I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

You know what's weird, despite living in Houston I've always been oblivious to us having nuclear power plants since we have so much natural gas and oil
These people don't want you to know. They'd rather live on coal and oil plants that heavily pollute while making a show of crying for mother earth because they can dangle a carrot of a green dream vased on impractical tech forever out of reach and act like victims because it hasn't been achieved yet. It's the ideal con.

Only reason I know of it is because an old coworker is an armed guard at one. Those guys don't fuck around apparently. They're armed with m4s and shit. Makes sense, hitting a nuke plant would be a big win for terrorist groups.

Pretty much, the ironic thing is nuclear weapons killed nucLear power because in retard minds they're the same thing.

You know something hilarious, with all this shit about green energy and jerking off over renewables? You know which state has had the fastest growth in renewable energy for years on end, threatening to rocket into the #1 spot for most renewable energy of any state in the country?

Fuckin' Texas. Almost all of it from wind turbines.

Look at this, they were in the lead for November 2018:
That's 6.5 TWh for the month.
Washington was #2, courtesy of the Grand Coulee dam and it's 13 friends on the Columbia River, with 6.2 TWh. Their numbers haven't really gone up for decades.
And big dick, top of the world, better than you California, coming in with 5.1 TWh.

Rick Perry has done more for renewable energy than Ocasio-Cortez.

How inspiring. Or retarded. It's one of the two.

24/7 university libraries only work because they have restricted card access or hourly building-wide security sweeps to keep out the homeless and transients.

Maybe the university libraries are better because they restrict them to students, but city libraries are bad enough in the day. I know someone who works at one and some of the stories she has about some of the dregs that show up there would make you want to stay far the fuck away at night.

For some reason, Socialists assume nothing they do can be abused unless THEY want it to be.

I guess that one episode from Tales From The Crypt was kinda right about that

It's funny nuclear energy is actually uneconomical in Texas due to the sheer amount of oil, gas and coal we have which is why despite permits being issued and construction approved no new nuclear power have been built

I happen to quite like AOC myself. Not sure where the hatred comes from to be honest. She is one of the few politicians that is actually trying to make changes.
Yeah, the GND would cost 93 trillion dollars. Nobody on this planet has that kind of money to spend on a pipe dream. Sure, changes can be good, but anyone who supports this change truly doesn’t understand economics or practicality.

Yeah but not for the better
Only one way to find out, it's not like we can't change things back if they really become worse.

That number sounds made up. I have to ask if you know anything about economics, markets, etc. I see lots of people say things, but I don't think they even know what they are saying.

That’s the estimated cost. You can find the source in this thread somewhere. Logistically speaking, having free college, free healthcare, passenger railway systems throughout the country and new (“environmentally friendly”) construction plans for every building in the United States is insane. No country can support that.

The numbers come from a study that was released publicly (archive). Although the study was run by a conservative group, their numbers and relevant justifications are included in the report. It'd be more helpful for you to disagree with the specifics of the estimate and how it was built rather than lamely say "wow you obviously don't know anything about economics, markets, etc". I'm sure there is plenty to critique so if you're going to disagree please do so in a way that doesn't make you seem stupid and lazy.
