I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

I actually feel bad for Pelosi because she has to deal with these 4 hooligans all day.

I don't. These morons got their start thanks to the dems backing. The DNC wanted to reach and advertise people like this, and now they're feeling exactly how fucking stupid they are.

Unpopular opinion, perhaps, but here it goes.

I don't think the potential fall of AOC is entirely her fault. As mentioned several times, she is new blood in the politics game and young as well. She catered to the young demographic of having them vote her into Congress. In a way, it's amazing that somebody in her situation has entered into Congress.

However, the old guard in the DNC such as Pelosi is setting her up to fail and be a laughingstock. They've been in this game longer than AOC; therefore they're letting her out in the wild with her naivety and world perspective that doesn't necessarily connect with the reality they created. Using her for publicity, while sitting back while she gets devoured by veterans in that game.

I would love to see the old guard from both parties ousted eventually, but judging by the reaction AOC is getting, moderates may likely stick to the old guard or the popular idiot. So we lose anyway. Thanks boomers.

:story:

That look on her face at the end, as if it just dawned on her,
"Wait, 'illegals' are actually really here illegally, that's not just a term mean people on twitter made up?"

While I'm all for ousting the old guard, I want smarter people to replace them. People like AOC are just as fucking stupid as the old guard, and more blatant in their desire to have power and control.

On the topic of family separation I really liked "[it's] the same as if any US citizen is arrested with a child" and the long pause that followed. It's optimistic but at some point AOC should be able to realize that they're not doing it just to be mean.

AOC is about as genuine as astroturf. She interned for Ted Kennedy and literally auditioned with the Justice Democrats for her position primary-ing a completely safe blue seat in Congress. Her and the other 3 are completely controlled opposition who exist only to screech about open border migration and bigotry and shift the overton window a little further towards coastal elite interests while claiming to represent the poor and downtrodden.

The old guard needs to be ousted, no doubt, but these 4 idiots aren't the way forward by any stretch.

Almost forgot to mention, the average person will look at AOC as a poster child of why young blood shouldn't be involved in politics. So then the cycle continues...

This goes along with my point above,

She really does carry herself like a spoiled white kid, which is more or less what she is. It's also pretty obvious she has been coached by her puppeteer chief of staff on what point to make, and can't adjust when faced with a competent person that will refute the point.

There's also an eerie parallel to the McIntosh/Sarkeesian partnership going on here. Cortez even kind of looks like Sarkeesian.

I wonder if Saikat Chakribati is enjoying the congressional seat he bought. He seems to be having a grand old time sewing discord on Twitter and calling everyone a racist. I get the feeling the Dems will go HARD against anyone he's associated with next election. That dude is making enemies at light speed.

Enjoy this while it lasts, AOC is on her way out. Everything she and her clique are doing is quintessentially what you're not suppose to be do in the snake pit known as the United States Congress. Politics, real fucking politics, is a cut throat business and AOC is not cut throat. Not in the slightest. There's blood in the water and the sharks are getting hungry.

“What a weak argument, because you can’t get your way and because you’re getting pushback you resort to using the race card? Unbelievable. That’s unbelievable to me,” Clay reportedly said on Thursday.
The lack of self awareness in the Democrat party might be its greatest weakness.
Ocasio-Cortez personifies that, but don't let it just slide under notice that a guy from the Black Caucus just said that.

AOC really had no response in that video. She went in with "asylum seekers are all good, it's not illegal to request asylum", he pointed out that child separation only happens when they're caught illegally entering, a crime, the same happens to citizens, and this problem would be solved by simply entering at ports of entry. AOC, if you want to make the autistic argument that the ports of entry are too slow and also inhumane, sure, but don't try to argue the actual on the books law with someone who knows it.

She treats these hearings as gotcha moments, rather than someone reasonably explaining why they take the actions that they take. You can tell that by the way she says "seeking asylum is legal." She says it in such an over the top serious way so that people on twitter can yaaaas kweeeen her.
