I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

Not only that, but even if the military had amazing healthcare (it doesn't) - it's still a mostly young group with mandatory adherense to fitness and wellbeing that in no actual way represents the general population.

Even with all of the changes and mandates to the military, at the absolute worst an american soldier has a 10% chance to be obese. The average american citizen has a 40% chance (or is 4 times more likely). Multiply this across all health issues and you can imagine how out of hand this would get in short order.
Another big thing to remember is also that preventative medical treatment is mandatory in the military. It's not optional all your medical readiness categories will be kept up to date.

Anything that makes medicine cheaper is generally good, and the fact that so much of medical care is profit motivated is, at best, a necessary evil.

Doesn’t make her solutions less exceptional.

The west offsets the cost of medicine in third world countries. People were up in arms over a hep-b medicine costing $20k in the US but $4 in India and HIV meds are given away for free in Africa. Why are these drugs so cheap or even free in poor areas where they spread like wildfire?

You'd think people like AOC would be dancing with joy over this practice. Problem is, they just don't understand what is going on and have little incentive to find out.

On this topic, someone tried to convince me that socialized health care was possible because it worked in the military.

I was like, nigger, there's, like, an order of magnitude less people in the military than there are in Los Angeles, unless you're fine with your taxes going up by 3000% there is no way we could ever have socialized health care in this country. It's a logistical nightmare.
We would actually need to create a class system like Brave New World with a dash of Punisher 2099. It'd be based on money and merit of a person to keep it possible.

"I think it's important here that we notice that we the public, we the people, developed this drug. We paid for this drug, we lead and developed all the patents to create Prep and then that patent has been privatized despite the fact that the patent is owned by the public, who refused to enforce it," Ocasio-Cortez said.

Funny, I didn't see "the people" working in labs and going through the time and expense to develop and test it. I'm pretty sure that was all done by scientists working for a private company.

It's like she's trying to replicate Obama's "you didn't build that" moment, except she doesn't realize how mad that made everyone who has built something.

Remember, she allegedly studied economics.

Remember, she allegedly studied economics.

That "allegedly" is important.

There's a new "Don't Walk, Run!" video where AOC goes on about banking and interest rates, something related to her studies.
I think they're pretty funny videos but I'll put it in a spoiler.

I just don't understand why they put a big ol' "A" on her chest. Maybe they never read Hawthorne, but it's hilarious to those of us who have, tbh.
When it was originally posted someone commented on both how out of place it looked stylistically and that I personally thought that even the coloring/shading looks really off like it was an afterthought, or possibly added by another artist all together. They posited that someone REEEd about titty cleavage so they just stuck something in front of it. I think they were on to something.

I still can't wrap my head around this.
You know lots of people "studied" law and medicine and washed out. It's the same as guys who attempt to join special forces and wash out. All that means is they attempted something. Did she actually get a degree? If she did, C's get degrees.

Yeah, she somehow got a degree. She allegedly graduated cum laude, which does allow for some C's. She thought that she was going to pursue a STEM degree but couldn't handle it (shocking) and then turned to international relations and econ.

I'm not convinced she took more than four econ courses at BU, not even enough for a minor at most schools, since I think econ was her concentration within the international relations major and not a separate major itself. But if she's going to tout her education, it would still be nice for her to have a rudimentary understanding of foundational economic principles. She's a fraud.

LOL it's like Che Guevara's likeness on t-shirts that sell for *GASP* money!!! Capitalism wins, flawless victory!!!!

School standards aren't as strict as before.

Wikipedia used to say she minored in econ, but now it says she double majored in econ and international relations. I’d like to see evidence either way. International relations is a bullshit degree, so, if that’s what she actually majored in, it makes sense she was working as a bartender straight out of college, but I’m skeptical she couldn’t find a white collar job with an econ degree.

The bid's up to $310 now.

On a related note, there's some vintage spank material that's going for a fraction of the cost. And the best part is, it features a woman whose teeth are less likely to shear the skin off your penis.
