I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

A spicy new hot take from AOCView attachment 957975
I think what she is trying to convey is that one person shouldn't have a huge lump sum of money when a) there is poverty b) when the CEO makes more than their workers and c) you're not like Bill Gates.

Devil's advocate: if the government dictates how much money you have, people will try harder to cut corners to keep their money. Money laundering, offshore accounts, cheap labor, et al. Or they'll take their money and go elsewhere. It didn't work out well for Greece.

All this talk of Bill Gates being one of the good billionaires proves to me the old Gilded Age trick of spending your fortune on philanthropy late in life (to absolve you of your professional history as a conniving scumbag), is still going strong. I look forward to everyone singing Jeff Bezos' praises in 20 years or so when he's grabbing headlines for personally hand-feeding a condor or whatever.

That's some commie shit.

That's some well thought out shit, but I'd keep it even simpler and say that on principle the government shouldn't have that power, because they'll abuse it elsewhere.

"I was concerned a woman was having a crisis." What, you mean the woman who started screaming about eating babies to save the climate?

Private ownership of precious metals should be illegal too- put it all in the bank. We need to make sure you don't have more than you're allotted.

You say this, but from the 30s until 1975 private ownership of most gold was illegal in the US. I'll also note that this started with a Roosevelt Executive Order. People were arrested for having a dozen gold coins as heirlooms.

Her batshit insane fans are advocating for child cannibalism. I only thought this view was only held by three or two people, but apparently not. I'm now convinced that progressives are completely insane and should be shoved into a trash compactor.

I remember the alt right in 2015-2016 said that the endgame for leftist degeneracy was cannibalism. At the time I thought it was BS but it’s 2019 and here we are: advocating eating bugs and children.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez held a town hall in Corona, New York, at the Queens Public Library on Thursday, which concluded with an alleged constituent in distress yelling, "Eat the babies!"

Like most town halls, Ocasio-Cortez reiterated her goals as the representative for New York's 14th congressional district, alongside messaging about the Green New Deal, her new "Just Society" legislation and the impeachment of President Trump.

Towards the end of the town hall question-and-answer session, the alleged constituent stood up and spoke with fervor about the state of our world and climate change.

"We're not going to be here for much longer because of the climate crisis! We only have a few months left! I love that you support the Green Deal but getting rid of fossil fuel is not going to solve the problem fast enough."

"I think your next campaign slogan has to be this, we got to start eating babies."

At that point, the woman removed her coat and pointed to her t-shirt, which said "Save the Planet, Eat the Children". The t-shirt appeared to be homemade.

Ocasio-Cortez posted a couple of tweets in response to this incident, saying the person in question might have been suffering from a "mental condition".

This person may have been suffering from a mental condition and it’s not okay that the right-wing is mocking her and potentially make her condition or crisis worse. Be a decent human being and knock it off.

AOC responds with a plea for compassion.
Twitter, of course, had a lot to say about this outburst.

I don’t know who needs to hear this right now, but do not, I repeat, do not eat the babies.
— Carol Roth (@caroljsroth) October 4, 2019

Wondering what’s going through the person’s head who had to print a T Shirt with “Eat the Babies†on it. On one hand it sounds metal AF. On the other the font was in all rainbow lettering.
— Stephen Miller (@redsteeze) October 4, 2019

I think @AOC handled this just fine. The woman pictured is clearly deeply, deeply ill -- jumping down her throat wouldn't have helped anything.

AOC has zero obligation to verbally condemn baby-eating. C'mon guys. We all know she does not support that. https://t.co/7Qzer0Lpgk

— Brad Polumbo (@brad_polumbo) October 4, 2019

I had a bad feeling this whole keto thing was going to get way out of hand. #EatTheBabies
— Chris Eppolito (@ohjersy) October 4, 2019

Seems like a normal AOC supporter to me. https://t.co/NWVMRD0wsl
— Donald Trump Jr. (@DonaldJTrumpJr) October 4, 2019
President Donald Trump and his son, Donald Trump, Jr. weighed in on the incident, with the President calling Ocasio-Cortez a "Wack Job!"

Better than being a criminal who betrays our country. https://t.co/UnShA6gcQQ
— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) October 4, 2019
AOC responds to the President's online insult.
Many opponents of Ocasio-Cortez used this peculiar event to push the idea that the U.S. Representative and her constituents condone the eating of babies as an actual solution to climate change. Others believed the woman in distress was planted by the GOP.

Can someone explain to my why one crazy lady yelling "eat the babies" is enough justification for Republicans to deny years of factual climate science? Yes, she's taking Swift's Modest Proposal too far (may have been a plant even)...
— The Tesla-inator (@teslainator) October 4, 2019

If she actually beleived what she was saying, she wouldnt have covered up the shirt till then. It's completely a plant by the GOP
— Fastr (@fastr7) October 4, 2019
"By 2024 a conservative candidate will be able to legit use 'Don't Eat The Babies' as a campaign slogan," tweeted @lerias1968.

"I mean...[Ocasio-Cortez]'s right...woman is either totally insane or a troll...I'm a Trump guy but this crazy eat the babies lady doesn't mean anything" @stringer_jarrod tweeted in a conservative-leaning Twitter thread.

Is this your average AOC constituent?

Vid of the incident:

I for one would love to see some people duke it out arguing over the political implications of eating babies.

"glarglbrgl look im retarded" - retard at some dem event
"lmao what a retard" - drumpf jr on twatter
"dont call xir a r*tard you ableist bigot" - flustered dems on twatter

"I was concerned a woman was having a crisis." What, you mean the woman who started screaming about eating babies to save the climate?
@Null next time kiwi farms is accused of being a nazi board or whatever, just tweet that you were addressing a woman in crisis. Seems to work for AOC.

Isn't it just pathetic how the left can say "woman in crisis" as a signal because they've all accepted the mantra that women are weak and need to constantly be rescued? They all want to live in 1953 but get mad when the rest of us call them out on it.

I wish I was a billionaire so I could pay Tommy Wisseau to quote that woman screaming about eating babies.

>We're not going to be here for much long because of climate change
>I think your next campaign slogan should be "we need to eat the babies!"
>Even if we bomb Russia, we still have too many people!
>We still have too much pollution so we need to get rid of the babies!
