I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

For someone who is so vocal about how much she hates Trump, she certainly doesn't seem to have any problem in using his playbook.

I'll give her credit; she doesn't lack for audacity. I'm kind of impressed.

She's also posted her 'Green New Deal' (goes to a Google doc; archive keeps shitting its pants). Brutal fisking of this crap over on Sarah Hoyt's site here.

If the Dems don't smack this silly bitch down hard, she's liable to disrupt things in ways that'll have them thinking 'Wow, the GOP had it EASY with Trump!'.

This is gonna be fun.
Is it possible to not end up with a seat on even a single committee? Otoh I want her on as many committees with real power as possible. She's perfect for Ways and Means. Perfect.

She could be our own Diane Abbott.

Good God, I'm absolutely tired of hearing about this socialist brainlet. The left is really this retarded.

I doubt she'll very far before she gets outed by her own party for being a liability. y

This is the woman we're supposed to feel bad because rent in DC is expensive?

I'm glad she's in the spotlight. Her entire existence is the best argument against socialism we've seen in a while.
If anything happens to her Ilhan Omar is ready to step up in her place, but the party is working overtime to protect their precious good boy points that come from having a Muslim on side.

I thought she was taking the week off?

That was a publicity stunt to "relate" to "the poor."

Or to distract her opponents from plans to PURGE THE CAPITALIST SCUM FROM THE PEOPLE'S PARTY

I don’t think the left realizes how damaging she is to their brand. She comes off as a petulant child asking mommy & daddy (government) for a bigger allowance while shitting on the floor and throwing a tantrum. It’s also going to further erode millennial’s feelings toward voting and government and just reinforce they shouldn’t participate in politics.

I’ve said this many times, she’s the new Michelle Bachman.

If I was a die hard Republican, I’d secretly love her for inflicting more damage on the Democrats than a Republican from her district ever could.

I doubt she’ll out Jefferies, but the needless battle is quite hilarious.

I bet there are going (if there aren't already) dakimakuras of her on every "nazi" basement dweller bed. We are this close to have an otome game

If anything happens to her Ilhan Omar is ready to step up in her place, but the party is working overtime to protect their precious good boy points that come from having a Muslim on side.

They are going to screw up on that. At this pace Omar is going to be part of the obsolete past in an issue of months at the stature of Trotsky.

I wish SNL was more politically balanced with their skits. AOC is a prime target. Imagine a skit where Cory Booker is like the experienced Jedi master teaching Reye (AOC) the secrets of the force (i.e political corruption.) There could be a fair bit of mileage on that.

Your first mistake is assuming SNL has the potential to be funny

But that would actually be funny and require the writers to do some work, so naturally it'll never happen.

EDIT: Ninja'd

Once upon a time, perhaps. They've pigeonholed themselves at this point though, all they've got are people to furiously clap and hate-laugh at terrible jokes about trump. They can't alienate that audience, they're all they have left.

EDIT: Also, the last time they did a sketch that supported a conservative position, the DNC and Soros made them change it for re-airings. And that sketch was hilarious, Bush 2, Barney what'shisface, and uh... you know... whats her name there with the democratic party... they all got made fun of.

It was a sketch about the housing crash, at one point there was a caption: "George Soros: Owner of the DNC"

The re-aired versions had this caption removed.
