I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

What world does this idiot live in? The Republicans know full well that Trump will have a better time during re-election than Pence, come the fuck on.
Oops, that was supposed to go in the TDS thread.

But yeah, this guy is so out of touch. And to think he teaches PoliSci. No wonder colleges are turning out idiots: there are bigger idiots teaching them. It's the blind leading the blind.

They assume that the voters like Trump because of the Republican Congress critters, when in fact it's the other way around.

They can't do a thing about Trump because there's not enough Never Trumpers in the base to keep them from being primaried. And all the challenger would have to do is rile up Trump's base.

I'm a god damn moron. How is it that a jagoff like me see's it but they can't?

As stupid and establishment as the Republicans can be, I doubt they want to commit political suicide by doing so.

This is very true. And it seems to be a trend no matter the subject (minus STEM). I have a friend who took a course in UK Banking Law. His professor insisted that a cheque is discharged when a person signs it. He asked her that if he signed a cheque, and then kept it in his desk drawer, according to her, it is discharged?

She said yes...

So guys, next time you are in Britbongistan and you need to pay someone with a cheque, just write one and don't give it to them, then when they ask you where it is, say the debt is discharged and see what happens.

I dunno, does anyone else have brain cancer so he can stab the voters in the back like McCain did with Obamacare and die before any consequences can be had?

Edit : Clarifying what I meant.

The judge in a lawsuit over AOC blocking an ex-politician is named Frederic Block; what kind of amateurish writing is this?

Will Block's decision get appealed to Judge Jack Dorsey?
I know right? The headline should be "Sandy vag has to appear in the court of cleansing"

I still think that court ruling about politicians not being allowed to block anyone on a social media platform is really curious. According to the courts, the logic is essentially that the reason that politicians aren't allowed to block anyone is because that access to the messages they send out is something that's inherently necessary. If that's the case, and if the courts believe that unrestricted access to a public forum is the basis for the law, then why is a private company (Twitter) allowed to ban you from that same forum?

You could easily argue that you could "receive" the message just fine through other media outlets or by just... Logging out of your account to bypass the block, but that's not an argument they bothered to make when they wrote the law. It feels like there's a lot of work to be done to hash out the specifics in this law, because as it stands it's sort of nonsensical.

Well if he's got them blocked they can't send "ORANGE MAN BAD!" style messages at him constantly. I almost wonder if they want to assault him with negative messages (assuming he even reads replies, which I doubt sorta) to get in his head and hopefully break him. Kinda like the mob goes after movie stars, game developers, ect. Only problem is on a 1-10 difficulty scale of canceling things a US President is probably around a 25.

What it actually comes down to is that there's quite a few people who acquired/keep a shitload of followers on Twitter (and thus sell themselves/their products) based on their tweets at Trump. People would literally lose money if he could just block them, because their fans wouldn't show up to read their hot-takes.

Can't make money as an "influencer" if you get ratiod to shit whenever you tweet, and for these people that's what happens on non-trump stuff.

In a way I suppose it's like YouTubers who get kicked off the platform and suddenly see an audience retention loss of like 50% or higher when they try to switch services, though I admit that's kind of a bad analogy.

She wants the House to go after impeachment even if it means losing the 2020 election. Considering that this is the same woman who's been actively trying to primary other House Democrats, I'm not even the tiniest bit surprised that she's encouraging all of them to vote in a way that would make them deeply unpopular in most of their districts come 2020.

She's just saying the same thing Pelosi is, amazingly.

Pelosi: Impeachment worth losing House in 2020

I seriously think someone must be aiming a gun at Pelosi off-screen these last few days. She's evil, but she isn't retarded. Usually. She hasn't been acting like herself.

Would be hilarious if this disastrous impeachment push is just an intricate plot to jettison the tard squad.
We'll find out.

If many democrats suddenly decide to retire, then impeachment is a fucking huge mistake, If they're staying around it's so they can watch the retards step on the landmine and the DNC will go off and occupy the vacant space where the Neocons used to live.

There's no way the GOP is going to impeach and put Mike "Electrocute the Fruit" into the Oval Orifice, any more than Trump is going to name Tulsi Gabbard Elizabeth Warren as his running mate in 2020.

Edit - I thought about it, and I could actually see Trump trying to name Tulsi his running mate, to completely fuck over anti-Trump types, but I accept that it's a miniscule possibility; she's legit the least ludicrous DNC candidate, but she's still anti-gun.

See, as someone who leans more towards anarcho- politics, I don't really care if a socialist sweep starts creeping up the Democratic Party. It may lead to an actual situation where third parties form, coalitions have to be made, shit like that. You know, like every other government on the planet. I feel like more would get done for this country, and better, if more groups were sitting at the table.

I dunno, I'm a little hungover so bear with me if I sound kinda out of it.

EDIT: Damn I am so far behind on this thread.
