I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

She's a lolcow but I appreciate finally hearing an elected Democrat admit Obama conned progressives in 2008.
She's absolutely right about Obama.

But we've been saying it for 5 years and we just get called nazis for it, so once again the truth is only true when the right person says it.

Also, this part:
The party’s leftist wing, led by New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
Being loud on twitter is not the same as being a "leader" of anything. After she loses her reelection bid in a couple years, let's do a tally of the real bills she championed or the policy she influenced. I still believe her entire brief congressional presence is just a prelude to a cushy career of public speaking gigs and book deals.

Honestly I admire this woman's dedication to burning absolutely every bridge within eyesight. She may be a crappy politician, but she's one Hell of an arsonist.
I want to see this sentiment gain traction. If for nothing else, to see Saint Obama intervene.

Bill Nye has been cucked for a while and after his Netflix trash this is no surprise.

I don’t know what AOC’s incumbency chances are, but Ilhan Omar is probably going to stay in congress until she’s forced out or dies.

The people of her district voted for her because she’s Muslim. Unless that changes, they will vote for her again.

Alexandria "If a Democrat so much as talks to a Republican, I will have them primaried" Cortez is going to bring us together to solve the problem, Bill? Yeah okay.

I mean, let's call a spade a spade. Obama told all of these fucking idiots exactly this in his farewell address to the nation. He told his supporters and opponents that our divisions were being exploited by fear. Then Obama's successor said the same thing in his inaugural address. And then every liberal, the entire media, and half of the conservatives in the United States decided to do the work of the US' geopolitical rivals for them and continue fighting among themselves and grinding all progress to a halt.

Nye's show on Netflix was a fucking embarrassment. He used mosaicsisim as proof gender is a spectrum. Mosaicsism is a genetic disorder. It is not a natural state of things. You don't get to use genetic abnormalities to prove that.

It's an error in replication and is not supposed to happen.

I have a confession to make.

I don't know the difference between tape worms and ring worms :/

I've never had worms (:_(

Both are parasites. Ringworm isn't actually a worm, but a highly contagious fungal infection that looks like half a ring that is a pain to get rid of. Its dermatological on the skin. A tapeworm is an intestinal parasite.

Holy shit Omar is really bad at politics. It's like forming a new party named "The Socialist Faggot and Jew Coalition" to run for public office in Alabama.

Bill Nye the Climate Change Alarmist guy a mechanical engineer who as an aging entertainer hasn't actually had anything close to a hit since his 90's TV show larping as a real scientist supports AOC a middle class urban socialite millennial who studied economics but could only get a job as a bartender upon graduating, and only won her political position because she stood in a safe democratic seat vs an aged democratic incumbent and won with a whopping 15% voter turn out.

Truly these are the scions of our times, and know what is good for all of us lesser dumb and ignorant mortals.

Watching Cortez and Omar running around mucking things up for the Dems is some serious schadenfreude overload.

Someone at the DNC is taking another long drag while staring at a full ashtray, regretting the fuck out of the hype they gave two outsider political neophytes that seem to relish in fucking things up for the party daily. They'll be much harder to muzzle in Current Year due to the very social media platforms the Dems have relied on to curate their messaging.

After all the leeway progressives have enjoyed while attempting to normalize ideas that the majority rejects, it's good to see the latest Dem gambit in this realm blow up in their face so publicly.

Well who in the DNC would have ever thought that a strictly religious Muslim progressive tm would ever be Anti-Semitic or hate Israel? Or a Brooklyn based middle class latino Marxist would ever be an expert on climate change?

It's like they were gate keeping these people out of mainstream politics for the longest for no reason other than election cycles.

I don't know about that. Her district leans heavy Democrat, but it's still heavily white: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minnesota's_5th_congressional_district

Eventually she'll have a gaff she can't escape from and she'll get tossed. Normal people would learn from all of this, but idiots like Omar or Cortez are just emboldened and double down on the stupidity.

Ocasio-Cortez, at SXSW, blasts FDR, Reagan and capitalism, says political moderates are 'meh'

By Louis Casiano

U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez slammed political moderates at the South by Southwest Conference & Festivals in Austin, Texas, calling their views “misplaced” as she defended her progressive politics in a room full of supporters.

“Moderate is not a stance. It's just an attitude towards life of, like, ‘meh,’” the New York Democrat said Saturday during an interview with Briahna Gray, senior politics editor for the Intercept. “We’ve become so cynical, that we view ‘meh,’ or ‘eh’ — we view cynicism as an intellectually superior attitude, and we view ambition as youthful naivete when ... the greatest things we have ever accomplished as a society have been ambitious acts of visions, and the ‘meh’ is just worshipped now, for what?”

The self-declared Democratic socialist also criticized the treatment of minorities throughout American history, from Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal, which she claimed was racist, to Ronald Reagan's policies, which she said "pitted" white working class people against minorities in order "to screw over all working-class Americans,” particularly African-Americans and Hispanics.

"So you think about this image of welfare queens and what he was really trying to talk about was ... this like really resentful vision of essentially black women who were doing nothing, that were 'sucks' on our country," she said.

"And it's this whole tragedy of the commons type of thinking where it's like because ... this one specific group of people, that you are already kind of subconsciously primed to resent, you give them a different reason that's not explicit racism but still rooted in a racist caricature," Ocasio-Cortez continued. "It gives people a logical reason, a 'logical' reason to say, 'Oh yeah, no, toss out the whole social safety net.'"

Other topics Ocasio-Cortez discussed included the Green New Deal and capitalism, which she said could not be redeemed because it puts profit “above everything else.”

“The most important thing is the concentration of capital, and it means that we prioritize profit and the accumulation of money above all else, and we seek it at any human and environmental cost… But when we talk about ideas like democratic socialism, it means putting democracy and society first, instead of capital first; it doesn’t mean that the actual concept of capitalistic society should be abolished,” she said.

During a Q&A session with the audience, television host and author Bill Nye the Science Guy stepped up to the microphone.

“I’m a white guy,” Nye said. “I think the problem on both sides is fear. People of my ancestry are afraid to pay for everything as immigrants come into this country. People who work at the diner in Alabama are afraid to ask for what is reasonable. So do you have a plan to work with people in Congress that are afraid? That’s what’s going on with many conservatives especially when it comes to climate change. People are afraid of what happens when we try to make these big changes.”

“One of the keys to dismantling fear is dismantling a zero-sum mentality,” Ocasio-Cortez replied. “It means the rejection outright of the logic that says someone else’s gain necessitates my loss and that my gain must necessitate someone’s loss. We can give without a take. We’re viewing progress as a loss instead of as an investment. When we choose to invest in our system, we are choosing to create wealth. When we all invest in them, then the wealth is for all of us too.”

The nine-day music and media festival has attracted many political figures this year. Several 2020 presidential candidates made appearances Saturday, including Democratic Sens. Amy Klobuchar, of Minnesota and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts. Former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, who is also considering a presidential bid, also made the pilgrimage.

Ohio's former Republican Gov. John Kasich -- a potential GOP challenger to President Trump -- also spoke at the festival Saturday.
