I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

Her initials are AOC because she has the brain of, at most, an 18 year old.

Gilead Sciences literally just pledged a donation of this drug--for literally free--for the uninsured through the CDC. That means, literally, hundreds of thousands of high-risk poor people (and let's be frank, they're mostly gays and trannies) are now going to get this for free. And she's pissed off because...Gilead Sciences isn't bankrupting itself?

The reality is, this donation was secured by the Trump Administration, and she simply can't bear to believe that he did something for one of the Democrats' dependent groups that she hasn't. She's panicking in her desperation to save face, so she's essentially trailing behind Trump, sniffing and griping that "you should've done it long ago, you greedy assholes".

This is how you ensure that companies don't do things like this, Occasional-Cortex. Just sayin'.

Truvada isn't the first HIV-related drug with this setup. The drug treatment for taxoplasmosis got a lot of attention when "pharmabro" Martin Shkreli bought the rights to the drug and then hiked the price around 5000%; my understanding was that anyone who needed the very rarely used drug and didn't have insurance would get it for free through some program or another. The usual goal seems to be to stiff insurance, not those would actually be dying from it. For all that AOC claims that people are dying because of truvada, she sure didn't bother providing any evidence.

Truvada is used in some cocktails to treat HIV to "undetectable" levels, but is more often used by HIV negative gay men as HIV prophylaxis. I sincerely doubt people are dying because they can't get access to it, it's very easy to get, a lot of different insurance plans cover it, and Gilead itself has offered the first year free for some time- just gotta sign up for the program through your pharmacy.

I dont know how you boomers do it but I've seen high school kids take 10 seconds to read a word at a time out loud.
Not a boomer, and I would always be around kids that could barely read.

I suppose I'm priveliged because I was homeschooled for my early years and I had a religious upbringing that had heavy emphasis on reading the texts as a family.

"I think it's important here that we notice that we the public, we the people, developed this drug. We paid for this drug, we lead and developed all the patents to create Prep and then that patent has been privatized despite the fact that the patent is owned by the public, who refused to enforce it," Ocasio-Cortez said.

Funny, I didn't see "the people" working in labs and going through the time and expense to develop and test it. I'm pretty sure that was all done by scientists working for a private company.

She might be talking about subsidies, but even then it's a weak argument. Just stop giving subsidies out, stop with arduous FDA trials (especially for drugs in use in other first world countries).

  • People put money into something.
  • This means the public owns it.
  • Therefore, the public owns everything in a capitalist society. 🤔

Others have said this chick is basically the Left's version of Sarah Palin.

Makes me wonder what's she's going to do once Trump's gone and the DNC gets bored with her.

Somehow I doubt she's going to just go quietly to Alaska like Palin did.

I hope she doesn't. I hope she sticks around a long ass time to serve as a reminder to everyone what the Democratic Party has become.

She is one of the best things Trump, and the Republicans, could hope for.

You know what, let this happen, let them think that and pass a law or some kind of legal thing to enforce it.

It will make dismantling the big tech companies all the more easier when the time comes.

"What if, like, all medicine was like a dollar, for totally everyone? And they'll have to do it because it's the law?"

Saraha Palin Actually had Children and she managed to be reelected in Alaska. Occasio turned her entire BRIGHT BLUE DEMOCRATIC District against her IN 6 SIX MONTHS. SHE IS FASTER THAN FUCKING BLITZKRIEG. THIS IS EQUIVALENT OF RUSSIANS LOSING WHILE RUSSIAN WINTER IS PRESENT.

"What if, like, all medicine was like a dollar, for totally everyone? And they'll have to do it because it's the law?"
Anything that makes medicine cheaper is generally good, and the fact that so much of medical care is profit motivated is, at best, a necessary evil.

Doesn’t make her solutions less retarded.

On this topic, someone tried to convince me that socialized health care was possible because it worked in the military.

I was like, nigger, there's, like, an order of magnitude less people in the military than there are in Los Angeles, unless you're fine with your taxes going up by 3000% there is no way we could ever have socialized health care in this country. It's a logistical nightmare.

Also, calling it working is delusional at best, unless you're not talking about the VA.

Not only that, but even if the military had amazing healthcare (it doesn't) - it's still a mostly young group with mandatory adherense to fitness and wellbeing that in no actual way represents the general population.

Even with all of the changes and mandates to the military, at the absolute worst an american soldier has a 10% chance to be obese. The average american citizen has a 40% chance (or is 4 times more likely). Multiply this across all health issues and you can imagine how out of hand this would get in short order.
