I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

The great hope of the American left is celebrated in art

In an old 17th century palace, a colorful group exhibition with young artists from Los Angeles, multicultural and motley as the city itself is currently being shown. A politically charged allegory of the future of the Democratic Party draws its eyes.

It is almost always enriching to see something completely unexpected in the art route, provided that the quality holds. And what can be more surprising than a celebration portrait of a young politician? Eye-catching in a group exhibition of six young artists from Los Angeles in the midst of the Donald Trump era, a painting of a woman strikingly resembles Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, of course, in November, a member of the Democratic Party.

The woman in blue trousers and red shirt takes a big step towards the left in Justin John Greene's painting "Deposition". In English, "deposit" means depositing someone. And that's exactly what Ocasio-Cortez, at not yet full 30 elected in the US House of Representatives, wants to do: set aside and replace the old scheme of "The green new deal", a comprehensive plan to tackle climate change.

Greene (born 1984) has filled his painting to the breadth of symbols. The left half of the picture is red as Ocasio-Cortez's political appearance in the Democrats' left wing. With the help of a thick rope the woman carries a burden on her back, an up and down long-haired man with a guitar. According to the artist himself, he stands for the party establishment with roots in the youth culture of the 1970s. The new generation enters, the old one is worn out. She leads a donkey after her, the party's totem animal (Republican is an elephant) that she enters into the future. Especially in Easter time, it is easy to see the recording of the animal that carried Jesus into Jerusalem on the Palm Sunday. The Savior Comes!

I suppose you could call that art in the same way that the shit covered walls of an autist who uses his feces as a crayon could be construed as art.

This no-talent soulless dreck is depressing. It feels like we're in some kind of artistic dark age and don't have painters on the same level as Rembrandt, Monet, etc. that will be admired by future generations. The only person I can think of today that might have any kind of relevance in the future is Banksy, but I wouldn't call him a painter in the traditional sense.

We have thousands of painters capable of that kind of art, they just don't receive a lot of attention for it because a lot of people consider anything too realist or representational to be boring, or is better handled by photography, and there aren't enough rich people sitting for portraits for anyone to make their living like that any more. The people that can paint like Rembrandt probably have to get their paycheck making something else.

Even though it's just a pastiche, I like the painting. It shows the minimal amount of skill and effort that most leftist art lacks.

I do like how he included all this symbolism but in the end it's Frida Kahlo hauling a donkey and a sleepy Mexican up some stairs. Might as well paint in the Frito Bandito.

The cult of personality surrounding politicians like Trump and AOC frightens me. This is not a path we should so proudly be marching down.

That's a violation of 4 U.S. Code § 8 - Respect for Flag (b) and 4 U.S. Code § 8 - Respect for Flag (d) and I'm not sure why I know that off the top of my head. I'm always amused by how often these patriotic depictions violate flag codes, though. There's a palpable irony to it.

What in the world? Did she sign off on this? It's so incredibly weird, especially considering Wonder Woman's checkered history as a semi-subtle fetish icon. Or I guess you can go with more contemporary depictions of Wonder Woman as portrayed by a former IDF soldier, but I'm not sure how much Tlaib and Omar would like that interpretation.
