I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

Did AoC give Omar the economics advice behind this tweet? It's about the sort of dumb shit she'd coach her pal on -

A $15 an hour minimum wage would raise the inflation rate, especially if tied to inflation.

Why do people think she's representative of the working class anyway? Is it purely because she had one bartending job at some point?

Maybe this is the Brit part of me, but simply having a job doesn't make you working class, ffs.

She would have been better off just telling the truth about her middle class family. She didn't have everything she wanted, but the brat got most of it. She spins that into a hardscrabble life on the block when the bitch is from Sesame Street

"Working class" is a weird phrase. Wouldn't that be basically everyone except Trust Fund kids, career charity cases, and college professors?

She's not representative of the working class, the real working class. She is however 100% representative of the class of worthless college degree and moving from that into a job in the service industry/NEET/E-beggar class that likes to think that they are what Marx was talking about. The real American working class, the plumbers, the truckers, the loggers, the oil workers, the farmers, all solid Red, because all the blue collar know that mass illegal immigration fucks us hard. Try working a job with illegal immigrants. You fucking cant, not easily, because you know that "American jobs for Americans" mentality? Illegals have that same idea, that they are promised the construction jobs, the landscaping jobs, the gardening, and a white person coming in is stealing their work. So they are hostile and tense, trying to get you out, they will shit talk you to employers and turn around to you and pretend not to speak english if you are trying to work with them. If you support mass illegal immigration, you cannot also support blue collar American workers.

I prefer blue collar vs white collar. Working class is just something given so college kids working at starbucks can feel like Marx is smiling at them.

Go look at what movieblob thinks about the working class; per him it's a thinly spread dying minority between New York and LA, who deserve to be rounded up and put in extermination camps.

But yes the vast majority of America, whether democrats, republicans, anarchists, communists, libertarians, whatever flavor, are working class. We don't live in the Glorious Moon Future of post-want.

A $15 an hour minimum wage would raise the inflation rate, especially if tied to inflation.

The big thing is the cost of housing sucking up all that money. Fifteen an hour is constantly touted as the solution to rising housing costs, but all it will do is make the problem worse. Among the truly poor, you’ll also see the same parasites that already prey on them finding new ways to scam them out of their income. This is why I’m also opposed to a universal basic income.

My guess is mildew. That's what it looks like. But it might just be the paint has worn off where people are leaning against the wall all the time.
I've been in holding. Theres shit blood and spit on everything. It's what people do to act in control, and it's their own damned fault.

AoC should know that, since she goes on and on about her Econ degree.

This is the biggest mystery to me, how someone can have an econ degree and get so, much, basic, stuff, WRONG. And wrong by a country mile...

- accounting errors represent actual money
- hiking the minimum wage will permanently increase the wealth of the middle class
- plans that cost more than the sum total of the world's wealth RIGHT NOW can still be implemented by taxing "The tippy tops"

Did she attend a single class she didn't sleep through?

She probably has a BA in econ meaning her only required hard courses were a basic math course and 100 level micro/macro with the rest being nonsense liberal arts electives.

To me, the working class are the people who are tasked with building an maintaining the foundations of society. So, a primary school teacher may be white collar, however they are working class, impo, because they are necessary for maintaining a functional citizenry, (unlike secondary education, which is just as optional as a whiskey sour or a coffee milkshake.)
