I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

I think that's a universal belief among everyone who doesn't like her. She sounds like a wannabe-precocious dipshit.

Tweets like these show she has the maturity of a middle schooler and the intellectual capacity of a stump:

"Gini Coefficient Appreciation Squad" is like a chemistry major saying he's part of the "Avogadro's Number Fan Club."

It's funny that people like AOC say that mediocre white men have too much confidence; she seems to have a ton of unwarranted self-assuredness that has been bolstered not by skill or intelligence but by the mere fact that she's a youngish brown woman.

"Gini Coefficient Appreciation Squad" is something I'd expect to see on the economics version of the "I Fucking Love Science" page.
I'm convinced this woman's """""economics""""" minor consisted of dozing off through micro and macro and then internalizing whatever economic concepts her polisci professor brought up in her Socialism 101 class.

Admittedly I don't have an economics degree but if I had graduated with one and left school thinking people holding multiple jobs somehow lowered the unemployment rate, I probably wouldn't brag about it quite so much

Exactly. That's what I meant by the "Avogadro's Number Fan Club." It's akin to a construction worker shouting, "Woo! 2 x 4s rule!" It's so basic and obvious as to not even be worth a mention unless you're a dingbat trying to impress completely uneducated and uninformed people.

Everything she's said related to economics has been wildly inaccurate, simplistic, or humiliatingly ridiculous. The fact that she can keep doing it with a straight face shows that she has been coddled and put on a pedestal for years for all the wrong reasons.

socialists with economics degree

I think I see your problem right here.

I have an economics degree. Any sane economics professor will make sure you know socialism is an absolutely horrid and inefficent system.

The fact she has a degree and still thinks it's even partially viable goes to show how smart she is and how much she learned.

I'm just a regular idiot, and I look at any scenario where central planning, expansive government control and metastazing bureaucracy exist, and I see nothing but constant fuck-ups.

Both in terms of policy, and the
people involved.

Seriously, anyone that's ever been to the DMV should understand that the gov't is not going to effectively organize a gangbang in a whorehouse.

Well to put it in simple terms, socialism is terrible because any couple of morons can have 10+ kids and get up to 12x the resources of a single person.

Then there's no guarantee those 10 kids will ever contribute back into the society which means it's literally throwing money away, not to mention it encourages inflation like crazy if the government is giving 100 people money and only 50 give the government their money's worth.

That leads the people that ARE contributing to feel betrayed cause their standard of living will slowly decline due to inflation , and unless there's a literal oppressive police state keeping people there, anyone who has valuable skills or talents will simply leave to go to another country where they will get paid what they are worth.

This leaves a bunch of unskilled NEETs as the overwhelmingly large majority, where the government is handing them all shittons of now worthless money cause they aren't getting their money's worth back.

Gonna have to have myself a big ol' think about that one

Edit: for clarity it's a review of an economic professor from evergreen university the most lefty uni I could think of off the top of my head.

Me Too - "Social Justice Math" - The numbers add up to THIS, but, once you check the privilege of the numbers, and re-weigh them due to rational whole numbers being oppressive in their round conformity, you can see that any fucking answer you want is retroactively correct!

So yes, the Federal Government DOES have Sixty Trillion Dollars just lying around for you to spend, no matter what the IRS says.

Pi is exactly 3 because it would be neater if it were and nobody would have to remember some boring, unending number which was probably made up by wypipo to make peoples of color feel bad about themselves anyway.

Welcome to Canada. The best of the best exiting post secondary head to the US, and have for generations. We call it "the Brain Drain". The second rung all get Gov't jobs since it pays better than the private sector and you get a pension. The rest basically go underemployed or go on welfare.

All right, that makes sense. On the one hand, I can understand some of her consternation (she mentioned that there wasn't a hearing for it and that it was "rushed to the floor"), but considering the tight time-frame that we allegedly are under, it seems like the world wouldn't have benefitted much from it not going anywhere.

The dems were selling wolf tickets, just like with the Abolish ICE thing. The plan was obviously to make Republicans look bad and scared for opposing it so they could virtue signal like crazy without actually doing anything. Dragging them kicking and screaming into a vote showed that they themselves didn't want to support it. It was "put up or shut up" and they chose shutting up because no one is dumb enough to actually vote for SJW nonsense to become real on that high of a level. That's a flaw of Social Justice, they are entirely dependent on maintaining the status quo so they can fight it, their thing is only about fighting the perceived social injustice and without that foe they're irrelevant. Just like people fighting racism, they don't want racism to end, they want to fight it so they need it. If there's not enough to go around then just fake a hate crime and organize an angry demonstration/boycott/riot or something else.

So, people are asking, how exactly can the dems say the republicans are pulling a "stunt" by forcing a vote on their own proposal? If they didn't want a vote, why propose it, right?

Well, I have firsthand experience with why that is.

The reason is that if the green new deal proposal exists, and the dems are ambiguous about their support for it, it allows the voters to make the assumptions they want to. An environmentalist type would vote democrat and assume they all agree with the spirit of the green new deal. It was just about having it there to point to, to say "If only we'd do this easy thing, all our problems would be over, but those dang dirty republicans won't let us"

Forcing a vote took that away from them. They couldn't be in a superposition of both supporting and being against the bill. Forcing a vote was the exact correct political move, so of course they're acting like it's a huge horrible thing to do and a dirty trick. But it worked, of course, nobody is fooled by them voting "present". The bill was and is absolute shit, so bad not even a single democrat would vote for it.

But yeah, I know people who unironically say "The republicans pushed a vote on this in bad faith to make the democrats look divided, so they're just trying to mess up the country even worse!" to which I responded "Then why did she propose the bill". Then it gets wishy washy and into feelings and ideas. I said "Laws aren't feelings or ideas, they are black and white, so her proposing a shit bill that nobody would vote for indicates she's bad at politics, and also bad at policy".

It doesn't matter. So many people are locked into "republicans bad", they'll eat any nonsense spin to feel like somehow, it's the republicans who are the bad guys.

Really Democrats should be grateful Yertle the Turtle rushed it to a vote. This'll mean Dem senators running for reelection in 2020 won't have footage of them trying awkwardly to defend some of the more retarded proposals in the GND in all of their opponent's campaign commercials. Though it will absolutely fuck over the presidential primary since for some unknowable reason the ENTIRE field of candidates (besides John Delaney who will probably drop out by 2020 regardless), endorsed the deal.
