I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

U.N. Predicts Disaster if Global Warming Not Checked
PETER JAMES SPIELMANN
June 29, 1989

UNITED NATIONS (AP) _ A senior U.N. environmental official says entire nations could be wiped off the face of the Earth by rising sea levels if the global warming trend is not reversed by the year 2000.

Coastal flooding and crop failures would create an exodus of ″eco- refugees,′ ′ threatening political chaos, said Noel Brown, director of the New York office of the U.N. Environment Program, or UNEP.

He said governments have a 10-year window of opportunity to solve the greenhouse effect before it goes beyond human control.

As the warming melts polar icecaps, ocean levels will rise by up to three feet, enough to cover the Maldives and other flat island nations, Brown told The Associated Press in an interview on Wednesday.

Coastal regions will be inundated; one-sixth of Bangladesh could be flooded, displacing a fourth of its 90 million people. A fifth of Egypt’s arable land in the Nile Delta would be flooded, cutting off its food supply, according to a joint UNEP and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency study.

″Ecological refugees will become a major concern, and what’s worse is you may find that people can move to drier ground, but the soils and the natural resources may not support life. Africa doesn’t have to worry about land, but would you want to live in the Sahara?″ he said.

UNEP estimates it would cost the United States at least $100 billion to protect its east coast alone.

Shifting climate patterns would bring back 1930s Dust Bowl conditions to Canadian and U.S. wheatlands, while the Soviet Union could reap bumper crops if it adapts its agriculture in time, according to a study by UNEP and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis.

Excess carbon dioxide is pouring into the atmosphere because of humanity’s use of fossil fuels and burning of rain forests, the study says. The atmosphere is retaining more heat than it radiates, much like a greenhouse.

The most conservative scientific estimate that the Earth’s temperature will rise 1 to 7 degrees in the next 30 years, said Brown.

The difference may seem slight, he said, but the planet is only 9 degrees warmer now than during the 8,000-year Ice Age that ended 10,000 years ago.

Brown said if the warming trend continues, ″the question is will we be able to reverse the process in time? We say that within the next 10 years, given the present loads that the atmosphere has to bear, we have an opportunity to start the stabilizing process.″

He said even the most conservative scientists ″already tell us there’s nothing we can do now to stop a ... change″ of about 3 degrees.

″Anything beyond that, and we have to start thinking about the significant rise of the sea levels ... we can expect more ferocious storms, hurricanes, wind shear, dust erosion.″

He said there is time to act, but there is no time to waste.

UNEP is working toward forming a scientific plan of action by the end of 1990, and the adoption of a global climate treaty by 1992. In May, delegates from 103 nations met in Nairobi, Kenya - where UNEP is based - and decided to open negotiations on the treaty next year.

Nations will be asked to reduce the use of fossil fuels, cut the emission of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases such as methane and fluorocarbons, and preserve the rain forests.

″We have no clear idea about the ecological minimum of green space that the planet needs to function effectively. What we do know is that we are destroying the tropical rain forest at the rate of 50 acres a minute, about one football field per second,″ said Brown.

Each acre of rain forest can store 100 tons of carbon dioxide and reprocess it into oxygen.

Brown suggested that compensating Brazil, Indonesia and Kenya for preserving rain forests may be necessary.

The European Community istalking about a half-cent levy on each kilowatt- hour of fossil fuels to raise $55 million a year to protect the rain forests, and other direct subsidies may be possible, he said.

The treaty could also call for improved energy efficiency, increasing conservation, and for developed nations to transfer technology to Third World nations to help them save energy and cut greenhouse gas emissions, said Brown.

Yep. Even by their own numbers, America is already so far ahead of many sections of the world that, if we all committed mass suicide tomorrow, we wouldn't amount to much more than a rounding error in the math.

Graphs sometimes deceptively try to show otherwise, but look into how the data is being displayed - by trying to tie it to a per-capita display, or by relative strength of the economy are two common and easy ways to massage the data to get it to look how they want it to.

It turns out being poor as shit and massively overpopulated are not good ways to reduce pollution.
Also poor people are gross and their cclothes are so grotty! Major pukage!

it's always nice to be reminded that the UN has always been a useless piece of shit.

C'mon guys, why not just pass the new green deal...

Anyone else remember when the limit for apocalypse was 4 degrees, then it was 3 degrees, at Paris 2 degrees, and now 'the scientists say' we gotta keep it below 1.5 or we're doooooommmeedd lmao?

How many of you guys bet that next year they'll make it 1.4 or 1.35 just to shriek about the world ending in 5 years?

there is one consistent message i've gotten from american politics and environmentalists: vote democrat to prevent the apocalypse. the moving timelines are simply reflective of how terrified they are of losing power.

looks like Ocasiio-Corrrte is not retarded
she's batshit insane :cryblood:

Hello fellow millennials aren’t I so cool and hip! That BASED AOC is getting a comic series!

Talk about a cult of personality.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is living every comic book fan's dream.
The newly elected US congresswoman stars as a sassy superhero in an upcoming comic book titled, "Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Freshman Force: New Party Who Dis?"
In one of the just-released book covers, Ocasio-Cortez stands over a knocked-out Republican elephant while a Democrat donkey looks on nervously in the background. Her superhero outfit is a white pantsuit, and her gadget is a smartphone, through which she wields her 3.2 million Twitter followers. Another cover shows her in a Wonder Woman-like outfit.
Ocasio-Cortez, 29, is the youngest woman ever elected to Congress and has become an unofficial leader of the newest class of House Democrats.
Who is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez?

Who is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez?

"There's just something about Alexandria that resonates with so many people," said Josh Blaylock, the book's creator.
Although the title and cover prominently feature Ocasio-Cortez, Blaylock said the comic book is going to be "a collection of stories that all embrace the theme that we're excited about all of the energy and positive change this new crop of Congresspersons is going to bring."
The comic book will be like an anthology, and the stories will span all genres.
"Some of the stories are really sweet; some are completely absurd and satirical; some are cathartic and venting," Blaylock said.
The comic book, by independent publisher Devil's Due, comes out in May.
Ocasio-Cortez has become something of a celebrity -- and a target of criticism from some Republicans -- for her meteoric rise and outspoken style. She has not commented on the comic book, though she previously hinted that she enjoys reading them.
Last month she quoted the vigilante Rorschach from the comic book series "Watchmen" while responding to a Politico story that claimed Democratic leaders were trying to "rein in" Ocasio-Cortez.

Devil's Due has also released satirical comic books about former President Barack Obama, who was transformed into "Barack the Barbarian."

There is no reaction gif strong enough to capture my confusion and annoyance at this.

Holy Moses that is obnoxious.

This is like when occupy wall street happened, and everyone was like, fine, I guess we gotta take these idiots seriously. OK idiots, what do you want?

Then they nominated a dog as their spokesman.

This was socialism's time to make everyone listen to their message. And their message is "Spend more money than there is in the entire world, then come back and see me for step 2".

I think they probably should have stuck with the dog.

Since most of these people have no idea of how money or scarcity works, there primary answer for this will simply be to print more money.

lol people are so salty and mad at her they are calling her a witch

She scares them: Conservative Christians claim Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a witch guided by demons and leading an attack against President Donald Trump.
Frightened by a smart, articulate, attractive young woman, conservative Christians panic, worried that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is really a witch leading a demonic attack against President Trump.
Earlier this month, Dave Kubal, president of the Religious Right group Intercessors for America, explained how Rep. Ocasio-Cortez is connected to “a coven of witches that cast spells on President Trump 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”
Immediately after interviewing conservative Christian congressman Jody Hice of Georgia during his monthly “prayer call,” Kubal told his followers:
It’s been widely publicized that there is a coven of witches that cast spells on President Trump 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This particular coven is found in the southern portion of New York City.
So, right in the middle of all of this, the southern district, in the middle of where these witches are doing the 24/7 spell-casting, we find the territory of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Kubal added:
Her district is in the center of all of this going on. Is this a coincidence? Maybe … Is there an evil thread running through this area, trying to dispel diabolical power?
The desired answer to the absurd rhetorical question is obvious: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is supposedly a witch leading a diabolical attack against President Trump.
Kubal then went on to lead his followers “in a prayer against the demonic forces that are clustered in southern New York City” and “operating through the likes of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.”

The fact that gullible conservative Christians believe the notion that Ocasio-Cortez is a witch should not be surprising. Even before Ocasio-Cortez was elected to office in 2018 conservative Christians were claiming that feminists were really witches placing powerful “hexes” on Trump.

Indeed, always superstitious and gullible, many fearful conservative Christians have expressed fears that feminists like Ocasio-Cortez are using black magic to sabotage the Trump administration.
Feeding the gullible Christians, late last year conservative website Breitbart reported on “the rise of feminist witchcraft,” noting:
Following President Trump’s inauguration, witches, covens, and even A-list celebrities started to hex the president with frequent “spells.”
Bottom line: Gullible conservative Christians claim Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is leading “a coven of witches that cast spells on President Trump 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

I don’t know who’s more retarded. The fundies who are frightened by witchcraft or the person who wrote that down and thought “mmm, yeah. I think I’ll publish this.”

She turned me into a newt!
I hope you get better.

I don’t know who’s more exceptional. The fundies who are frightened by witchcraft or the person who wrote that down and thought “mmm, yeah. I think I’ll publish this.”
The tardbiscuit that published this. Fundies are fundies, you know how they operate and you know how they'll react. They're predictable so you know how to either shut them down or avoid them. TDS suffers though don't know when to give up and will keep throwing themselves head first against that wall known as 'Reality' long after most fundies have packed it up and called it a day.

Even the Paris Accord were grudgingly acknowledged as a thing where powerless UN officials could feel important by having world leaders pay them lip-service but it was ultimately pointless.

I've said it before and I say it again: rising sea-levels, the number one threat in the news, threatens expensive real-estate all over the world infinitely more than it threatens poor people in shacks that can pick up their shacks and move years before the sea hits their feet.

I like how when it's crazy people accusing other people of being witches it's silly and funny but we also get articles like "Meet the witches hexing Trump with binding spells" and we're supposed to be like "Yaaas moon goddesses"
