I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

Her entire complaint shows that she doesn't understand why people use public transit. I've lived in a city with one of the biggest and most expansive public transit systems in the world (and rapidly growing to this day) and people who have to commute generally think of things more like:
  • how many cheap neighborhoods does this service so I don't have to pay downtown city housing costs?
  • how many different ways are there to get around the city when i need to run errands?
  • how often does it get me to work on time?
  • what is the cheapest monthly bill if i take it every day for work?
  • can i read a book or watch a movie on my phone while i'm stuffed in a car/bus for over an hour?
  • what is the likelihood of me getting robbed?
  • how much human excrement covers the seats on the average day?
I really don't think a commuter is rreally putting "what is sunday traffic like?" at the top of their concerns. NYC may be a dirty transit system, but that's because the entire city is disgustingly dirty. SF had a decent transit system until the volume of homeless people shitting up the machinery literally takes parts of the system out of service, but in general anything "public" in SF is going to be covered in human excrement pretty quickly. Chicago can't figure out how to fund anything but the transit is reliable as long as you know how not to get shot in chicago.

I don't know anyone who likes DC's transit- not visitors, not locals. This dummy is putting champaign socialism under the limelight better than anything Fox news could have designed.

the only good thing about the DC metro is that it is adequately air conditioned so you are not boiled to death while trapped in a tin can for 40+ min track/maintenance delay.

So she supposedly wants people to go green but then does this whole thing of saying "lol I can't believe anyone uses the New York public transit it suuuuuuuuuuucks amirite girlfrans?"

So the DC Metro, in AOC's opinion, is way better than the NYC subway despite WMATA closing sections for weeks at a time and delays, to the point the people of DC avoid it due to unreliability. Not to mention NYC has a population of 8 milion plus while DC barely breaks 700,000. The NYC subway runs 24/7 while the DC Metro doesn't. Oh and it's brand spanking new while the NYC subway system is over a hundred years old.

I bitch about the subway too and the Mexico City subway system is pretty cool too except it doesn't run all night and there are separate cars for men and ladies at night and it's in Mexico City. Say what you will about the subway but it runs all night, doesn't have zoned fares and is probably the most reliable transit system in the USA given that it moves millions every day.

Maybe this thot should worry less about DC and more about NYC, the Bronx and whatever idiotic section of Queens voted for her.
She does have a point, the DC metro is pretty good.

But of course the DC metro runs better than the NYC metro, it's mostly yuppies from the suburbs taking it in and out. You don't nearly have as many vagrants hanging around it as you do in NYC. DC's going to pump an absolutely stupid amount of money into it as a result.

I lived in Mexico City for a year and their subway is comparable to NYC's due to the sprawling size of the place and its a much more modern system that also moves millions a day. One station cut through an old Aztec pyramid ruin so it was enclosed in plexiglass so you could see archaeologists excavating it and everyone got to their destination. It was heavily subsidized and was extremely affordable and surprisingly clean. But at night men and women were separated due to the men getting grabby with women and it didn't run all night. Things may have changed since this was nearly 20 years ago but if NYC put as much into the subway as Mexico City does with theirs ours would be top of the line.

But Mexico City has tons of very poor people from all over the country pouring into the capital as well as foreign business people so they need to keep it clean and running. The MTA just doesn't give a shit and is bloated beyond belief.; secretaries make 60K and up at the MTA whereas a track worker gets a little over half that. AOC wasn't elected to gush over the DC Metro, she's paid to represent the folks who put her in office who want the MTA to stop dicking around and fix the NYC subway system.

tl;dr yeah OK the DC metro is nice and so are others but STFU cunt and work on shit that matters to the people that put you in office.

Based on her comments, AOC has never actually taken MTA in a long time NYC's subway system is surprisingly effective, even at peak hours

I swear it's like she's a plant by the GoP or some shit, she's literally unbelievably stupid.

Also I wouldn't get on a metro anyway because I don't like going underground, so it's neat learning about different metros.

It's almost like she never took public transportation and was chauffeured everywhere instead. Strange, that.

Or, alternatively, it's like taking the DC Metro during the day as a sitting congressman is a lot easier/safer than the NYC Subway at night as a fucking bartender.

NYC's Mayor Bloomberg would pull that shit all the time. "The Subway is safe, I take it to work every day", yeah of course it's safe when you're on it at 7AM with 20 NYPD Lieutenants.

Things may have changed since this was nearly 20 years ago but if NYC put as much into the subway as Mexico City does with theirs ours would be top of the line.
I think you forget how insanely expensive it is to do major infrastructure projects in New York. Both the city and the state. No way anything major gets done without essentially buying off 50% plus one of the population with gibs.

OK that may be so but given the insane salaries at the MTA and the skim NY State & the MTA still have enough to pay for basic maintenance, they choose not to until its a emergency.

Welcome to Civil Service Grifting 101. Blow the budget surplus on frivolous bureaucratic bullshit at the end of the fiscal year rather than long term upkeep of infrastructure. Then when shit eventually fails due to lack of maintenance appeal for "temporary" "emergency" funding. Ta-da! Larger budgets! More staff! More bureaucracy!

Repeat.

Democracy is the only way we can easily see how stupid these people are and laugh at them. If this moron got high in The Party by sucking cock and ended up in a position of power in a tyranny we wouldn't know and there'd be nothing we could do anyway.

The internet is rapidly taking us back to the roots of democracy, where everyone that was involved had to actually get out in the public square and be heard, and everyone knew who they were and how they were exceptional. Only this time we have the rights of man and not just a bunch of Greek pedos voting on who to genocide. It's good times for the human race really.

I meant it ironically of course. I stand by what Winston Churchill said. "Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time."
I'm an avid supporter of representational democracy, and firmly support the freedoms that a lot of people like Cortez would want to take away from the average person.

Also like you said it's great to be able to laugh at the stupidity of these people, my only wish is that they weren't put into positions of power where they can actually try to enact their wishes.

you got to consider her constituents. She isn't going to communicate well with her electorate by using big words. Her yeeking and oooking in "southern negro" accent works well.

Some of her constituents are complaining that she's been ignoring their requests for meetings and that her office basically amounts to a voicemail and mailbox redirecting everything to the circular file.

Her performance is for the national audience of woke people and the media, which is why it's dumbed down and incredibly pandering.

Don't believe this girl gives a flying fuck about her constituents. She just wants to play "Congresswoman", not really do the job. If AOC really wanted to make her mark in Congress, ensuring re-elections, she'd be listening more and babbling much less. She'd have at least one office open to serve constituents. She'd have periodic "town halls" back home to listen to people's thoughts, ideas, and questions. She'd be making contacts on both sides of the aisle. Bet a new member can learn a lot from Congresspeople who have been there for a while, and bet such people are willing to help, whether she's of their party or not. AOC would periodically meet with her state's Senators, learn from them, maybe coordinate positions on issues. AOC would be quietly visiting Cabinet Secretaries, to introduce herself and make connections to be used when a constituent needs help. At least that's how I would do it. Not rocket science. Just common sense.

If you are willing to work and learn, have some common sense, and are reasonably affable you can be a successful Congressperson or Senator, one who will be taken seriously. AOC's just playing "Congresswoman", and in doing so has made a fool of herself and done a serious disservice to her constituents and the nation.

I've never used NYC's subway because Manhattan is so fucking tiny there's really no point to it as a tourist, but I was really unimpressed with DC's subway system. Its expensive. The lines fucking zig zag so if you want to go, say due EAST, you have to switch lines. And the connections are inconvenient (mainly because of all the zig zagging, so you end up having to go three extra stops to make a connection than you would if the lines ran straight).

DC vs. Manhattan subway maps:

Yeah, many years ago when living in Maryland we'd drive to the New Carrollton station and get off near the White House. National Mall close by, everything you'd want to see. Easy on, easy off, saved driving in DC.

AOC is Brianna Wu, but way more gulag-y.

Did someone mention that the guy who is funding her wears a t-shirt of a Nazi supporter?

That's pretty fucking strange. Bose and Savitri Devi might be the two recognizable names connected to India and Nazi's during WW2, at least in my mind and even then Devi is much more obscure. It can't be a whoopsie.

India and Hitler can be a bit weird but Chakrabarti is born in the US so he doesn't have the benefit of the geographical and cultural distance that blurs the context of who the Nazi's were and what they were up to.
