I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

Goddamnit guys, I come here to laugh at AOC’s antics, not about lab-grown meat and thorium reactors. Move that discussion elsewhere, plz. Thx.

The one genuine strength that the DNC has always held over the Republicans was that Democrats always walked in a virtually-perfect "lockstep" with each other. AOC is apparently hell-bent on destroying that, and if even if she already painted a target on her back with how she's behaved so far, the target just got 10 feet wider.

Her biggest problems aren't going to come from across the aisle, they're going to come from her own party working as hard as they can to shove her back behind that bar where she came from.

If she didn't threaten to primary people she didn't like, they wouldn't need to make this rule.

You aren't going to replace the grain belt with metal sheds with grow lights. One little bit of stem rust gets in there and you are done. It gets into the soil, the beds, the walls. Knock it the fuck down and start over.
He is just stupid. You dont use this kind of gear for grains or Potatoes. Its a nice way of getting fresh stuff all year long and Perfect for Salad and stuff like that(quality goes way up and the costs dont increase much since you can grow them right inside population centres for Daily consumption).

The Green new deal has nothing to do with stuff liek that since its not organic or Socialist.

I hate the fact that if you follow anyone even slightly Left or Progressive on Twitter they always re-tweet this bitch. :(

Is that a strength? I mean it secured Hillary the nomination and I don't think anyone considers that a big win for the party.

I think any democrat should be happy about increasing intra-party freedom.

I know it's for market gardeners. Idiot city people think they are the same thing as farmers. That's also why they buy into the organic "multiculture" horseshit. But they are the closest thing to a farmer that they will ever meet, they say they are a "farmers", and they have allllll of these interesting things to say about agriculture (that totally isn't just them spinning a yarn for marketing purposes).

What is it about leaky reactors and teeth mutation? Same thing happened to Jimmy Carter....

At risk of increasing the spergy sidetracks in this topic, Jimmy Carter never actually made it to a nuclear submarine - he served for a short time on a diesel sub and was then selected for nuclear training, but his father died so he was given a hardship discharge to manage his family's peanut farm (really).

Anyhow we now return to our regularly scheduled programming discussing

It's weird to see people say this now, for years I've always thought it was the republicans who were much better at circling the wagons. Seemed more like the democrats have been tearing into each other well before Hillary went full abuela and fully opened the floodgates on identitarianism.

I think if you look at local/state level politics, the DNC is better but at the national level the current yellow journalism has exposed both the DNC and the RNC for the clown companies that they are.

Many people are starting to feel the fallout from the identity politics they so fiercely championed, balkanization is always a bad idea and when mixed with social justice things get straight up retarded. Remember that black people don't have to go vegetarian/vegan because that's white peoples food, they can agree that everyone else should become vegans to help the environment though. Isn't that a bit weird. It's not an isolated thing though, it's spreading and everyone that can uses that loophole to exempt themselves and put the burden on everyone else. "Rules for thee but not for me" have now been codified in the social justice and identity politics circles. It's so dumb, at least the more sensible people are growing tired of it.

The RNC was much more lockstep in the 90s and 2000s. Bookended between when Pat Buchanan got purged and when teabaggers started primarying moderates in 2010-2014.

The DNC was always going to unravel because the party is nothing more than aggrieved interest groups vying for the “Most Oppressed” award. White women and gays, the winners of yesteryear, are now getting the boot. Blacks are getting driven out of cities now populated by Hispanics. Chinks are trying to get their piece of the pie but are getting raughed off as Honorary Whites. It’s a giant shit show of their own making and I’m loving every minute of it :story:

I'm still completely baffled that Hillary did this. Her history does not, in ANY way, jive with identity politics. In the past, she declined to support gay people and said things about minorities that would make Current Year types melt into a puddle. She didn't need to do anything to keep hard liberal votes, Trump triggered them into fits. But identity politics is fucking vote poison to middle of the road people.

If she didn't engage in identity politics and never tried the "basket of deplorables" line, I think she'd be shitting up the presidency right now. That's exactly what opened the door for Trump to tell people that she's an out of touch elitist that doesn't give a fuck about them. Though I couldn't be happier she found a way to lose an election that was gifted to her from the start.

She didn't need to do anything to keep hard liberal votes,

Hillary had a hard time wrangling minority voters, and she probably thought tossing some idpol scraps their way was a way to get them on board. Little did she realize that you can't condition your base to hate white people and then expect them to be enthusiastic about an old rich white lady running for president.

Say what you will about Jimmy Carter, but he's a good man to have in your canoe if you're ever attacked by a vicious swimming rabbit.

Both the DNC and the RNC are actively harmful to the American people and much as I dislike AOC's actual policies I think the fact that she's able to piss off the DNC so much is a good thing and will hopefully break their stranglehold over the party.
