I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

So I guess AOC is hip with the satanist kids these days. :story:

Some religious nutjob, probably: "Satan supports illegal immigration!"

Edgy teenage Democrat nutjobs: "That's exactly right!"

And a year later Hot Topic is monetizing the unholy hell out of it.

Spencer's, more likely. I pass by both regularly at the mall and Hot Topic rarely does overtly political stuff, or if they do they're not flinging it at the customer's face from the storefront. Spencer's on the other hand is the place to go for all your Bernie Bro merch and T-shirts with the latest DNC-sponsored twitter hashtag.

one of them told me "I learn something new almost every day from her Twitter!" which is the cringiest shit I ever heard.

Remember those old school safety pamphlets? The ones that showed you the right way to do something by having some Goofus character with a catchy name like "Donny Donot" do it wrong and get maimed/killed/eaten every time? At would end with "So, kids, remember, stay safe and don't be a Donny Donot" ?

Yeah, same thing.

When are conservatives going to get onboard with this kind of marketing? It's getting clearer and clearer there's a marketplace of disaffected anti-progs who are game. The prog stranglehold on college culture is a house of cards because they are the corporatized, institutional establishment and actually authentic youthful rebellion now really does mean standing up to monetized socjus outrage culture.

Don't do what Donny Don't does.

I find it kinda funny that the left is telling their rebellious fans to destroy insitutions, and then aren't prepared at all when that list of "instiutions' include big, multinational, marketing firms and all the associated consumerist swag...

It's like that WB cartoon gag where the antagonist builds a killer robot and, cackling manically, flips it on and says "Perfect, Now, GO GET EM!" and it turns on HIM and he has to frantically beat it off with a pipe, as he never specified WHO it would kill when he made it and just assumed that the intended enemy was obvious.

Republicans govern, Democrats market. It's been that way for decades... the Democrats can't actually execute policy worth a damn or actually lead the country when they're put in charge of it, but they sure can put on a PR blitz. I think Trump's finally begun to urge some slight change there... MAGA merchandise is a big deal, and he's much better at spinning the spin, since he actually just bothers to try instead of turning the other cheek.

Obviously independent merch people cater to conservatives too... those Kekistani flags come from somewhere. But as for big companies? I don't think we're likely to see many of them overtly catering to the conservative/right wing side any time soon. Specifically because Democrats have shown themselves to be far more willing to use the law as a bludgeon to attempt to eradicate any company that they see as opposing them. Look how hard Democrat politicians have openly tried to destroy Chick-Fil-A merely because it's perceived as a conservative-friendly company and therefore an enemy. If Hot Topic started marketing to said disaffected anti-progs I can guarantee you within the month that at least three Dem mayors would have called for them to be banned from their cities.

Call me late idgaf but it's the bright red lipstick she insists on wearing despite the fact that it doesn't match her skin at all
I don't know why guys get horned up about bright red lips and nails. It's a close second to black for being off-putting

Oh I don't know. I've always thought that red lipstick looks good no matter what your skin tone is. But the sad thing is that apparently she had to be told to wear it

Makeup companies thrive on convincing women that, instead of using their products to subtly increase their sex appeal, it's better to slather it on until you look like a circus prostitute

If it works with her skin, then it doesn't work with her face type. By highlighting her lip shape and size, it makes her teeth look huge and her face shorter and fatter. Either way, it's seriously garish.

I'll leave the fashion criticism to the experts ;)

I just want to remind everyone that in addition to looking like a clown, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a thief and a moron.

Difference is when a "progressive" wears their shit people just laugh at them, when someone wears something "anti-progressive" they get milkshaked with cement. Hell I got a Coke poured over me on the train home from work a couple of years back because I was reading Atlas Shrugged as if consumption equaled total agreement.

Speaker Pelosi rips progressives in ‘The Squad’ for not having ‘any following’ in Congress – Raw Story

www.rawstory.com

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) ridiculed four young female progressives who stood up to her on the recent border wall vote.

Pelosi was interviewed by Maureen Dowd for a story published Saturday by The New York Times.

“Some House liberals have been furious with the speaker since she capitulated to Republicans and Democratic moderates and agreed to pass a bill to send more funding to the border, giving up demands for stronger protections for the migrant children ensnared in the nightmare of shelters there,” Dowd reported.

“I asked Pelosi whether, after being the subject of so many you-go-girl memes for literally clapping back at Trump, it was jarring to get a bad headline like the one in HuffPost that day — ‘What The Hell Is Nancy Pelosi Doing?‘ The article described the outrage of the Squad, as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts are known,” Dowd wrote.

“All these people have their public whatever and their Twitter world,” she said. “But they didn’t have any following. They’re four people and that’s how many votes they got,” Pelosi replied.

She used to be cool but she can't sit with Nancy anymore
