I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

Wild rice and salmon aren't champagne and lobster

Arn't these the people who say poors can't afford fucking apples and have to eat at MikkyD? And yeah, no shit they aren't the same thing. Otherwise I would have said "Wild rice and salmon". I'm exaggerating to illustrate a point.

:trump:

If the poor didn't eat McDonald's every day, they might not be so poor. Five dollars a meal on average? I dunno, haven't eaten it in years.

God I hate my job but if i take more than a day off I get restless as fuck yet this communist bitch is bragging about taking a week off

>takes time off
>before you even officially start working

This bitch is useless.

Because that screams poor working class. It is hilarious how she is the steriotypes of a champagne socialist. Totally out of touch with the real working class.
She's a spoiled idiot who feels guilty she was born into a wealthier family and lived a more privlege life. I witnessed this in 2006 when I moved to Austin. I had no idea why anyone would be ashamed of being born into a wealthier family if you aren't being a giant dick to others.

You guys are acting like salmon is expensive or something
Shit it is expensive as fuck. For the price of a small amount I can get a ton of chicken breasts that I can cook myself. Also the price of a bullet, I can kill a hog in the wild and have a freezer full of meat.

Because she still thinks this is what "normal" people do. She thinks this is bonding with "average" folk.
Yeah it's like Paltrow with her idiotic website and wannabe Martha Stewart advice. At least Paltrow isn't technically lying since she's a rich white woman who thinks her advice works for everyone. She's not identifying herself as a poor person.

I've been poor and never felt shamed for taling a little "me" time.
Nor would I EVER shame someone for doing the same.

I don't know anyone that would shame a woman for using a face mask when she's stressed.

I'm amazed at the amount of talking out her ass this woman does.
That's the problem. This woman acts like she has been busting her ass and pulling 70 hour work weeks like your average working joe and jane. That's why we're all ready to shit on this bitch.

Is this self-care taxpayer funded?
I'm assuming that's a rhetorical question but on the safe side if it's not (or in the case someone doesn't realize the answer): it most certainly is.

The idea that "self care" is something to politicize for brownie points with her base is something I have a hard time grasping.

>takes time off
>before you even officially start working

This bitch is useless.

Meh, running a campaign is exhausting and probably one of the most difficult things you can do given that you're not guaranteed jack shit at the end of it. She deserves a break but just STFU about it.

She's not drawing a congressional salary yet. So unless you want to get her on some sort of "it's all taxpayer money" autistic technicality she's not.

Like, she's a hypocrite with questionable values but no need to dogpile on stuff that isn't true.

Wild rice and salmon aren't champagne and lobster
A pound of Salmon is two pounds of sirloin is four pounds of chicken. A pound of wild rice is four pounds of white rice twelve pounds of brown rice. Unless you're growing the rice and catching the fish, that sort of diet isn't frugal, and it's not even necessarily healthy- but it is trendy. "Constant Yoga, Salmon, and Wild Rice" is a look she's trying to wear, and it's one she thinks is relatable to her base, judging by her comments in the quotes.
Maybe working Joes have picked up rebellious housewife fashion while I wasn't looking, but I suspect otherwise.

So they call her Occasional-Cortex because of stupid crap she says.

Well, the cortex also controls motor function so we can call her that because she's lazy too.

Refusing to do her job for petty, self-serving reasons? Complaining about not being able to accept gifts due to ethics rules? My God, she was BORN to be in Congress!
But shes not even sworn in yet? Dont get me wrong this shit is dumb but shes technically not on the clock yet.

I like to wonder what would happen to these pansies if another Great Depression was to happen.
We had something similar happen in 2008 with the Recession period that was in part caused by the banks and the housing market. If something as drastic as another Depression happened, many of these people would find themselves without a job or a place to live if they don’t develop enough useful skills. If anything, if something like another Depression were to happen, I’d hope that it will make people (not just millenials) more resilient against the adversity instead of wallowing in self pity.

Yeah she needs a holiday, just as well the Christmas break is coming up, the traditional time a person takes time off from their work to self care. Oh wait no, she can't wait otherwise she will burn out. Looks like she will be off from now till the 5th. Good work if you can get it.

. . . She couldn't just say that she was looking forward to spending the holidays with family or whatever?

That would be a typical response this time of year. Probably too typical for AOC though, she just needs to stand out (for all the wrong reasons).
