I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

Not so sure about that one; Illinois doesn't have sharia courts and its politicians only speak american languages: english and black.
Most of Illinois is just bog standard Midwest and therefore is pretty inoffensive. It just so happens that Chicago is such an unbelievable shithole that it cancels out the rest of the State.
Minnesota is pretty bad I'll admit but I hold Illinois to be the worse of the two because at least Minnesota is capable of changing for the better. Illinois/Chicago OTOH will never get better no matter how bad things get like the Midwestern California it is.
Downstate Illinois needs to just break off already and leave Chicago to its fate.

Pelosi rips AOC, says her posse in Congress is ‘like five people’

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi just sent some more shade to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

In a “60 Minutes” interview, correspondent Lesley Stahl pointed out the different groups within the House Democratic caucus. “You have these wings — AOC and her group on one side,” Stahl said.

“That’s like five people,” Pelosi interrupted.

Stahl corrected the snarky remark, saying that the “progressive group is more than five.”

“Well, I’m progressive — I’m a progressive, yeah,” Pelosi responded.

The Congressional Progressive Caucus has 98 members and is the second largest group of Democrats in the Congress. Ocasio-Cortez is one of the group’s most recognizable freshman members.

Seven Democratic House members, including Ocasio-Cortez, are supported by the progressive political action committee the Justice Democrats, which Pelosi could also have been referring to.

On several occasions now, Pelosi has downplayed any splits within her ranks — and also tried to dim some of Ocasio-Cortez’s star power.

In a recent interview with USA Today, the House speaker pointed out that votes are more significant than Twitter followers — a remark that was also interpreted to be a dig at AOC.

“While there are people who have a large number of Twitter followers, what’s important is that we have a large number of votes on the floor of the House,” Pelosi said.

On “60 Minutes” Pelosi said her Democrats weren’t fractured by those loud voices on the left.

“By and large, whatever orientation they came to Congress with, they know that we have to hold the center. That we have to … go down the mainstream,” Pelosi said.

When asked by Stahl if they really know that, Pelosi answered in the affirmative.

“They do,” she said.

I'd recirculate that memo about trying to keep the centre if I were you.

This election is going to be fucking amazeballs. I'm curious how many of the dozen or so Dems currently in office are going to try and keep their congressional seats while still running for President, and then how many of those will wind up with AOC's little socialist gang trying to primary them at the same time, forcing them to simultaneously defend their current office as well as run for President (which most of them know they have no real hope for and are just trying to make some bux off of). Either way the snippy passive aggressive infighting is going to explode into all-out war at some point and it will just be hilarious.

Yeah. If an establishment candidate like Biden wins progressives will refuse to vote for him because he doesn't pass the purity test and if a progressive candidate like Bernie wins moderates will refuse to vote for what is essentially a socialist.

I mean there's no "essentially" about it, Bernie openly identifies as a socialist. Which makes it more hilarious that he's desperate to avoid having his "medicare for all" plan labeled as socialism... even the open socialists don't want to own their socialist programs.

Thanks, Snopes. I never would have guessed that this article from the satirical website Babylon Bee was satirical without your help. Kudos to Babylon Bee, though, that's actually a pretty damn good Photoshop.

Re: Fraulein Omar, her death threats and vulgar self-victimization, apparently she's suddenly pulling in record amounts of donations... it's like we've seen this thing before...

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez quits Facebook, says social media is a health risk

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said she's quit Facebook even though the social media site was an important tool for her 2018 campaign.

In an hour-long interview on Yahoo News podcast Skullduggery, the 29-year-old New York Democrat said social media poses a public health risk to everybody.

"I personally gave up Facebook, which was kind of a big deal because I started my campaign on Facebook. And Facebook was my primary digital organizing tool for a very long time. I gave up on it. We still sort of have accounts on it," Ocasio-Cortez told hosts Michael Isikoff and Daniel Klaidman in the podcast published Monday.

Ocasio-Cortez said while screen time is particularly dangerous for children under three years of age, older people see negative effects like escapism and addiction. The congresswoman said she's tried to establish social media rules for herself and set time limits on her Twitter and Instagram.

"Like every once in a while, you'll see me hop on Twitter on the weekends, but for the most part ... when it comes to consumption and reading, I take the weekends off," she said.

Ocasio-Cortez joined the podcast to talk about the 2020 presidential candidates, how her term is going, President Donald Trump, Game of Thrones and more.

Ocasio-Cortez's office didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

"I gave up on it. We still sort of have accounts on it." "You'll see me hop on Twitter on the weekends, but for the most part ... when it comes to consumption and reading, I take the weekends off."

Nice sentiment, but kind of bullshit when you dig a little deeper.

So, the first of many "I'm leaving the internet forever!" declarations, hoping the "trolls" take her at her word and leave her alone when she "quietly" pops back up in 4 days to a week?

It's 2019, how can people STILL not know how to internets?

Well, she does teach other congressmen how to use Twitter for maximum benefit.

She also thought they could delete their green new deal after it was so dumb and shit, not realizing people archive everything.
