to 'you got me through the dark times'. It was the combo of him going to shit and also no tolerance for any negative or even constructive criticism. Nice to see some activity on this thread lately, even though as usual it's never Spoony or anything he's done since he lost the house much.
He was at $350-400 for a long long time on Patreon but that's nearly all dried up, I guess down to Curtis, Jackson, Warthog and a few diehards.

She's actually been catching up %-wise, up to almost $10 now:

But he's coming back..

Must be people who genuinely believe he's going to come back if they keep donating (If he didn't when he dropped below $1000 a month, what makes you think he'll go back to videos at all?)As depressing as it is thousands of people still throw thousands of dollars at MovieBob and Lindsay Ellis, at least we are in the final days of when Spoony and Marzgirl have any Patreon support.
Hell, just who the hell are the 57 people paying Spoony $150 a month at this point?
Regarding Ultima, I believe he watched his older brother play them and had an attachment to them through that, but I don't have any reason to believe he actually fully played through them. Almost everything in his retrospective could be easily learned second hand online and none of the shown gameplay was his.
I believe that might be the case, wasn't he critizised for "forgetting" the game had seahorses? It's simple, he didn't play through the ultima series. He's said he watched his brother play them, and as pointed out on the previous page he used other people's footage.
This is also the reason why the Ultima Underworld 2 review he made is especially awful, because he had 0 prior exposure to that one. He only talks about the first 5% of the game because he never actually managed to finish it, and most of the review is incessant crying about the first encounter with a headless anyway. It's simple, he didn't play through the ultima series.
The kind of dipship who feels obligated to throw him few bucks from his SSI.Hell, just who the hell are the 57 people paying Spoony $150 a month at this point?
TBF I didn't remember seahorses either as there is precisely one hanging out in Cove in the whole series (excepting Runes of Virtue of course). He put that dumb bit in the review because he had to pad out his runtime with something.I believe that might be the case, wasn't he critizised for "forgetting" the game had seahorses?
Which proves that he did play the other Ultima games, if he didn't he wouldn't have anything constructive to say about them either. IMO the reason he failed so much at Fallout and XCOM is that Ultimas have barely any rpg elements, as in there are no choices you would make in, say, a D&D game: no party building, equipment strategy, battle tactics, classes or races, spell memorization choice, choices at levelups, hell there's barely any stats there. Gameplay revolves around moving from city to city, asking everyone about their "name" and "job", writing down keywords to say to other NPCs, gathering plot items like in an adventure game. Combat and dungeon exploring is so braindead all you have to do is to buy enough reagents for all the utility and healing spells to win. This is also the reason why the Ultima Underworld 2 review he made is especially awful, because he had 0 prior exposure to that one.
At least Lewis puts the work in. He put out about 75 videos last year, compared to Spoony's....zero. Even if your content is absolute barrel-scraping garbage (which Linkara's appears to be) if it finds an audience then you just need to be consistent to make a nice little income off of it.It must be depressing to learn Linkara gets more donations and views than you.
Back when Youtube was in its early days, the "Angry Reviewer" trope used by Spoony and AVGN and others used the ancient tabloid journalism technique - pick a few points that you can whine over, ignore everything else, and claim its an accurate report nonetheless. Not a honest unbiased review, but instead an funny internet video people will show their friends ie. viral content. This is also the reason why the Ultima Underworld 2 review he made is especially awful, because he had 0 prior exposure to that one. He played the game, tried to fight the headless at level 1 instead of going somewhere else like a retard (just like in the infamous Fallout stream), quit the game soon after, and cobbled together a terrible video.
The worst part about this is the easily influenced people repeating everything their e-famous replacement father said. Every time UU2 was mentioned in any discussion on the web after that video, you had at least one teenager who never played the game regurgitating the same "UU2 is bad because I'm too stupid to just skip the room with the headless" statement.Back when Youtube was in its early days, the "Angry Reviewer" trope used by Spoony and AVGN and others used the ancient tabloid journalism technique - pick a few points that you can whine over, ignore everything else, and claim its an accurate report nonetheless. A good example of this is his Final Fantasy VIII 'review': he spends one 9 minute part endlessly drawing magic in an early field battle while screaming how much he hates the game. Sure, its an accurate depiction of Final Fantasy VIII in some respects, but more an entertainment video rather than a review.
yeah, same shit happened w NES games and the AVGN.The worst part about this is the easily influenced people repeating everything their e-famous replacement father said. I maintain that Castlevania 64 is an okay game despite AVGN having single-handedly destroyed its reputation. Cosmo Wright used to speedrun it before he trooned out.yeah, same shit happened w NES games and the AVGN.
Every post AVGN vid on TMNT NES shitted on it, when it's not a bad game. Difficult, yes. Bad, not really.
FFX has always been highly regarded? From what I’ve heard, FFX-2 still gets decisive reviews, and FFXIII still is rated poorly. I think people have come around to VIII thoughFFX in particular seems to gets a lot of praise these days.
I was referring more to its rediscovery by younger gamers, though I do think there was a very long period where it was (superficially) maligned because people did not understand the Tidus laughing scene.FFX has always been highly regarded?
To be fair I would consider this the exception to my theory but I remember having seen an LP of XIII before Spoony made his review, and while it wasn't amazing I never felt it was nearly as bad as Spoony (and others) depicted so I would be unsurprised if it got reappraised eventually. (Even if that means being considered "okay" instead of "travesty".)FFXIII still is rated poorly
It was pretty well-liked when I was young during the PS2 era. 7 was usually the high bar, but X was considered good too, just not as good. Mostly for the effects, music, and visuals. The voice acting... not so much.FFX has always been highly regarded? From what I’ve heard, FFX-2 still gets decisive reviews, and FFXIII still is rated poorly. I have to admit I'm guilty of this. I hated Metal Gear Solid for years just because of Yahtzee's MGS4 review. The cutscene-to-gameplay ratio is still ridiculous in those games, but they are great fun if you're willing to indulge Kojima's autism. The worst part about this is the easily influenced people repeating everything their e-famous replacement father said.
This isn't exactly true. There are certain parts of TMNT that are just coded wrong. The video below covers the notorious water level pretty well, but if you have neither the time nor interest TL;DR is the collision detection is wrong and a lot of the movement controls either do nothing or don't do what they're supposed to.Every post AVGN vid on TMNT NES shitted on it, when it's not a bad game. i've watched that vid when it came out, and i still stand by what i say. level 2 was difficult, but not impossible. Bad code doesn't necessarily make it a bad game. This isn't exactly true. True, every game probably has some questionable code, but when your bad code causes the player to take damage when they clearly shouldn't I don't blame anyone for thinking it sucks and giving up.Bad code doesn't necessarily make it a bad game.
It was certainly a bit more damaging for games when rentals were a thing. New game came out? Go rent it for $4 or whatever, find out the 2nd level is a pain in the ass for some reason you can't understand while in elementary school or whatever, as far as you're concerned the game is dogshit at that point. Of course at the same time there wasn't really much of an internet to go scream about how it's shit and leave a bad review, but you also couldn't just go find a work around either.True, every game probably has some questionable code, but when your bad code causes the player to take damage when they clearly shouldn't I don't blame anyone for thinking it sucks and giving up.
Just because some people are willing to learn to work around bad code/design doesn't make the game good.
And that's why, to this day, I have never got past the first screen in Judge Dredd for the Genesis.Of course at the same time there wasn't really much of an internet to go scream about how it's shit and leave a bad review, but you also couldn't just go find a work around either.
How much of this is due to their actual caliber, and how much is due to the quality of present-day games is a separate question.I maintain that Castlevania 64 is an okay game despite AVGN having single-handedly destroyed its reputation. Cosmo Wright used to speedrun it before he trooned out.
Donkey Kong 64 is another game I'd consider a classic that has a surprisingly bad reputation attributable to YouTubers.
As far as Spoony goes, I consider it ironic that he always bragged about making his bones shitting on Final Fantasy but in the end he didn't move the needle on those games' legacies. If anything it seems like the FF games he reviewed are being rediscovered by millennials and zoomers in recent years. FFX in particular seems to gets a lot of praise these days.
