I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

Not to mention that at no point during this Moonbeam-tier tirade does it explain how we're going to contend with the fact that no other country in the world would ever consider doing something similar because not only is it economically crippling, it would mean that our military would have to switch over to these same, zero-emission policies. We don't exactly have tanks or jet fighters or battleships or missiles that run on solar energy; those would all need to be destroyed and rebuilt into their Flower Child counterparts, which is more than a little ironic if you think about it.

Their most likely solution to this is to dismantle the military altogether and live free and happy as one global family distributing hugs and kisses and flowers equally to everyone.

If by some psychotic miracle we went full GND tomorrow, no one else would follow suite and we're not even close to being the top polluter on the planet. America would be invariably crippled during the transition period and would be left completely exposed to hostile, foreign countries both during and after this process. Given that they make absolutely no effort to address this, they seem to assume that countries like China, Iran, and Russia would just leave us be and cause us absolutely no hassles whatsoever while we turn into a nation-wide hippie commune.

This is the same party that's considered Russia to be an existential threat for three straight years.

I especially love how the climate crisis folks willingly ignore that Canada and the US have huge forested tracts and substantial running water, which are the primary natural carbon traps.

Short version: Any environmentalist legislation that doesn't include nuclear power and doesn't rein in China and India, is at best useless, at worst destructive to modern society, with a wide range of "harmful" in between.

Ok that part is stupid.

Personally I think the solar subsidies were doing pretty well in getting people to switch to that stuff. I only really see this stuff happening with heavy taxes on heavy polluters. The bulldozing part is stupid as fuck too. Get stricter on new buildings sure, but there's the obvious issues with historical buildings and whatnot.

However, if they do a death penalty for illegal dumping I'll turn into a pinko right this second.
I’m gonna tell you a little secret. I used to work with the building manager of a LEED Platinum building, which they tore down the perfectly functional old building to construct, going millions of dollars into dept. And you know what? All those fancy sensors actually end up wasting MORE energy because more sensors = more shit breaking = all your fancy systems aren’t functioning like they’re supposed to, and when it breaks it’s harder and more expensive to repair. “Green” buildings are given ratings on their PROJECTED energy savings before they’re even built, and as far as I’m aware from talking to the building manager, they don’t come back and audit you to make sure you’re actually within the projected energy consumption. This isn’t just virtue signaling, it’s literally counter-productive.

Basically, green buildings are a scam that only work in a “perfect world” that only exists in leftists’ imaginations.

Reminds me of when I was in... Elementary? school, I think it was. For one of our environmental propaganda lessons, we were told to take a half gallon milk jug, fill it with gravel, and put it in our toilet tanks at home. "It will save you a half gallon of water every time you flush!"

Yeah, sure. Except the toilet was designed to flush with a certain amount of water, and now it doesn't have that much. Which means half the time you flush you have to flush twice, or god help you more, to empty the bowl of waste. So in the end you actually (a) end up using more water and (b) pissing off your parents who went along with it for about a week before throwing the damned thing out.

Why settle for a run-down? The FAQ is only 6 pages long and the GND is such an insane piece of IDPOL-Hippie fan-fiction that someone else's summary couldn't possible make it look any crazier than it already is.

I'll give you a run down:

The Green New Deal was developed by Children with no understanding of the world, who eat lead paint for a hobby and if enacted would be promptly removed from office or killed by the American People, Big Business, Their Party and possibly all 3 at once.

I love how living in a college environment where their every demand is taken seriously has trained them to basically think they can demand the earth stop rotating so they can sleep in every morning. This is what happens when you raise a clade of spoiled children to believe the word "no" is emotional abuse.

U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib told Detroit police Chief James Craig he should employ only black people on the department’s facial recognition team because “non-African Americans think African Americans all look the same.”

The Detroit Democrat made the statement during a tour of the Real Time Crime center, where monitors display live footage from video cameras on traffic lights and in and around businesses.

A day after Tlaib made the comment Monday, her spokesman said she was trying to convey the importance of accurately identifying black suspects in a city with an African American population of about 80%.

Police officials invited Tlaib to the facility inside Public Safety Headquarters to see how Detroit uses facial recognition software, after she criticized the technology in an Aug. 20 tweet. The congresswoman wrote: "@detroitpolice You should probably rethink this whole facial recognition bull----."

The tour, which lasted more than an hour, was often tense, with Tlaib and Craig wrangling over how the department uses the software, privacy issues, and concerns that the technology misidentifies a disproportionate number of darker-skinned people. A major point of contention: whether only black civilians should work in the crime center analyzing photos flagged by the software.

“Analysts need to be African Americans, not people that are not,” Tlaib told Craig. “I think non-African Americans think African Americans all look the same.

“I’ve seen it even on the House floor: People calling Elijah Cummings 'John Lewis,' and John Lewis 'Elijah Cummings,' and they’re totally different people,” Tlaib said, referring to the two longtime Democratic congressmen. “I see it all the time, and I love them because they go along with it.”

Craig replied: “I trust people who are trained, regardless of race; regardless of gender. It’s about the training.”

“I know,” Tlaib answered. “But it does make a huge difference with the analysts."

After the tour, when a reporter asked whether she meant white people weren't qualified to work in the crime center, Tlaib said: “No, I think there has actually been studies out that it’s hard for — African Americans would identify African Americans, or Latinos, same thing.”

Tlaib then was asked whether that means non-whites should be barred from working as crime analysts in mostly white communities. She replied: “Look it up.”

On Tuesday, Tlaib’s spokesman Denzel McCampbell provided a link to a study by Memorial University of Newfoundland psychology professors that suggested people using facial recognition technology more accurately identify members of their own race.

"The studies (Tlaib mentioned are) related to cross-race effect or other-race effect," McCampbell said in an email. "This has shown that individuals are less accurate when identifying people from a race other than their own.

"Detroit has a black population of more than 80%, so that is where her basis came from and what she was trying to convey when it comes to accurate identification," McCampbell said.

Researchers have studied the "cross-race effect" for years.

In a 2008 report about eyewitness testimony, researchers Sheree Josephson of Weber State University and Michael E. Holmes of Ball State University studied 40 people of different racial backgrounds who watched video of a crime in progress. In the next 24 hours, they were asked to pick the suspect out of a photo lineup.

Most of the participants misidentified the suspect, or said they didn’t see him in the lineup. Correct identifications happened more often when the suspect and witness shared the same race, the study found.

Craig said several members of his staff, black and white, told him after Monday's meeting they were outraged by Tlaib’s remarks.

“It’s insulting,” Craig said. “We have a diverse group of crime analysts, and what she said — that non-whites should not work in that capacity because they think all black people look alike — is a slap in the face to all the men and women in the crime center.”

Craig said all officers and civilian employees go through mandatory implicit bias training.

“That’s something we train for, and it’s valuable training, but to say people should be barred from working somewhere because of their skin color? That’s racist.”

The Detroit City Council in July 2017 unanimously approved $1 million to purchase the facial recognition software from DataWorks Plus of Greenville, South Carolina. The contract to provide the software and support expires next year.

The Detroit Board of Police Commissioners approved a policy governing the software Sept. 19 after months of contentious debate, with critics arguing that the technology can misidentify people with darker skin.

During Monday's tour of the crime center, Tlaib repeatedly expressed concern that the technology flags an inordinate number of darker-skinned people and raised privacy fears, saying she was "taken aback" during recent congressional meetings on the subject.

"Even my Republican colleagues were very concerned about facial recognition, because all this information in databases offers no protections for our residents," she said.

"We don’t disagree with the concerns," Craig said. "If you'd be patient with me and let me go through this.”

Craig showed a photo of an African American woman whose mugshot was mistakenly flagged after a photo of a black male shooting suspect was fed into the computer.

The chief started to explain the next steps in the process, but Tlaib cut in: “We know it’s close to a 60% error rate because it doesn’t identify black people; you know that, Chief. Chief, the error rate among African Americans, especially women, 60%."

"I understand the technology," Craig said. "That's why I’m taking you through it personally."

"I know," Tlaib said. "Just see if you can get some of our money back before we fix it."

“No,” Craig replied.

Tlaib then asked whether a facial identification hit is ever the sole evidence used to bring charges against someone, and Craig told her no.

“A match is a tool only,” Craig said.

Craig went on to tell Tlaib that after the software misidentified the woman, crime analysis supervisor Andrew Rutebuka saw it wasn’t a match and moved on to other photos.

Rutebuka then put an old police mugshot on the screen, which he said did match the suspect, 21-year-old Davevion Dawson, who is awaiting trial on felonious assault and weapons charges.

“That’s him,” Rutebuka said.

Tlaib fired back: “How do you know? You can’t say it’s him; it’s allegedly him. That’s the lawyer talk in me. It’s his life we’re talking about.”

"Let me stop you right there," Craig interjected. "It's his life, but guess who else’s life? The victim’s. We never talk about the victims. What about that victim's rights? What about the family of the victim? What about their justice?"

"Do you guys have witnesses as well?" Tlaib asked.

"Yes," Craig said.

"The warrant wasn't issued solely based on this, was it?" Tlaib asked.

Craig sighed. "No, it wasn’t," he said. "Work with me. Work with me."

After the presentation, Tlaib was asked if any of her concerns were allayed. "No, I mean … we’ve got to make sure that it’s not expanded … on public housing … these are where people live, and it would be very dehumanizing to have surveillance at your own … home," she said.

Tlaib, who is the target of a House Ethics Committee probe announced Monday into her handling of campaign finances, in July joined Democratic U.S. Reps. Yvette D. Clarke and Ayanna Pressley in filing the “No Biometric Barriers Housing Act of 2019,” which would prohibit the usage of facial recognition technology in most federally funded public housing.

After Monday's tour, police board member Annie Holt, who was among those present, said she thought the presentation would change Tlaib's mind.

"I really appreciate the energy and the commitment of Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, and I'm expecting that the impression she received today will help her revisit some of the notions she previously had about the technology," Holt said.

When asked whether she agreed with Tlaib's comments about whether only black people should work as crime analysts in Detroit, Holt said: "I'm not going to speak to that. I didn't hear it, and it serves no purpose in terms of what we're trying to accomplish as a city and as a nation."

Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw said there are many misconceptions about facial recognition software, and said people mistakenly think it misidentifies people based on skin color.

"The software doesn’t work on gender or race; it works on facial measurements," Shaw said. "If you have a good photo, the photo array will come back with people with the same facial makeup, whether they're male, female, black, white or whatever. It's all about things like the spacing between the eyes, or where the ears are on the side of your head.

"That's where the human element comes in," said Shaw, whose agency has used facial recognition technology for more than 17 years. "If you know you're looking for a white male, and the system kicks out a white female, or a black male, or whatever, then a technician will flag that. Nobody uses the software on its own."

Shaw said state police train constantly to guard against bias.

"There's implicit bias in everything we do," he said. "You just heard it in (Tlaib's) comments."

It's amazing how you're able to just walk into a police station and insist that the Police Chief fire people from their stations purely because of the colour of their skin, and nothing bad will happen to you so long as you're not white and you've got a (D) next to your name. You know the only reason that she didn't absolutely drag this Chief is because he was black, too. After the kinds of exchanges they had during this tour there'd be no way in Hell he wouldn't have been branded a racist a thousand times over if he was white.

Also the reason that people get Cummings and Lewis mixed up all the time is because they look freakishly similar.

She went there with no intention of learning anything about the technology or how it fits into modern policing. Why bother with someone you have no chance of convincing. How much of the police's time did this idiot waste for nothing more than a reeing?

The blowback from refusing to do a dog and pony show for a politician would be far greater than whatever grandstanding she can do. Plus since she's a public figure and her grandstanding will be covered by the media, it's just as likely to turn more people against her as it might help her reputation.

You're absolutely correct. She went in there with the express purpose of producing this soundbite.

Why? I don't know. The only people who are going to be impressed by this stupid shit don't even bother to vote.

lol point me to a puerto rican who isn't a complete worthless waste of oxygen in anything but baseball. Even then they shouldn't be here. Buncha plantain eating island niggers. AOC isn't the worst of them.

Something that I've found when photographing black people is that the camera often doesn't pick up their features very well. Backlighting affects them way more than for whites or other races. Backlighting that would cause no issues for a white subject makes the black subject almost look like a shadow. Granted, I'm hardly a professional photographer, but the surveillance cameras used for facial recognition are surely worse than my amateurish photography.

But, of course, the problems with car AI not seeing black people in the dark and facial recognition cameras not picking up their facial features is due to racism and not biology/physics.

That said, I did rather enjoy the article. It was so painfully clear how frustrated and annoyed the police chief was.

When you become so politically correct, you see racial stereotypes as a good thing.

Also I wonder why she’s not advocating for Asians to have those jobs. They get the whole “they all look alike” treatment worse than black people.

That’s pretty racist of her.
