I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

I generally don't want more Democrats in the house, but I really want to see her deep sixed by a blue type who understands his or her job on a fundamental level

That was who she displaced to get where she was, basically by shrieking that he wasn't far left and shrieky enough. In essence that he spent more time doing his job and even occasionally compromising with THE EVIL REPUBLINAZIS than telling everyone to stay woke on twitter. Now the constituents have learned the mistake they made. I'm not sure if the guy's even gonna run against her again or if he's decided to let them sleep in the bed they've made, but there's actually a decent chance she might lose to the Republican woman challenging her, especially if the challenger is enough of a Blue State Republican.

I miss having Thomas Wictor on Twitter. He was like the perfect blend of crazy and brilliant.

AOC. Is hands down my favorite democrat.

This crazy biddy is the gift that just keeps on giving.

Remind me to donate to her re-election fund.

I've said it before but it really seems like so many politicians treat New York as nothing more than a rung on the ladder for their greedy ambitions. Mayor, senator, representative, doesn't matter. They trick the people of the city into voting them in so that they can get the national spotlight and watch the money roll in.

I'd feel worse about it but honestly a lot of New York City's residents probably feel like it's their mandate to lord over the rest of the country too so it's not like this isn't what they asked for.

If she loses reelection, watch her effortlessy switch gears to confirm that "I didn't lose, I just decided to not campaign really hard because, honestly, there wasn't much I could do being pigeon-holed in the House, you saw how everyone around me just voted me down? It was a dead-end. I didn't have bad ideas, the small minded racist patriarchy boxed me in! Lose? No, I didn't lose, I was subverted. What I really need, and I'm sure the public will support me in getting, is even MORE power to make things my way, so, Governor/Senator here I come!"

Possibly :optimistic: but I think she's doomed to failure there. Her constituency was willing to vote for her #wokeness for the House because, let's face it, it's probably the federal elected position that matters the least. I think even some of the more hardcore tumblristas might balk a little at the thought of giving her the amount of local-based power that came even from being mayor, let alone governor.

I know it's giving a lot of credit that's almost certainly not due, but I have to believe that there's at least some point where even the shriekiest reeeesister might stop and go "Wait, is this too far?"

So, here's a thunk I had last night.

You know how lottery winners, particularly those "rags to riches" ones, tend to go broke really quickly, because they have no idea what money is worth, how to budget, etc?

Well... We know what a congress person makes. We can guesstimate pretty close what her rent costs. We know she's been buying stuff left and right - furniture, clothes (she never seems to wear the same piece of clothing twice), etc.

We also know she's been saying she's "broke" and she was bitching that congress needs a pay raise.

... Just how far in debt do you figure she is?

Hm. Maybe fairly deep, actually, come to think of it.

I was going to say that even a complete idiot can get rich by embezzling and taking bribes like it's going out of style, just look at Maxine Waters. But Waters has had a long time in office to build up that reserve of illegal kickbacks and slushed funds, time AOC hasn't had and won't have.

It's probably more of a question of whether anyone was stupid enough to think she was worth bribing right away. Considering that her demand for a pay raise was also a not so subtle demand for bribes ("If they don't pay me more, I'll basically be forced to take bribes from lobbyists and activists to get by! HINT HINT!"), I'd bet probably not.

I am hoping for an MC hammer level downfall, myself.

I don't think she'd have an easy time selling her pussy. She's fugly; her fanboys are all just subs allured by her status.

Frankly at this point I have more respect for the idiots that thirst after Moomoo, at least that fat bitch never fucked up a city-level deal that lost a bunch of people job opportunities.

Is there a middle ground between "the detention centers are absolutely fine and if you care about the kids in them you're a stupid libtard" and "this is LITERALLY Nazi Germany?" because I've seen very few takes that weren't one of the two

Ain't nothing wrong with being a sub, it's those that pay to be insulted that are... questionable. And given AOC's sense of self-importance she'd be a findom.

I think a lot of people agree the situation could/should be better, but it's hard when Congress refuses to give funds, and there's so many people to process that we're stuck in this current situation.

"If you want the camps to get better then pass a bill giving them more funding with provisions for very high Congressional oversight over conditions".
