I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

Sounds like something ol' Alex Jones used to talk about, how certain peoples can have a certain combination of dna in their system and you could create some sort of bacteria that would fatal to those with it and harmless to those without.
That would be genemodding a virus to target certain haplogroups. The same haplogroups 23&Me and similar ancestry websites use to tell you where your ancestors probably originated. Ancestry.com is owned by the Mormons and they use that data to refine their purity tests. What China gets up to with this information is undoubtedly much darker. Africa is easier to strip mine without angry native populations, after all.

They're right about some of her ideas being popular but tainting them with exceptional ideas doesn't help those ideas become a reality.
Of course "gimme money for doing nothing" is a popular idea among Millennials, that doesn't mean it's good. It's like saying SDI was popular in some circles and thus good, when it was really just a sci-fi nerd's wet dream.

Oddly enough, it is conservatives who are making her look good. Conservatives become insanely pro-giving corporations free money when it comes time to criticize her.

Supposedly the South Africans and their Israeli buddies looked into creating race-specific diseases and came to the conclusion that it would be very difficult to create and implement.

Edit: That was in the 80's though, and tech has moved very far since then.

Modern technology makes it a lot more possible, and if you use several markers to activate increasing amounts of lethality you can avoid a lot of collateral damage. If the effects can be mitigated by medical treatment you're in even better luck because the third world will be hit twice as hard while your first world bystanders have a better shot at surviving.

If you want to be a real dick you could have some of the lower activation symptoms effect decreased fertility or induce sterility outright, so even if they survive they can't breed.

tfw the genophage could actually become a reality

Shit, could you make an airborne virus that is highly infective with minimal symptoms and the primary effect of making people infertile unless vaccinated? That would be some Deus Ex level shit.

Just vaccinate yourself, your family, and everyone you trust to reproduce and trust your private armies to bring you though the Children of Men style apocalypse.

Edit: now that I think about it Children of Men was probably caused by elitist technocrats doing just that

why is a junior member of congress allowed to propose something as huge and sweeping

Here's a white person complaining about Bernie's canvassers being mostly white. This is why Bernie needs an Alexandria by his side: for colour-correction purposes. That's why he pushes her to the front so that when she gets burned, he survives. The Dems are run at the top by rich white business men, they use these young idealistic coloured women for publicity and to deflect from themselves.

Possibly? I'm not a biological warfare expert, but it isn't as if there aren't a host of airborne and highly infectious viri to choose from as your carrier. You'd need it to strike both the pulmonary and reproductive tracts, but induced severe scarring of selected reproductive tissues should be relatively hard to spot. If you build up scarification in the uterus/fallopian tube and the vas deferens/epididymis that should reduce fertility quite a bit in any mated pair, as you'd reduce both the capability for a fertilized ovum to travel and implant, but also for one to be fertilized as you've restricted the supply of sperm.

Just vaccinate yourself, your family, and everyone you trust to reproduce and trust your private armies to bring you though the Children of Men style apocalypse.

It would certainly be a slow rolling one, and as speculated it would likely devolve into some degree of open war. Your suppressed, infertile targets (racial or otherwise) might seek to take you to the grave with them. Which is why it might be better to pair that infertility with a faster acting set of symptoms, so your enemies that survive the initial plague can never recover to trouble you.

Instead of a virus that makes people infertile, couldn't you just use whatever chemical's turning the frogs gay to stop overpopulation?

Not to mention, he specifically went out of his way to trash people who took drugs. He's a massive hypocrite on top of everything else.

But yeah, Rush Limbaugh is the one and only person ever to have that job, so how can we know the pain of being a jackass on the radio?

I'm not denying you on that front, but in purely pragmatic terms I can't fault him for not blowing his grasp as top-man of conservative radio, with even the hint of a drug dependency. The ultra-right and Bush/Clinton minions alike would've shamed him into oblivion.

This was while the drug wars and ad campaigns were kicking into high gear, Limbaugh was it on the right, and the writers of the Fairness Doctrine wanted nothing more than for him to fuck up enough for the fundies & FCC to yank his funding and credentials.

And like I said, dominating in that industry against such cognitive dissonance & hostility for so long has got to be rough.

Hunter S. didn't go gonzo as a journalistic tool alone; he fought against the same type of old-boy's club that ran his mediums, and sometimes only an Oxyluude cocktail with a rum chaser will make the work bearable.

Ocasio-Cortez responds to carbon footprint exposé: I’m just ‘living in the world’
By Tamar Lapin
March 3, 2019 | 10:12am

Freshman New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez responded to The Post’s report on her giant carbon footprintby saying she’s just “living in the world.”

“I also fly and use AC,” the Green New Deal touting pol tweeted Saturday night. “Living in the world as it is isn’t an argument against working towards a better future.”

According to the GND fact sheet, the nation must, “totally overhaul transportation by massively expanding electric vehicle manufacturing, build charging stations everywhere, build out high-speed rail … create affordable public transit available to all, with goal to replace every combustion-engine vehicle.”

But since declaring her candidacy in May 2017, Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign relied heavily on combustible-engine cars — taking Ubers and Lyfts instead of hopping on the subway.

In her rebuttal, the Bronx-born Congresswoman said the GND is about systemic change — not about personal gas-guzzling practices.

“The Green New Deal is about putting a LOT of people to work in developing new technologies, building new infrastructure, and getting us to 100% renewable energy.”

In a tweet of The Post’s front-page cover on Sunday, Ocasio-Cortez snipped, “The Post put the fact that I get into cars (while proposing a plan to invest in better car technology on the front page,” with an emoji of someone laughing so hard they cry.

“Pack it up folks, the Pulitzer’s been decided. No one can rival this kind of hard-hitting journalism.”

The pol didn’t address the finding from the American Public Transportation Association that “a single person… by eliminating one car and taking public transportation instead, a savings of up to 30 percent of carbon-dioxide emissions can be realized.”

Instead, Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign logged 1,049 car service transactions totaling over $23,000 between May 16, 2017 and Dec. 31, 2018, The Post found. Her campaign once booked 26 car-service transactions in a single day.

Even though her Queens HQ was just a one-minute walk to the 7 train, her campaign only made 52 metro card purchases, spending about $8,300.

And despite a high-speed rail being the cornerstone of her green strategy, the Democratic firebrand took Amtrak 18 times, compared to 66 airline transactions costing $25,174.54 during the campaign season.

She really is Trump on the left, she cannot leave anything alone. She has to respond on twitter.

It's interesting that by making these arguments, these twits admit that they don't want to live in the world that they describe as ideal, and that no one would unless forced to do so by threat of government jackboots. Because they certainly could start paying more in taxes, having a minimal carbon footprint, etc., but they don't because no one's putting a gun to their head like they want to put guns to everyone else's heads.
