I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

You know, if I were a Republican who gave a shit about the environment and also wanted to rack up a bunch of political points, I'd create a bill called the "Better than AOC's 'Green New Deal' Act" and fill it with sensible things like subsidies for nuclear energy and nuclear research, tariffs on goods from high polluting countries like China, and a carbon tax and dividend scheme (which is the most broadly supported climate change policy among economists and scientists), then watch the Dems shriek over it and be forced to vote No and betray their base or vote Yes and take a dump on AOC.

I completely agree that this should happen, and I think should happen as soon as possible. Considering the tight time-frame that we evidently are operating under, I think it would be considered a reasonable step forward by the Democrats toward alleviating climate change woes, After all, some binding legislation (as compared to non-binding legislation that could not concretely bring about any policy changes) would be far more appropriate for our worrying situation. Pa'lante and all that jazz!

She sure lays on the emotional manipulation heavily in this clip. You know, I might have been inclined to agree with her about making things more “green”, but her GND is just exceptional. Her goals are unrealistic and no amount of sob stories will make it happen. I’m glad nobody voted in favor of the GND and the saltiness from Ocasio-Cortez makes it even better. She is an example for why we shouldn’t have super young Congress members.

between pelosi and waters, the dems also show why we shouldn't have super old congress members either

We have a carbon tax in Canada. All it is is a cash-grab for the government. Get that shit out of here.

AOC is old, though. In Canada, we have fucking 19 year olds in Parliament.

Can someone please explain to me what urban air pollution and a shitty city in Michigan being too incompetent to make their water potable have to do with proposing the government provide free higher education, a house, and a job to every citizen?

Flint's an especially terrible example because it's a clear case of a government being too incompetent to provide for its citizens, when basically every proposal in the GND is to make a government program to provide for the citizenry.

At this point, Flint is just a buzzword.

Hahah, that's funny, I always wondered exactly how long a cubit was supposed to be. Yeah, no good having ol' stubby arms doing the cubitting on one side, and lanky jones on the other.

One last derail about the cubit.
The cubit have suffered from inflation over the years among some crazy people that believes Jesus and dinosaurs co-existed. See, Noah's Ark was measured in cubits and as more and more animals were discovered in modern times it started to seem like it was too small a boat, so the cubit had to became longer to accommodate the increasing number of passengers but without actually changing the specified measurements. When that become too ridiculous, the ark was already absurdly huge, it was time for some aggressive animal-compression where similar species like wolves, dogs, dingos and coyote were packed into the ur-dog that later unpacked itself into all the different canines we have today through a process that is absolutely nothing like evolution. Same thing was done to every other animal, why have panthers and jaguars when they're the same animal in different livery? COMPRESSED!

The idea behind it is that marginalized communities are more likely to feel the most adverse effects of climate change and pollution - they are, for example, more popular locations for hazardous waste sites. She was trying to draw upon that connection while utilizing better-known examples of poorer communities impacted by unclean water and air pollution, but, like when she invoked the Sutherland Springs shooting while advocating against firearms, ran the risk of oversimplifying the realities on the ground in those specific cases. The immediate question: what would a nonbinding resolution do to alleviate those problems, considering that Flint's had this crisis occurring for... five years now?

She's upset that what amounts to a Christmas wish list got rejected? And the media white knighting that this somehow isn't a disaster has been hilarious.

- The Republicans are voting on something just so they can vote no!

- It was only a non-binding resolution, even if it passed it would do nothing! It was purely symbolic!

-At least she wants to help/inspire!

- She got no votes because the Dems clearly saw this for the awful racist sexist act as it was and abstained!

As an American, I can't just waltz my fat ass into Canada and stay there indefinitely and use their healthcare and housing services without contributing a dime, either. Borders and legal immigration are so fucking hateful!

Surely there's context that the media is willfullying ignoring and not showing us.

Border hits ‘breaking point’ in El Paso, CBP commissioner says
By Louis Casiano | Fox News

The nation’s top border security official said Wednesday that the border is at its "breaking point" during a visit to Texas, where as many as 1,000 migrants crossed into the U.S. and there are not enough agents to respond.

"That breaking point has arrived this week at our border," U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin K. McAleenan said along the border. "CBP is facing an unprecedented humanitarian and border security crisis all along our Southwest border, and nowhere has that crisis manifested more acutely than here in El Paso."

McAleenan said the Border Patrol is on pace for over 100,000 apprehensions and encounters with migrants – mostly from Central America seeking asylum in the U.S. On Monday, agents encountered an estimated 4,000 migrants border-wide, he said.

In February, more than 76,000 migrants were detained, the highest number in 12 years. That figure includes more than 7,000 unaccompanied children. More than 36,000 migrant families have arrived in the El Paso region in fiscal year 2019 compared with about 2,000 at the same time last year, according to CBP data, the El Paso Times reported. The influx is posing new challenges for border agents.

Some arrive with viruses, such as the flu or chickenpox, and others with injuries. McAleenan said crowded detention centers could worsen the situation.

"We are doing everything we can to simply avoid a tragedy in a CBP facility," he said. "But with these numbers, with the types of illnesses we're seeing at the border, I fear that it's just a matter of time."

About 750 border agents have been reassigned from other ports to El Paso and highway security checkpoints in West Texas and New Mexico will temporarily shut down. The reassignments could mean longer wait times at border crossings and may affect trade between the U.S. and Mexico as fewer agents will be available to inspect cargo and normal border traffic.

Immigration-rights advocates have called the situation along the border a humanitarian crisis. They push back at President Trump's national emergency declaration to fund his long-promised border wall. The Pentagon on Monday, authorized the transfer of $1 billion to erect 57 miles of "pedestrian fencing" along the border.

"There is no need for a national emergency, no need for costly and ineffective walls, or programs that criminalize and dehumanize asylum seekers," Fernando Garcia, executive director of the Border Network for Human Rights, said in a statement to the Dallas Morning News.

McAleenan said the only solution is for Congress to act.

"Legislative relief, changes in the law and closing the vulnerabilities in our legal framework is the only way this flow is going to be reduced and we're going to be able to restore integrity to our immigration system," he said.

Keep in mind that there's no emergency at the border and the concerns about migrant caravans were just right wing, xenophobic fear mongering. It's infuriating.

Yes you can.
