I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

Alright, what the fuck lady. She sent a request to Israeli Interior Minister Ayreh Deri asking to be able to visit to her family in the West Bank, and then once it was approved she hopped onto Twitter to harp about how she's not going to visit them so it looks to all of her buddies like she's sticking it to the Jews when in reality she's heading over there anyways.

I'm happy to see that you're going to not be a petty idiot who lets politics get in the way of seeing your grandmother before she's gone, but did you have to do that in the pettiest way possible?

Why would she write this on official Congress stationery if it's for a private family visit? Not sure if it's a weird flex or attempted abuse of power or what.

seriously, i am sorry but these are arabs with no states. they should just move to jordan and get the fuck out of israel. they don't deserve shit. they are losers.

I'm not an expert on the geopolitical issues with Isreal and Palestine, but my understanding is that Jordan and the larger arab states don't fucking want these guys either.

They are like Gypsies. Actually all Arabs are like Gypsies.

John McCain - people were excited when he died of cancer and danced on his grave after he died.

Going to have to disagree to an extent. Were some people happy he croaked? Yes certainly if we were to use this forum as a sample, that was so, and yet the Senator'a body was allowed to lie in state in the Capital Rotunda. An honor rarely offered to public officials. As far as I'm concerned, he was mainly savaged by the likes of online contrarians, hardcore Trump supporters, conservatives and republicans that hated McCain's BS "maverick" behavior, Trump himself, and so forth.

Meanwhile Sumner was near beaten to death by a House Representative no less whose action were cheered by Southerners at the time and Hamilton was killed in a duel (granted he should have walked away) and was pretty much mourned by no one.

Jordanians hate Palestinians a little less than other Arabs do. As an example, they gave Palestinians Jordanian citizenship while Jordan occupied the West Bank. Egypt kept them in a stateless situation for almost 20 years. Neither delivered the independent country the Palestinians had been promised by the UN. But most Arabs really hate Palestinians and only see use for them as something to beat Israel over the head with.

The Jordanians let the Palestinians in after the 6 day war, gave them citizenship, and the Palestinians repaid them by trying to assassinate their king and stage a coup.

US Muslim politicians are so bad that they're forcing the white supremacists to come out of the woodwork to defend Israel.

This fight between the Muslim and Jewish Lobby is like the Terf v Trans fight, at the end of the day we can only hope both sides lose.

I wonder if she knew that the letter she sent was going to be made public.

DETROIT – Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (MI-13) released the following statement regarding travel to Israel and Palestine:

"In my attempt to visit Palestine, I’ve experienced the same racist treatment that many Palestinian-Americans endure when encountering the Israeli government. In preparation for my visit, my grandmother was deciding which fig tree we would pick from together, while Palestinians and Israelis who are against the illegal military occupation were looking forward to Members of Congress finally listening to and seeing them for the first time. The Israeli government used my love and desire to see my grandmother to silence me and made my ability to do so contingent upon my signing a letter – reflecting just how undemocratic and afraid they are of the truth my trip would reveal about what is happening in the State of Israel and to Palestinians living under occupation with United States support.

“I have therefore decided to not travel to Palestine and Israel at this time. Visiting my grandmother under these oppressive conditions meant to humiliate me would break my grandmother's heart. Silencing me with treatment to make me feel less-than is not what she wants for me – it would kill a piece of me that always stands up against racism and injustice.

“When I won the election to become a United States Congresswoman, many Palestinians, especially my grandmother, felt a sense of hope, a hope that they would finally have a voice. I cannot allow the Israeli government to take that away from them or to use my deep desire to see my grandmother, potentially for the last time, as a political bargaining chip. My family and I have cried together throughout this ordeal; they’ve promised to keep my grandmother alive until I can one day reunite with her. It is with their strength and heart that I reiterate I am a duly elected United States Congresswoman and I will not allow the Israeli government to humiliate me and my family or take away our right to speak out. I will not allow the Israeli government to take away our hope.

“Racism and the politics of hate is thriving in Israel and the American people should fear what this will mean for the relationship between our two nations. If you truly believe in democracy, then the close alignment of Netanyahu with Trump's hate agenda must prompt a re-evaluation of our unwavering support for the State of Israel. The denial of entry of a congressional delegation is not only about Congresswoman Omar and I, but also about the deep-rooted racism within Israel that is taking us further away from peace. The Israeli and Palestinian people need us to be more courageous and to be honest brokers of peace. Being silent and not condemning the human rights violations of the Israeli government is a disservice to all who live there, including my incredibly strong and loving grandmother.

“This type of oppression is painful for all humanity, but it is especially painful for me personally every time I hear my loving family members cry out for the freedom to live and the right to feel human."

Oh my God why do you
keep digging. I honestly don't think that she expected them to let her in. This whole thing was just a fucking ploy from square one and now she's going to let her Jew-hate get in the way of seeing her 90 year-old grandmother before she dies, and I would bet a solid goddamned dollar that she'll spin around when it happens and blame the Jews for not letting her in to see her after she dies.

She had every ability to go with the delegation last week to see her grandmother but instead she wanted to head to Palestine and meet with all of these anti-Israel groups and in the end she chose to put her politics before her family. That's utterly pathetic and it speaks volumes about the sort of all-encompassing pathology that anti-Semitism inflicts on people. Nothing else matters to them except sticking it to the Jews, and then people spin around and wonder why the Jews are always so fucking paranoid.

To be fair, if there's one thing Trump hating white nationalists and Muslims both can unite over, it's their hatred of Jews.

Part of me is hoping that her grandmother is some fictional character she made for this hoax. There has to be a line even these people won't cross.
